Alaska: Overland Adventure
Denali and the Kenai Peninsula
Come with WTT for a taste of Alaska, both literally and figuratively. We begin in Fairbanks, where given the city's proximity to the Arctic Circle, we can bask in the midnight sun. We then venture south by first class rail. Our destination is the vast and majestic Denali National Park to try and glimpse the elusive 20,000+ foot peak. We'll continue on to Anchorage to take in the sights before spending three days on the beautiful Kenai Peninsula. Words cannot describe the beauty of this area - where mountains meet the sea and the ice. This is Alaska's playground and we'll get out on the water to visit Kenai Fjords National Park and the Kenai River. Make this the year you visit Alaska!

Itinerary
Tuesday, 15 June 2027: Arrive Fairbanks; Welcome Dinner (D)
Schedule your arrival into Fairbanks, Alaska no later than 4:00pm. Upon arrival use local transportation to get to the hotel. The tour begins in the hotel lobby at 6:00pm. We'll enjoy a Welcome Meeting and then have a Welcome Dinner together to get better acquainted. Overnight Fairbanks - 2 nights
Wednesday, 16 June 2027: River Cruise; Fairbanks City Tour (B,L)
We begin our day with a journey back in time as we board a sternwheeler riverboat to cruise along the Chena River. After experiencing the thrill of the river, we share lunch together. This afternoon we'll enjoy a city tour of Fairbanks. We'll explore the Santa Claus House where every day is Christmas and we'll take in the views of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and more. The evening is free to explore as you wish. This is a good night for optional sightseeing flight (not included in cost of tour) over the Arctic Circle if you are interested.
Thursday, 17 June 2027: Train to Denali (B)
All Aboard! This morning we depart on the Denali Star train bound for Denali National Park. The trip takes about 4 hours and we'll travel in luxury via GoldStar Dome Service. These are some of the newest domed cars on the train and they feature large, curved glass windows that allow for excellent 360-degree viewing. The views of the Alaskan wilderness are outstanding and perhaps we'll even glimpse moose, bald eagles and bears. The afternoon is yours to enjoy as you wish. Considering getting oriented at the Visitor Center or perhaps visit the downtown area. Overnight Denali Area - 2 nights
Friday, 18 June 2027: Personal Day in Denali (B)
Make this your day for exploring Denali National Park. Your WTT Tour Director will help pair travelers with similar interests so you have someone to explore with, or you can venture out on your own if you wish. Explore as much or as little of the six million acres comprising Denali National Park as you wish; there is no shortage of things to do. Hopefully the weather will be cooperative and we'll have a chance to glimpse North America's tallest peak and diverse wildlife such as bears, moose and caribou. Consider taking a bus tour into the park, flightseeing over the park, a jeep tour and more. NOTE: If you are interested in park-coordinated activities, reservations must be made months in advance (cost not included and must be paid directly to the supplier). WTT will provide more details shortly after final payment.
Saturday, 19 June 2027: Free Morning in Denali; Train to Anchorage (B,D)
This morning is at leisure to take a short hike, add on another activity, or just sleep late. Your Tour Director will have suggestions for things to do. We’ll gather around noon to connect with the GoldStar Dome Service train service that will take us to Anchorage, an 8-hour trip. There will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy views along the route from the dome cars big windows. Upon arrival, we transfer to the hotel and get settled. Overnight Anchorage - 2 nights
Sunday, 20 June 2027: Anchorage Trolley Tour; Free Time (B,L)
Enjoy a leisurely morning before we hop on a guided tour of Anchorage by trolley to get our bearings. We'll visit the city's highlights including Earthquake Park, Lake Hood Seaplane Base, Kincaid Park and more. After lunch together, the rest of the afternoon is yours to enjoy as you wish. You might want to consider visiting the Anchorage Museum, Alaska's largest, or check out the Alaskan Native Heritage Center for an introduction to the diverse traditions and languages of the native people.
Monday, 21 June 2027: Alyeska Aerial Tram; Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (B,L)
This morning we depart for the Kenai Peninsula, just south of Anchorage, and drive along beautiful Turnagain Arm, a part of Cook Inlet famous for its bore tide. Our first stop is the town of Girdwood where the lovely Alyeska Resort is located. We will take the Alyeska Aerial Tramway, which whisks us up to the top of Mt. Alyeska for breathtaking panoramic views of "hanging" glaciers and endless peaks. From here, we continue along the Seward Highway to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, a nonprofit that takes in orphaned and injured animals from around the state. Our final destination is the port community of Seward, one of Alaska’s oldest and most scenic towns. We anticipate arriving around 5:00pm. This evening is yours to spend as you wish. Overnight Seward - 2 nights
Tuesday, 22 June 2027: Kenai Fjords Cruise (B,L)
Enjoy a leisurely morning before we depart to spend the day on the water in Kenai Fjords National Park watching for whales, eagles and bears and getting close to a tidewater glacier. Nearly 40 glaciers flow from the Harding Icefield, which the national park protects. If we’re lucky, we may see a glacier "calve." It's an incredible sight to see and hear! A deli-style lunch will be served onboard. We return to Seward late this afternoon.
Wednesday, 23 June 2027: Kenai River Float; Return to Anchorage (B,L,D)
This morning we’ll travel by coach to Cooper Landing, a small town that sits at the intersection of the Kenai and Russian rivers. Here we'll enjoy a delicious picnic lunch alongside the river before we climb aboard rafts to view the majestic snow-capped mountain scenery from the vantage point of turquoise waters. Keep your eyes peeled for moose, eagles, beavers and bears. Our raft guide will do all the hard work and will narrate the sights as we float down the river. (This activity is suitable for anyone; no rafting experience is needed.) We then continue on to Anchorage. We recount our adventures of the past week over our Farewell Dinner tonight. Overnight Anchorage - 1 night
Thursday, 24 June 2027: Return Home (B)
Sadly, our Alaskan adventure has come to an end and it’s time to return to the lower 48. Schedule your departure flight at your convenience. Many flights depart Anchorage late evening. If you prefer to fly home the previous evening, you are welcome to do so. The hotel is approximately 15 minutes form the airport.

What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
In general the temperature, rainfall and humidity levels vary based on the time of the year. We suggest you monitor weather apps leading up to the time you depart for the most current information.
For This Trip You Will Need—
- Lightweight but warm jacket/fleece—needed for morning activities.
- Casual clothing that is easily layered. You will be thankful for the ability to add and subtract layers.
You May Also Want—
- Binoculars - for wildlife spotting
- Inexpensive rain poncho or lightweight waterproof exterior layer
- Sun protection & insect repellent
- Swimsuit
Good Packing Habits—
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping aids, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
On every WTT tour, our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicles we use and the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings.
- It is best to travel as lightly as possible. Most travelers regret when they have packed too much.
- You may bring one suitcase plus small shoulder bag/day pack/purse.
- Maximum suitcase size: No larger than 26 inches high as measured from the FLOOR to the top of the retracted handle, plus 1 carry-on.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings. We expect you to take your belongings from the coach to your room and to bring it back to the coach and load it on days we change hotels. We do not provide luggage pulls; they are not safe and are inconvenient. The possibility of steps exist at most hotel entrances.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
- You are responsible for tipping waitstaff, porters, or other individuals who provide a service to you at the hotel, or other public locations.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.
