Itinerary
Tuesday, 13 July 2027: Arrive Arusha, Tanzania
Schedule your arrival into Mount Kilimanjaro International Airport in Arusha, Tanzania, at your convenience. Arusha is the safari capital of Tanzania and is located at the foot of Mt. Meru, near Mount Kilimanjaro and many national parks, and thus makes a great starting point for our adventure. Group transfers from the airport to the hotel are provided based on flight arrival times. As many flights arrive late in the day, there are no scheduled activities for this day. Overnight Arusha - 2 nights
Wednesday, 14 July 2027: Walking Safari in Arusha National Park; Game Drive (B,L,D)
We are up early to begin our day. Be sure to grab some breakfast and meet in the lobby for our Welcome Meeting at 7:30am. Come prepared because after this welcome, we will depart for a full day's excursion. Just to the north on the slopes of Mt. Meru is Arusha National Park, which despite its small size, features giraffe, Cape buffalo, zebra, warthog, the black-and-white colobus monkey, the blue monkey, flamingo, elephant, lion and other African animals. Under the protection of a ranger, we leave the vehicle for an approximate 90-minute walking safari to track and view many of these animals. After a picnic lunch, the game drive continues. Once we arrive back to the hotel, there will be a chance to freshen up before having dinner together.
Thursday, 15 July 2027: Lake Manyara National Park & Ngorongoro Conservation Area (B,L,D)
After checking out of the hotel, we make our way to Lake Manyara National Park, home to an amazing variety of birds and animals. The famous tree-climbing lions, the only kind of their species in the world, make the ancient mahogany and elegant acacias their home during the rainy season and are a well-known but a rather rare feature of this northern park. In addition to the lions, the park is also home to the largest concentration of baboons anywhere in the world. After several hours spent game viewing, we continue to our new lodging near the border of Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Overnight Karatu - 2 nights
Friday, 16 July 2027: Game Drive in the Ngorongoro Crater (B,L,D)
The Ngorongoro Crater is often called "Africa’s Eden" as it is home to more than 30,000 animals, making it one of the most densely populated wildlife areas in the world. We begin early this morning as we depart with our safari vehicle for a half-day game drive to see this amazing spectacle. Within the crater rim, large herds of zebra and wildebeest graze while lions laze in the sun. At dawn, the endangered black rhino returns to the thick cover of the crater forests after grazing on dew-laden grass in the morning mist. Just outside the crater’s ridge, tall Maasai herd their cattle and goats over green pastures through the highland slopes, living alongside the wildlife as they have for centuries.
Saturday, 17 July 2027: Serengeti National Park Game Drives (B,L,D)
Be sure you are rested; today is a long day but well worth it! We begin early again as we depart for Serengeti National park via Olduvai Gorge, the site of archaeological findings where traces of prehistoric people dating back 3.5 million years have been discovered. We anticipate arriving at our Serengeti Lodge in time for a late lunch, after which we set out on an game drive that may last until sunset. Overnight Serengeti - 2 nights
Sunday, 18 July 2027: Serengeti National Park Game Drives (B,L,D)
Serengeti is easily Tanzania’s most famous national park, and its largest. Its far-reaching plains of endless grass, tinged with the twisted shadows of acacia trees, make it the quintessential image of a wild and untarnished Africa. The wildebeest make their seasonal journey to fresh pasture to the north, then back south after the biannual rains. The sound of their thundering hooves, raising massive clouds of thick red dust, has become one of the legends of the Serengeti plains. Today, we enjoy two separate game drives. We are up early for the first game drive to enjoy the best views, then return to the lodge for some downtime and lunch before setting out again on the second game drive this afternoon. OPTIONAL BALLOON RIDE: If you are feeling adventurous, consider the optional balloon ride over the Serengeti early this morning (see Space Reservation form for pricing). This is a very early morning departure but the views are worth the wake up call and we can almost guarantee that this is an experience you'll remember for a lifetime. You will return in time for the morning game drive.
Monday, 19 July 2027: Fly to Zanzibar (B,L,D)
This morning we transfer to the Seronera airstrip for our scheduled flight to Zanzibar via Arusha. Upon arrival, we will make our way to our idyllic beach resort to relax and enjoy the amenities (at own expense) for the rest of the day. Overnight Zanzibar - 3 nights
Tuesday, 20 July 2027: Stone Town Tour; Afternoon at Leisure; Group Dinner (B,D)
Known as the Spice Island, Zanzibar is bursting with culture and history, seemingly at odds with its idyllic geography of white-sand beaches. Our tour of Stone Town begins with a visit to the colorful Darajani Market as well as the historic Anglican Cathedral built in 1874, which stands on the site of a former slave market to symbolize a potent time in Zanzibar’s history. From there, we navigate the historic alleys to view the house of the notorious trader Tippu Tip and the massive stone walls of the 17th-century Old Fort. We also make stops outside the People’s Palace—the former residence of the late Sultan of Zanzibar—and the iconic House of Wonders, a landmark full of intrigue from days long ago. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy as you wish. We will regroup for dinner at our hotel.
Wednesday, 21 July 2027: Day at Leisure @ the Beach Resort; Farewell Dinner (B,D)
We are staying beachfront at a resort situated on the Indian Ocean. It has the finest white sandy beach on the east coast of the island so take advantage of this idyllic locale. The most unique thing about the beaches in Zanzibar is the transformation between low and high tide. At low tide you can walk endlessly out into the horizon with the ocean water gently lapping at your feet. After a dip in the beautiful blue waters, or if you feel you need some pampering after all the safaris, book yourself some spa time. All this makes Zanzibar a wonderful place to relax and unwind, which is what today is all about. There are plenty of activity options for you at the beaches. We will regroup tonight for one last dinner together.
Thursday, 22 July 2027: Return Home from Zanzibar (B)
Sadly, it’s time to return home. Make your return flight home at your convenience. Transfers will be provided based on your departure flight time. The airport is approximately 1 hour from the hotel.

Suggested companies for Emergency Medical/Evacuation Insurance are: Allianz Travel Insurance and World Nomads.
Zanzibar requires tourists to purchase additional emergency medical insuarance directly from the Zanzibar tourism site before being allowed in the country. Cost is $44.

- Select "No, I do not wish to share a room" if you want to have your own room. Additional costs apply.
- All shared rooms have 2 beds
- All shared rooms are non-smoking
- No special requests about your roommate can be accommodated

What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
For This Trip You Will Need
- Shoes appropriate for light hiking (closed-toe shoes with good traction)
- Clothing in earthy, neutral colors on walking safaris. (Flies are often drawn to dark colors)
- Long-sleeved, lightweight shirt(s)
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, brimmed hat
- Remedies for motion sickness if you are prone
- Swimsuit — All hotels have an outdoor pool to enjoy after a hot day.
- Beachwear — For water and beach activities in Zanzibar
- Bandanna or Neck Gaiter — Protects the neck and nose from the sun and dust.
- Binoculars
- Insect repellent
DO NOT BRING
- Plastic bags of any size or sort — It is illegal to bring plastic bags into Tanzania. They will be confiscated by immigration. Plastic Zip-Loc® bags specifically used to contain and carry toiletries on flights ARE permitted as long as you do not dispose of them in Tanzania.
- Clothing made of delicate or expensive fabrics; the dust will likely ruin them.
Good Packing Habits—
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping aids, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
Our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicles we use, the requirement that all travelers manage their belongings, and restrictions imposed by other forms of transportation such as small planes.
- You may bring ONE soft-sided, durable bag. Do not bring hard-sided luggage as it is not allowed in the safari vehicles we will use on some days for transport. Soft-sided bags with wheels (such as a rolling backpack) are permitted. The dimensions should measure no more than (66x42x28 centimeters).
- The internal flight during the course of this tour restricts the number and weight of checked bags to one weighing no more than 15 kgs (~33lbs). If you bring something extra or heavier or larger, you will be charged a fee for excess baggage.
- You are also allowed one carry-on (hand luggage) on this internal flight, which must be a soft-bag only weighing no more than 5 kgs (~11 lbs). Oversized backpacks or trolley bags are NOT allowed as hand luggage. We recommend you bring a small backpack as your carry-on as it will help you easily corral your belongings while on safari.
- You are responsible for managing your belongings. We expect you to take your belongings to and from the transportation vehicle to your room on days we change hotels.
What are the health recommendations for this tour?
The Center for Disease Control advises you should avoid tap water and drink bottled water.
While there are no specific vaccine requirements for Tanzania, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends you be up-to-date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. The CDC provides additional guidance at https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/list. Please discuss any vaccine or health concerns with your healthcare provider.
US Citizens are not required to have a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate. However, if arriving or transiting (more than 12 hrs) from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission, you will be asked to present a Vaccination Certificate.
The possibility of contact with mosquitoes exists in Tanzania, especially during the rainy season. It is good practice to avoid being bitten. You can significantly reduce the chance of being bitten by wearing protective clothing (long sleeves and pants) and using a quality mosquito repellent. Consumer Reports recommends brands containing 20% Picaridin or 25% DEET as the best defense against all types of mosquitoes and biting insects. Avoid natural or herbal based repellents as they do not provide adequate protection from being bitten.
What are the phone and internet recommendations for this tour?
- You should understand what your current cell phone plan includes in terms of data and minutes. Some, like certain T-Mobile plans, include an international package.
- Contact your cell phone service provider before departing about adding an international calling plan. Most carriers have flat daily rates which will allow your US-based phone to be functional upon arrival in a foreign country.
- Managing data while traveling internationally is important. Using WiFi when available and communicating through apps like WhatsApp help you manage data usage while traveling.Learn how to make an international call BEFORE you leave. Consult your cell provider and check out the website www.HowtoCallAbroad.com.
What are the electricity requirements for this tour?
Depending on what you choose to pack, you may need to purchase a universal adapter that supports a wide variety of sockets/plugs. Many countries, such as Tanzania, operate on 220V or 230V, which differs from most of North America. Most of today's electronics (laptops, phone chargers, etc.) are multi-voltage and will work worldwide automatically, without an adapter. You should also check your electronic devices for voltage compatibility or consult your owner's manual for further details.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
Only you can determine the optimum amount of cash to take on tour. When budgeting for out-of-pocket expenses, there are several aspects to consider: the number of meals you are responsible for, the amount of money you like to have on hand for snacks and drinks, your shopping interests and habits, and cash for tipping (US Dollars).
- The official currency used in Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS).
- US Dollars are accepted in most places. Bills must be crisp, un-torn, and printed after 2006 (and must have the current security markings, a large portrait of the appropriate US president), or they may be rejected.
- You may want to bring many smaller denominations of USD, particularly crisp $1 bills for many small purchases, snacks, and tips.
- Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling and provide travel dates.
- Visa and American Express can be used at the hotels.
- Protect your passport, cash, and credit cards with a secure money belt worn under your clothes.
- Zanzibar airports may require you to pay a cash departure tax; we recommend you have USD on hand upon departure.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
All tips to the local guides in Arusha and Zanzibar will be paid on your behalf.
- In general, tipping from tourists in Tanzania is expected when service is provided. Be sure to leave a small tip at restaurants and for taxi drivers.
- We suggest you read up on tipping culture in the various places you will be visiting so you can show your appreciation for any personal service provided with an appropriate gratuity.
- You are responsible for tipping Game Lodge staff and Safari guides. The typical amount suggested is $10 per day for the Game Lodge staff and $15 per day for safari guides.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.
