Priceless Memories & New Friendships

By Jennifer Johnson

June 2026

In spare moments, I think about my WTT trips—turning the memories over in my mind like precious stones.

My first WTT trip was kayaking in the Sea of Cortez in Baja, Mexico. After landing in the small town of Loreto, our group met up with local guides and packed enough supplies into two-person sea kayaks for a five-day adventure. Lisa, a young nurse, was my kayak partner and tent mate. Each time we moved camp, Lisa and I would dissolve into giggles as we struggled to take down our tent. Another woman left a lasting impression with her high spirits and absolute joy in our adventure—despite having a demanding job and a terminally ill husband back home.

At night, seeing the Sea of Cortez twinkle with the luminescence of millions of tiny sea creatures that matched the starry sky was a profound moment, but there's no doubt meeting Lisa and the other women on the trip enriched my life as well.

Peru, my next WTT trip, delivered more priceless memories. The country was amazing, from the alien (to me) landscapes to the fascinating mix of Spanish and native cultures. And there's no doubt Machu Picchu was an experience of a lifetime. But again, women on the trip whom I'd ordinarily never meet also gave me priceless memories.

Voices and photos from the road

From Emily, the oldest traveler, who managed to walk up to Machu Picchu's Sun Gate, to the unfailing kindness of one woman helping another who had knee issues, the women on the trip provided invaluable examples of how life should be lived. One priceless memory was an especially crazy cab ride in Cusco with Claire. An awesome amateur photographer, Claire has been a consummate traveler most of her life, and I still follow her adventures as a Facebook friend.

My most recent WTT trip was to Italy—a place I've dreamed of visiting all my life. Venice rocked (literally), Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii were amazing, Rome was awe-inspiring, and Florence became my favorite town. As on most WTT trips, I gravitated toward other women in the group with similar interests—in my case, the museum geeks.

Peggy, one of my museum buddies, is a connoisseur of modern and antique jewelry. Following her in and out of shops on Florence's Bridge of Gold was an experience I'll never forget. We've stayed in touch, and this past summer we met in St. Louis where our adventures continued, visiting the city's museum of art and trying an award-winning Drunken Pig cupcake.

Someone said: "Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer."

From the priceless memories to the life lessons learned from other women on my trips to the new friendships I've made, I couldn't agree more.
