Itinerary
Wednesday, 20 October 2027: Arrive Cairo; Transfer to Hotel
Schedule your arrival into Cairo at your convenience. Because most flights arrive late evening, there are no scheduled activities for today. Group transfers from the airport to our hotel are provided based on flight arrival times. Overnight Cairo - 4 nights
Thursday, 21 October 2027: Citadel; Khan El Khalili Bazaars; National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (B,L)
After breakfast, we'll gather briefly for our Welcome Meeting and then depart for a full-day tour of Cairo. Our first stop is the Citadel of Salah el Din, the nerve center of both the city and country for almost 700 years. Its construction was initiated in 1176 by Saladin and completed by Muhammad Ali. We also stop at Khan El Khalili bazaar. Built in 1382, the bazaar was known as the Turkish bazaar during the Ottoman period, and today it is the center of trade and communion in the city and offers a wide array of antiques, handicrafts of gold, silver and copper as well as numerous old coffee shops and restaurants. After a Welcome Lunch, we head to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, which offers remarkable insights into Egypt's history dating back 5,000 years. We return to the hotel late this afternoon.
Friday, 22 October 2027: Great Pyramids & Sphinx (B,L)
What do you imagine when you think of Egypt? Pyramids of course. This morning takes us to one of the highlights of a tour full of highlights: the Giza Pyramid complex to see the Great Pyramid and the Great Sphinx. There will be time to explore. Be aware that entering the Great Pyramid can be a claustrophobic experience, if you are prone. We'll enjoy lunch together before we return to the hotel where the afternoon is yours to enjoy as you wish. You may wish to simply rest and enjoy downtime the hotel.
Saturday, 23 October 2027: Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM); Free Afternoon & Evening (B,L)
This morning we will explore Cairo's newest museum, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), which showcases the country's rich archaeological heritage. The realization of this museum has been a long time coming. Construction of this mega project began all the way back in 2005 and has overcome numerous challenges over the years, including environmental, financial and political hurdles. Once fully open at the end of 2025, the museum will display more than 50,000 artifacts, including two Khufu solar boats and the full Tutankhamun collection of about 5,400 pieces. This afternoon and evening are free to enjoy as you wish.
Sunday, 24 October 2027: Fly to Luxor; Free Time (B)
After breakfast we transfer to the airport for our short flight to Luxor, home to the Valley of the Kings built upon the 4,000-year-old site of the ancient city of Thebes. It is one of the greatest open-air museums and stands as a time capsule of a long-ago era. We check into our hotel and the evening is yours to relax. Overnight Luxor - 1 night
Monday, 25 October 2027: Dendera Temple; Nile Boat Trip; Temple of Karnak & Temple of Luxor (B,L,D)
Today, we begin in Dendera to visit the Temple of Hathor, a major goddess in the ancient Egyptian pantheon, who personified the principles of love and joy. We then continue making our way up the legendary Nile River and settle in to our floating hotel. After lunch onboard, we visit the Temples of Luxor and Karnak, which is more of a complex of sanctuaries, kiosks, pylons and obelisks, all dedicated to the Theban gods. Dating from 2055 BC to 100 AD the Temple of Karnak is the largest religious building ever constructed. Although the mud-brick houses and palaces of Thebes have disappeared, its stone temples have survived. The most beautiful of these is the Temple of Luxor. Dating from 1392 BC, it has been in near continuous use as a place of worship. Overnight Nile Cruise Boat - 4 nights
Tuesday, 26 October 2027: Sail from Luxor to Edfu; Valley of Kings (B,L,D)
Weather permitting, take to the skies early this morning on an optional hot-air balloon ride (not included in tour price, cash paid on site) to see the sun rise over Luxor, the Valley of the Kings and the Nile River. Later this morning, we head to Luxor’s West Bank to explore the Valley of the Kings, the royal cemetery for 62 pharaohs. Be prepared for a lot of walking this day as we visit several tombs, including the tomb of perhaps Egypt's most famous pharaoh, Tutankamun. After lunch onboard, we sail to Edfu via Esna and the Esna Lock. Spend time on deck to witness the ship negotiate the lock process.
Wednesday, 27 October 2027: Sail to Kom Ombo and Aswan; Temple Visits (B,L,D)
This morning, we visit the Temple of Horus in Edfu with its looming sandstone walls, vast chambers, and colossal gateways, to experience the sheer scale and ambition of Egypt's temple builders. We then sail on to Kom Ombo to see a rather unique double temple dedicated to the crocodile god and the falcon-headed god. After transferring back to the boat for lunch onboard, we continue sailing on to Aswan.
Thursday, 28 October 2027: Temple of Philae; Lord Kitchener's Island (B,L,D)
Today’s itinerary takes us to the Temple of Philae, one of Egypt’s most beautiful temples that was nearly submerged when Aswan Dam was built in the 1960s. Fortunately the temple was saved thanks to a joint project between the Egyptian government and UNESCO. We will also visit Kitchener's Island, which was gifted to Lord Kitchener after he served as Consul-General in Egypt from 1911-1914. With a passion for palms and plants, Kitchener transformed the entirety of the island into a stunning botanic garden. We return to the boat later this afternoon.
Friday, 29 October 2027: Morning Excursion to Abu Simbel; Farewell Lunch; Return Home (B,L)
We are up early today to travel by coach to Abu Simbel, dedicated to the Pharaoh Ramses II of biblical fame. In 1257, Ramses II had twin temples carved out of solid rock. The most remarkable feature of the site is that the temple is precisely oriented so that twice each year the first rays of the morning sun shine down the entire length of the temple-cave to illuminate the innermost shrine. You will be awed by the immensity and the history of this place. After our visit, we will enjoy our Farewell Lunch to recount our adventures this past week. Alas, it's time to say good-bye to this remarkable ancient land. We travel back to Aswan by coach and plan to arrive at the airport by 5pm. Schedule your departure from Aswan no earlier than 8pm.

- All shared rooms have 2 beds
- All shared rooms are non-smoking
- No special requests about your roommate can be accommodated

What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
For This Trip You Will Need—
- Scarf—for covering your hair
- Modest clothing—no shorts, tank tops, or sandals should be worn in public places.
- Sunglasses, sunscreen and hat
- Lightweight cotton shirts and long pants
- Cooling neck scarf you can get wet if you are sensitive to heat
- Reusable water bottle to stay hydrated
- Swimsuit and coverup—the hotels feature lovely pools
- Smart-casual outfit if you'd like to dress up a bit for dinners.
Good Packing Habits—
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping aids, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
- It is best to travel as lightly as possible. Most travelers regret when they have packed too much.
- We strongly recommend you bring only one suitcase no larger than 26 inches high as measured from the FLOOR to the top of the retracted handle, plus 1 carry-on. The small or medium-size in a 3-piece luggage set easily meets this requirement and should be plenty roomy for this length of trip.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings. We expect you to take your belongings from the coach to your room and to bring it back to the coach on days we change hotels. We do not provide luggage pulls; they are not safe and are inconvenient.
- Steps exist at most hotel entrances. On occasion the coach must unload passengers and luggage some distance from the hotel entrance.
- If you carry a purse, it should be able to be worn across your body, hands-free.
- If you are planning on shopping, have larger items shipped directly to your home. For smaller items you want to carry home, bring a small nylon zippered bag packed in your suitcase to accommodate these purchases.
- Keep in mind that you will be traversing airports as part of this itinerary and will need to handle your own luggage through customs. You will need to pay any and all charges you may incur by the airlines from overweight luggage.
What are the health recommendations for this tour?
What are the phone and internet recommendations for this tour?
- Contact your cell phone service provider before departing about adding an international calling plan. Most carriers have flat daily rates which will allow your US-based phone to be functional upon arrival in a foreign country.
- Managing data while traveling internationally is important. Using WiFi when available and communicating through apps like What's App help you manage data usage while traveling.
- Learn how to make an international call BEFORE you leave. Consult your cell provider and check out the website www.HowtoCallAbroad.com.
What are the electricity requirements for this tour?
How much money should I bring on this tour?
Only you can determine the optimum amount of cash to take on tour. When budgeting for out-of-pocket expenses, there are several aspects to consider: the number of meals you are responsible for, the amount of money you like to have on-hand for snacks and drinks, your individual shopping interests and habits, and cash for tipping (see Tipping Section for details).
- The official currency used in Egypt is Egyptian pound.
- Egypt still appears to be very much a cash-based society. Credit cards may not be widely accepted except in tourist-oriented establishments
- Be sure to exchange USD into local local currency so you have cash upon arrival. This can be done at the airport upon arrival into Cairo. Easy access to ATM machines can be problematic elsewhere.
- Small purchases often require local currency.
- Many historic sites charge extra for the privilege of taking photos.
- Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling and provide dates of travel.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
- Tipping transfer drivers, wait-staff, porters, or other individuals who provide a personal service to you at the hotel or at other public locations.
- Tipping aboard the Nile Cruise. Typically, tips are collected at the end of the cruise. Your Tour Leader will coordinate the collection of tips from each room and place in the tip container on the last day. Suggested amount is $10 per person per day.
- Tipping the Egyptian guide that accompanies the group throughout the tour. (Budget $80)
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $9-$12 per day.
