Itinerary
Friday, 06 August 2027: Arrive Cape Town; Flights Arrive Late Evening
Schedule your arrival into Cape Town, South Africa at your convenience. Group transfers based on flight arrival times are included from the airport to the hotel. As most flights arrive late evening, there are no scheduled activities for this day. Overnight Cape Town - 4 nights
Saturday, 07 August 2027: Bo Kaap Musuem; Cooking Class w/ Lunch; Panoramic City Tour (B,L)
We meet over breakfast this morning for our official Welcome Meeting. Cape Town, the Mother City of Africa, is nestled between Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, creating a dramatic backdrop that is instantly recognizable. It is a rare cultural gem resulting from the amalgamation of French, Dutch, Portuguese, British, German & Indian settlers, as well as a melting pot from many African nations. We set off to explore the Bo-Kaap neighborhood on a walking tour and visit the Bo-Kaap museum, gaining an intimate introduction to the Cape Malay people. The highlight of the morning is a private cooking class in a local home where we enjoy our creations over lunch while hearing personal stories of life in this historic community. We continue with a panoramic tour of Cape Town before returning to the hotel late this afternoon.
Sunday, 08 August 2027: Robben Island; Winery Visit (B,D)
This morning's excursion takes us by boat to Robben Island, where for 27 years South Africa's first democratically elected president Nelson Mandela was held captive for his anti-apartheid activism. We then travel to the world-renowned Cape Wineland's wine region. Dutch settlers planted the first grapes here in the 17th century. The Mediterranean-like climate, cooling influence of the ocean, altitude and terrain make it perfect for growing Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah grape varietals. We visit the grand Groot Constantia Wine Estate for a tour and tasting before heading back to Cape Town. Dinner will be at a local restaurant that includes entertainment. Be ready to feel the heartbeat of Africa!
Monday, 09 August 2027: Cape of Good Hope along Chapman’s Peak Drive; Penguin Colony (B,L)
Chapman's Peak Drive is one of the most spectacular ocean drives in the world. We'll wind along this legendary road, stopping at Hout Bay. Here we cruise to Seal Island (weather dependent). Be sure to dress in layers, as temperatures can be chilly. We continue to the wild and beautiful Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. We board the funicular for a magnificent view over False Bay, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. We return via the historic naval port of Simon’s Town, where there will be time for a lunch stop, and a visit to the African Penguin breeding colony at Boulders Beach.
Tuesday, 10 August 2027: Fly to Kasane, Botswana; Transfer to Lodge (B,D)
We depart Cape Town to fly to Kasane, Botswana via Johannesburg. Be sure to have your passport handy today. Upon arrival, we will clear customs and be transferred on small private boats to our comfortable lodge situated just down the river in the neighboring country of Namibia. There will be time to settle into our rooms and familiarize ourselves with the sounds of the wilderness. Even though we will be searching for wildlife over the next few days, no two days are ever identical. Expect the unexpected, as safaris are filled with unique moments and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Dinner will be served at the lodge tonight. Overnight Cascade Island Lodge - 3 nights
Wednesday, 11 August 2027: Chobe National Park Safari on Land and River (B,L,D)
Get your cameras ready as we embark on a full-day safari in Chobe National Park where we will experience some of Botswana's best wildlife encounters from land safari vehicles specially designed for maximum visibility over the tall grasses. This park is known for its large herds of elephants and buffalo, but we will also have a good chance of spotting leopards in trees and hippos in water. There are more than 50,000 elephants that freely roam in and out of the unfenced park. Lunch will be served at a "floating restaurant" that juts out onto the Chobe River. The river border is the only place in the world where four countries — Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia — come together. This afternoon we take to small private boats to Sedudu Island. There is no question that cruising the region’s rivers amplifies the wildlife experience. We return to the lodge for the night and have dinner together.
Thursday, 12 August 2027: Impalila Island; Zambezi River Boat Tour (B,L,D)
Our morning excursion will take us to the traditional villages on Impalila Island. In the middle of the island, there is a particularly old and large baobab tree that provides a great lookout over the four countries that meet right here. We will learn about the local customs by interacting with the villagers and admiring their arts and crafts. We head back to our lodge for lunch. This afternoon, we hop on a boat tour on the Zambezi River. Stretching over 1,500 miles and flowing through six countries, the river offers spectacular panoramas of unspoiled nature.
Friday, 13 August 2027: Half Day Chobe National Park Land Safari; Afternoon at Leisure (B,L,D)
We return to Botswana's jewel, Chobe National Park, for another exciting 4x4 safari. Enjoy a traditional African lunch in the bush before we head back to the lodge. Take time to relax and enjoy the property before we meet for dinner tonight.
Saturday, 14 August 2027: Boat Safari; Fly over Lake Kariba; Board Cruise (B,L,D)
Enjoy one last water safari in the Chobe National Park area with lunch along the way. We set out for the Kasane Airport mid-day to board small private planes for our flight to Kariba, Zimbabwe. Be sure to look out the windows for stunning views over Lake Kariba, the world's largest man-made lake. We will board the R/V African Dream and settle into our cabins. There will be a brief safety talk and then we have dinner together. Overnight African Dream - 3 nights
Sunday, 15 August 2027: Land Safari in Matusadona National Park (B,L,D)
Our day begins early as we set out for a land safari to discover the area around Matusadona National Park. This park is home to Africa's famed "Big 5" - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Not only are the large animals spectacular, but the bird life will enthrall you too, such as the legendary African Sea Eagle, the majestic Yellow-billed Stork, or the Black Heron with its interesting hunting method. We will return to the African Dream for lunch. There will be time this afternoon to explore the lake by private boat.
Monday, 16 August 2027: Boat & Land Safari around Matusadona National Park (B,L,D)
We board private boats to navigate the intricate inlets and hidden coves of Matusadona National Park, a sanctuary where the water meets the wilderness. Lunch is served on board as we cruise through this biodiverse hotspot. As the afternoon wanes and the "golden hour" sets in, we set out in 4x4 safari vehicles. Under the soft glow of the setting sun, search for lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo. The adventure concludes back on the African Dream, with a magical evening on the sun deck. In the absence of light pollution, the African sky transforms into a velvet carpet of glittering stars and the crystalline Milky Way. Sip a nightcap to the symphony of the bush—the distant roar of a lion or the splash of a hippo—marking the perfect end to a day in the wild.
Tuesday, 17 August 2027: Sail Lake Kariba (B,L,D)
This morning, we sail across the vast expanse of Lake Kariba, navigating a surreal landscape where the ghostly silhouettes of sun-bleached trees rise from the depths. After a relaxing lunch on deck, our guide will recount the fascinating history of the lake, people living nearby and the fragile ecosystem that thrives here today. As the heat of the day fades, we set out on a private boat to witness a legendary Kariba sunset. Watch as the sky transforms into a kaleidoscope of brilliant pinks and deep violets, reflecting off the glass-like water.
Wednesday, 18 August 2027: Lake Kariba Dam; Fly to Victoria Falls; Walking Tour of the Falls; Farewell Dinner (B,D)
At sunrise, we set sail toward the town of Kariba to disembark and continue on to the airport. Along the way, we will stop at the gigantic Kariba Dam, built in 1955 along the Zambezi River, responsible for the formation of the lake. Today, the dam serves as a source of electric power for 70% of Zimbabwe. From here, it's just a short flight to nearby Victoria Falls aboard a small private plane. Upon arrival, enjoy a walking tour to the falls. Victoria Falls is the largest single sheet of falling water on Earth. The force of the water, estimated at around 145 million gallons-per-minute during the rainy season, sends clouds of spray approx. 1,600 feet in the air. From the forest path, which runs along the edge of the falls, there are a number of spectacular vantage points. We then check into our lodge and enjoy our Farewell Dinner and recount our adventures of the week. Overnight Victoria Falls - 1 night
Thursday, 19 August 2027: Return Home or Optional Early Morning Helicopter Ride over Falls before departing (B)
Sadly, our adventure comes to an end this morning. The international flights from VFA typically connect through either Johannesburg (JNB) or Cape Town (CPT). Depending on your flight, there is an opportunity for an early morning helicopter ride, what better way to enjoy the falls than having a bird's eye view. This needs to be booked in advance. If you are feeling adventurous, consider this optional excursion (see Space Reservation for pricing). If you wish to stay in Victoria Falls for an additional night, there is a post night optional available (see the reservation form for pricing).

Trip Cancellation / Trip Interruption Insurance is not included in the cost of the tour. It is your responsibility to determine the amount and type of coverage you require to recoup some or all of your travel investment, whether you cancel, are unable to complete the tour, or the tour cannot operate. Section 4.0 of WTT Terms & Conditions explains what will happen to your payments in the unlikely event that your tour cannot operate.
WTT is not licensed to sell travel insurance. You can purchase travel insurance from any provider you choose. To get an idea of rates, please go to NTA Travel Protection Plan (Enter 206063 for the "Tour Operator Location #") or TravelGuard.
International Tours: Standard health insurance plans often do not cover medical emergencies in other countries. As a solo traveler, insurance is essential to provide support and care coordination in the event of a medical emergency. Mandatory Emergency Medical/Evacuation Insurance is required to take this trip and is not included in the cost of the tour. It must cover air-evacuation from the destination as a result of a medical emergency during the trip.
The cost of Emergency Medical/Evacuation Insurance is dependent upon age and health and is not included in the tour price. This insurance typically does NOT cover trip cancellation and/or interruption, which is also strongly recommended. Suggested companies for Emergency Medical/Evacuation Insurance are: Allianz Travel Insurance and World Nomads.

- Select "Yes, I want to share a room" and WTT will assign you a roommate when Final Travel Instructions are sent.

- All shared rooms have 2 beds
- All shared rooms are non-smoking
- No special requests about your roommate can be accommodated
- See "Frequently Asked Questions" TAB for more details
How Active is this Tour?
On all WTT tours, travelers must be able to walk and stand for a sustained period of time. Thus, WTT tours are not suitable for anyone who is physically challenged or walking impaired and who cannot keep up with the moderate pace of the group.
The activities on this tour are rated as follows:
- 60% Easy
- 30% Moderate (distance traveled in boats and coaches)
- 10% Strenuous (remote location, off-road driving)
If you are in doubt as to your ability to meet the physical activity requirements, you should not sign up for this trip.
Read more about Activity Levels
What is the Group Size?
You will be introduced to the WTT Tour Leader when you receive your Final Travel Instructions, about 2-3 weeks before the tour begins.
Learn about your fellow travelers after final payment by visiting MyWTT. Room sharing assignments will be listed in the Final Travel Instructions.
What meals are included and how are dietary restrictions accommodated?
Each day of the itinerary lists the included meals for that day (B,L,D,O=Other). When a meal is not included, the WTT Tour Leader will have suggestions for where to eat.
You do not have to dine alone unless it is your personal choice. You'll most likely be dining with new acquaintances you've made, or you can join the Tour Leader.
Dietary Restrictions on International Tours: WTT has limited to no control over food selections or variety from meal-to-meal, especially at hotels. While we do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions and ensure variety of options, we cannot guarantee either.
What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
In August, temperatures in Cape Town and Johannesburg are typically in the mid-60s, dropping to the low 40s at night. It is warmer during the day in the Safari locations. Temperatures could reach mid 80s during the day but will be chilly 50s at night. We suggest you monitor weather apps leading up to the tour departure date for the most current information.
Note: When dining at the Game Lodge, you'll likely want to wear long sleeves, pants and socks to protect against insects and cooler nighttime temperatures. Be sure to apply insect repellents all over, especially around ankles, ears, knees and knuckles.
Dressing for Game Drives
- Morning temperatures are cool and crisp. Wear long pants and a jacket for comfort.
- At mid-day, the sun is strong; you will want adequate sun protection. You will be most comfortable wearing a light-weight shirt plus shorts.
- Evenings are chilly. You will want to layer and wear a jacket.
For This Trip You Will Need—
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, brimmed hat
- Insect repellent — Insects can be a nuisance. Packaged wipes are easier to pack and carry.
- Long-sleeved, lightweight shirt(s)
- Light-weight, weather-proof jacket
- Lightweight clothing (preferably cotton) in earthy, neutral colors; especially useful on walking safaris
You May Also Want—
- Handkerchief, bandana or scarf to protect neck and nose from the sun and dust.
- Refillable water bottle
- Swimsuit—The lodge and hotels have pools
- Slip-on shoes or sandals to wear around the lodges or to meals.
Do Not Bring—
- Clothing that is delicate, or expensive; the dust will likely ruin them.
- Camouflage clothing
- White shirts & Red clothing—it makes you highly visible to and attracts animals
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping aids, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
On every WTT tour, our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicles we use, the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings without assistance and the restrictions imposed by other forms of transportation such as small planes and boats.
- It is best to travel as lightly as possible. Most travelers regret when they have packed too much.
- The luggage requirements for this tour are very specific. There will be multiple internal flights on small planes. If your luggage does not comply, it will not be allowed on board. No exceptions will be made.
- Check-in baggage is limited to one suitcase. It needs to be soft (no hard outer shell), have no more than two wheels and weigh 44lbs or less. It should measure no more than 23.6" long, 15.7" high and 11.8" wide. We strongly suggest you use a durable soft-sided bag due to the nature of transport during this tour.
- Carry-on luggage has a weight restriction of 6.6lbs.
- Bring a small daypack/backpack for carrying personal items while on game drives
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings. We expect you to take your belongings from the coach to your room and to bring it back to the coach on days we change hotels. We do not provide luggage pulls; they are not safe and are inconvenient.
- Steps exist at most hotel entrances. On occasion the coach must unload passengers and luggage some distance from the hotel entrance.
- Keep in mind that you will be traversing airports as part of this itinerary and will need to handle your own luggage through customs. You will need to pay any and all charges you may incur by the airlines from overweight luggage.
What are the health recommendations for this tour?
While there are booster/vaccine recommendations for travel to this part of Africa, you can also consider other vaccinations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides additional guidance. Please discuss any vaccine or health concerns with your healthcare provider.
Malaria - This tour operates during the dry season, when the all-around risk is much lower. Taking anti-malarial medication is a personal choice and based on individual health assessments. If you are concerned, be sure to consult your doctor.
The possibility of contact with mosquitoes exists while on safari. It is good practice to avoid being bitten. You can significantly reduce the chance of being bitten by wearing protective clothing (long sleeves and pants) and using a quality mosquito repellent. Consumer Reports recommends brands containing 20% Picaridin or 25% DEET as the best defense against all types of mosquitoes and biting insects. Avoid natural or herbal based repellents as they do not provide adequate protection from being bitten.
What are the phone and internet recommendations for this tour?
- You should understand what your current cell phone plan includes in terms of data and minutes. Some, like certain T-Mobile plans, include an international package.
- Contact your cell phone service provider before departing about adding an international calling plan. Most carriers have flat daily rates which will allow your US-based phone to be functional upon arrival in a foreign country.
- Managing data while traveling internationally is important. Using WiFi when available and communicating through apps like What's App help you manage data usage while traveling.
- Learn how to make an international call BEFORE you leave. Consult your cell provider and check out the website www.HowtoCallAbroad.com.
What are the electricity requirements for this tour?
The standard voltage is 230V in South Africa and Namibia and 220V in Zimbabwe. This differs from that in North America as do the plug types. We suggest you purchase a universal plug adapter which supports a wide variety of sockets/plugs. You should also check your electronic devices for voltage compatibility. Most of today's electronics (tablets, laptops, phone chargers etc.) are multi-voltage and will work worldwide, without a converter. Consult your owner's manual for further details.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
Only you can determine the optimum amount of cash to take on tour. When budgeting for out-of-pocket expenses, there are several aspects to consider: whether the country your are visiting is a cash-based society, the number of meals you are responsible for, your individual shopping interests and habits, and cash for tipping (see tipping information below).
- South Africa’s official currency is the Rand (ZAR). Zimbabwe only uses Zimbabwe dollars (ZWD). Botswana uses Pula but the ZAR is widely accepted. Namibia uses Namibian dollars (NAD) but the SAR is widely accepted.
- Be sure to exchange dollars for Rand in Cape Town, as the farther you travel from the city, the more difficult it becomes to find exchange houses. Then once again, exchange USD for ZWD once you get to Zimbabwe. Most meals are included in this tour so you would only need cash for incidentals. You can use the Rand in Namibia and Botswana so the recommendation is to use the cash you have instead of multiple currencies.
- Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling and provide dates of travel.
- Safari lodges accept credit cards.
- Credit cards are widely accepted in most destinations. Be sure to investigate your card of choice as there are many credit cards that impose no foreign transaction fees and are better for international travel.
- If a merchant gives you the choice between making your transaction in USD or the local currency, always choose the local currency, to avoid dynamic currency conversion which includes a conversion fee.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
- You are responsible for tipping Game Lodge staff and House Boat crew. The typical amount suggested is $10 per day for the Houses Boat crew and $5 per safari for the guides.
- We suggest you read up on tipping culture in the various places you will be visiting so you can show your appreciation for any personal service provided with an appropriate gratuity.
- Be sure to tip your transfer driver once you've reached the Cape Town Hotel.
- Tipping in South Africa can be done in Rand or USD. A typical tip for good service in a restaurant is 10-15% of the bill. A typical tip for a taxi ride is 10% of the fare. At hotels, it is typical to tip housekeeping 50 Rand or a few USD for good service.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.
