When did travel become important to you?

My real “epiphany” came when I was about 46 and took a trip to Ireland. I was in good shape but the climb up the hill to kiss the Blarney Stone was demanding and I realized I better start traveling now while I can still enjoy it. My original intent with traveling was to experience new and different things. Only later did I realize what an educational experience travel is—learning about people and the world.

What brought you to Women Traveling Together?

After I divorced and my kids were out of college, I finally had the time and space to travel but no one to travel with. In looking at the WTT itineraries, all the activities sounded fun and were things I wanted to do.

Were you anxious prior to taking your WTT first trip?

I never really worried about anything except for the very first tour meeting at the airport—flying into a foreign country not knowing a single soul. After I landed and saw the WTT sign and then met a few women in the airport, I felt safe. Reflecting back…it was so empowering. Safety and a sense of accomplishment are what I recollect most.

Did you find any specific advantages to traveling with just women?

Absolutely! It is much easier to make initial contact and it is much more comfortable to sit at the first meal and converse with other women. It’s hard to articulate, but there is a different dynamic in first meeting a male than a female. There is more give and take with women, which makes for easy collaboration. Women—whether they know one another or not—tend to look after each other.

Your group started as strangers. How did you become friends?

I breathed a sigh of relief when I was met at the airport. After introductions, I think everyone felt comfortable. In the van we all chatted, finding common ground in where we were from, whether we had ever traveled with WTT before, etc. The Welcome Reception provides an opportunity to meet everyone upfront.

I’ve always managed to find someone I felt comfortable with and it’s not necessarily my roommate. I have made lasting friendships on WTT trips and even taken short domestic trips with different WTT travelers from all over the country.

Any advice for women who may have a thirst for travel but no one to travel with?

Just do it—take the leap. You will be forever grateful. It will change your life.
