Itinerary
Saturday, 06 February 2027: Arrive Mexico City; Welcome Dinner (D)
Welcome to Mexico City. Schedule your flight at your convenience but arrive no later than 4:00pm. Several staggered timed group transfers from the airport to the hotel will be provided. The tour begins at 6:00pm in the hotel lobby. After our Welcome Meeting, we will enjoy a Welcome Dinner to get better acquainted. Overnight Mexico City - 2 nights
Sunday, 07 February 2027: Mexico City Tour (B,L)
Today we explore Mexico City, the most populous city in North America and an important cultural center. After a short panoramic tour of the city, we stop at the National Museum of Anthropology, the largest museum in Mexico. The building is one of the most beautiful examples of contemporary Mexican architecture and is devoted to preserving the history of Mexico's pre-Hispanic civilizations. Following lunch together, we'll be dropped at the Plaza de la Constitucion, the massive main square better known as the Zócalo. Here we will see the ruins of Templo Mayor, a 13th-century Aztec temple that was demolished by the Spaniards to build a massive baroque Cathedral. This temple is thought to be the exact spot where the Aztecs saw their symbolic eagle perching on a cactus with a snake in its beak, the symbol of present-day Mexico. We return to the hotel late this afternoon.
Monday, 08 February 2027: Piedra Herrada Butterfly Sanctuary; Valle de Bravo (B)
We depart Mexico City and head toward Valle de Bravo. En route, we'll visit Piedra Herrada, Mexico's newest butterfly sanctuary, to hopefully see millions of monarchs in flight. This sanctuary is more remote and wild; to see the butterflies, we must hike up the mountain to get to where the butterflies are found. Though you can ride atop a horse much of the way, the last half-mile or so is a strenuous hike up and over steep and potentially slippery terrain, which takes about 45 minutes. In the end, it's worth it to see these majestic creatures, but we want you to be prepared! We then continue on to Valle de Bravo, named "Pueblo Magico" (magical town) in 2005, with its terracotta-tiled roofs, iron balconies and cobbled streets. Overnight Valle de Bravo - 2 nights
Tuesday, 09 February 2027: Trolley Tour; Free Afternoon (B,L)
After breakfast, we enjoy a tour of Valle de Bravo, which is a favorite weekend getaway for Mexico City's celebrities. We will travel by trolley to see Lake Avandarao, the Municipal Boardwalk and Dock and other charming sites in and around this hilly town. The afternoon is yours to enjoy as you wish.
Wednesday, 10 February 2027: Monarch Sanctuary of El Rosario; Travel to Morelia (B,D)
This morning, we head to the El Rosario Sanctuary, the largest monarch butterfly sanctuary in Mexico and a must-see destination. Presidential decrees in the 1980s declared these areas, still largely privately owned, as a federal reserve. In 2008, the reserve was designated a World Heritage site. The butterflies don't make it easy on us. We must hike up (and up!) into the reserve for about 3 miles where upon first glance, the trees will appear orange if the sun is shining. But look a little closer...the orange color is actually millions of butterflies whose collective weight can actually make the branches of the Oyamel trees sag! It's important to keep quiet so as not to disturb the butterflies. If you're not up for another hike, you can ride up the mountain on horseback but you'll still need to hike up about one mile further as the horses can only go so far. Be prepared for a very long day! We continue on to Morelia for the night and we'll have dinner together. Overnight Morelia - 2 nights
Thursday, 11 February 2027: Walking Tour of Morelia; Free Afternoon (B,L)
This morning we'll embark on a walking tour of Morelia, a lively city with a university and much cultural activity. The streets of the Central District are lined with colonial buildings with arches, baroque facades and walls of pink stone. It is one of the most important colonial cities in Mexico and is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. We'll see the magnificent Cathedral, the Plaza de Armas, the Palacio de Gobierno, the Palace of Clavijero, and the Sanctuary of our Lady of Guadalupe. After lunch together, the afternoon is free to spend as you wish.
Friday, 12 February 2027: Return to Mexico City; Farewell Lunch (B,L)
Today we make our way back to Mexico City. We'll break up the drive with a stop in the magical town of Toluca to see the stunning Cosmovitral, a stained glass mural and botanical garden. We then continue on to Mexico City, stopping for a late Farewell Lunch en route. Traffic in Mexico City is always a challenge but we expect to arrive late afternoon. Once we arrive at the hotel, the remainder of the day and evening are yours to explore further, shop for last minute souvenirs or simply rest and relax from the long day. Overnight Mexico City - 1 night
Saturday, 13 February 2027: Return Home from Mexico City (B)
Sadly, our adventure has come to an end. Make your return flight at your convenience. Transfers are not included but your Tour Director, in conjunction with the hotel concierge, can help with coordinating taxis and ride-shares to the airport if you so wish.

It is your responsibility to determine the amount and type of coverage you require to recoup some or all of your travel investment, whether you cancel, are unable to complete the tour, or the tour cannot operate. What do others say about this tour and traveling with WTT?
How Does Room Sharing Work?
On the Reservation Form there are 3 choices regarding room-sharing.
Note: Certain room-types may be unavailable at the time you make your reservation. If a room-type is unavailable the choice will be greyed out.
- Select "Yes, I want to share a room" and WTT will assign you a roommate when Final Travel Instructions are sent out.
- You can specify a roommate by entering her name where indicated. If your named roommate is not on the tour, for any reason, WTT will assign you a roommate unless you pay to have your own room, if available.
- Select "No, I do not wish to share a room" if you want to have your own room. Additional costs apply.
- All shared rooms have 2 beds
- All shared rooms are non-smoking
- No special requests about your roommate can be accommodated
- See "Frequently Asked Questions" TAB for more details
How Active is this Tour?
On all WTT tours, travelers must be able to walk and stand for a sustained period of time. Thus, WTT tours are not suitable for anyone who is physically challenged or walking impaired and who cannot keep up with the moderate pace of the group.
Take note: This is a physically demanding tour! You must be in good physical condition to see butterflies. The sanctuaries are in remote, under-developed, mountainous locations at high altitudes. You must be able to hike uphill at a steady pace for 45 minutes to 1 hour and be able to get on and off a horse.
Be sure to stay hydrated and avoid alcohol to reduce the possibility of altitude sickness.
The activities on this tour are rated as follows:
- 20% Easy
- 30% Moderate (high altitude, multiple walking tours on cobblestone streets, possible heat)
- 50% Strenuous (uphill hiking required within sanctuaries to see monarchs. These hikes are steep and can be quite rigorous)
If you are in doubt as to your ability to meet the physical activity requirements, you should not sign up for this trip.
Read more about Activity Levels
What is the Group Size?
You will be introduced to the WTT Tour Director when you receive your Final Travel Instructions, about 2-3 weeks before the tour begins.
Learn about your fellow travelers after final payment by visiting MyWTT. Room sharing assignments will be listed in the Final Travel Instructions.
What meals are included and how are dietary restrictions accommodated?
Each day of the itinerary lists the included meals for that day. When a meal is not included, the WTT Tour Leader will have suggestions for where to eat.
You do not have to dine alone unless it is your personal choice. You'll most likely be dining with new acquaintances you've made, or you can join the Tour Leader.
Dietary Restrictions: On international tours WTT has limited to no control over food selections or variety from meal-to-meal, especially at hotels. While we do our best to accommodate dietary requests and ensure variety of options, we cannot guarantee either.
What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
In general, this part of Mexico experiences comfortable weather in February with low humidity, sunshine and infrequent rainfall. Daytime highs are often in the 70s to low 80s, though it can feel substantailly warmer due to the high elevation. Nights can drop into the 40s and 50s. We suggest you monitor weather apps leading up to the time you depart for the most current information.
For This Trip You Will Need—
- Comfortable hiking shoes with good tread. Open toed shoes are not suitable.
- Athleisure wear or hiking pants
- Reusable water bottle(s)
You May Also Want—
- Brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
- Day pack that can be worn hands-free on horseback (e.g. backpack or cross-body bag)
- Neck gaiter or bandana—to keep dust at bay
- Medications to counter altitude sickness
- Fleece—Due to tree cover and higher altitudes, it will be noticeably cooler when visiting the butterfly sanctuaries. You may find it most comfortable to have clothing you can layer.
- Insect repellent
- Swimsuit—the Hotel Grand Mision Valle de Bravo has a pool and hot tub
- Collapsible trekking poles. Walking sticks are available for purchase at the sanctuaries.
Good Packing Habits—
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping aids, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing. If you care to dress up a bit for dinners you may consider packing a nice top.
- Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
On every WTT tour, our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicles we use and the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings without assistance.
- It is best to travel as lightly as possible. Most travelers regret when they have packed too much.
- You may bring one suitcase plus a carry-on bag.
- We recommend your suitcase be no larger than 26 inches high as measured from the FLOOR to the top of the retracted handle to make it easy for you to handle yourself. The small or medium-size in a 3-piece luggage set easily meets this requirement and should be plenty roomy for this length of trip.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings. We expect you to take your belongings from the coach to your room and to bring it back to the coach on days we change hotels. We do not provide luggage pulls; they are not safe and are inconvenient.
- Steps exist at most hotel entrances. On occasion the coach must unload passengers and luggage some distance from the hotel entrance.
What are the health recommendations for this tour?
Mexico City is situated at an altitude of more than 7,300 feet. The butterfly sanctuaries are located in the mountains at elevations nearing 10,000 feet. Altitude sickness strikes randomly, though this tour poses minimal risk for a healthy person. Symptoms include headache, shortness of breath and general lethargy. Take time to acclimatize, avoid alcohol and physical efforts during the first few days and drink plenty of water.
What are the phone and internet recommendations for this tour?
- You should understand what your current cell phone plan includes in terms of data and minutes. Some, like certain T-Mobile plans, include an international package.
- Contact your cell phone service provider before departing about adding an international calling plan. Most carriers have flat daily rates which will allow your US-based phone to be functional upon arrival in a foreign country.
- Managing data while traveling internationally is important. Using WiFi when available and communicating through apps like What's App help you manage data usage while traveling.
- Learn how to make an international call BEFORE you leave. Consult your cell provider and check out the website www.HowtoCallAbroad.com.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
Only you can determine the optimum amount of cash to take on tour. When budgeting for out-of-pocket expenses, there are several aspects to consider: the number of meals you are responsible for, the amount of money you like to have on-hand for snacks and drinks, and your individual shopping interests and habits.
- Notify your credit card (and debit card if using) issuer that you will be traveling and provide dates of travel.
- Mexico's official currency is the Mexican Peso (mx).
- Outside of Mexico City, most establishments only accept pesos (cash).
- Many public bathrooms in Mexico require 5mx for use. Keep a pocket of change for restroom visits.
- Our 2022 group found that ATMs in Mexico City would only dispense a maximum of $5000mx ($240 USD) and were out of cash at times. Therefore, it may be advisable to procure pesos in the US before departure, or be sure to exchange USD for pesos at the airport upon arrival. Once out of Mexico City, ATMs were found to be more reliable.
- Debit cards can be useful for cash advances, however in most international destinations, you are likely to need a card with a PIN and chip. ATMs are typically the best way of obtaining cash as they are found in most airports and big cities and tourist areas. However you should be aware that some issuing banks charge foreign transaction fees in addition to ATM fees and you should understand what fees your issuing bank will charge.
- We suggest you only use ATMs at the airport or at a bank, and not exchange money at kiosks on the street. Always use caution when withdrawing money.
- Do not rely on credit or debit cards as your only source of money. You should have local currency on hand for taxis, tips, small purchases, bathrooms, etc. as many small vendors only accept cash.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
- You are responsible for Tipping the In-Country Escort who travels with the group.
- We suggest you read up on tipping culture in the various places you will be visiting so you can show your appreciation for any personal service provided with an appropriate gratuity.
- Tipping is commonplace in Mexico. Though it is always optional, people serving you will appreciate the small token in exchange for good service. Many in the service industry rely on tips to earn a living wage.
- The "rules" for tipping in Mexico are similar to the US.
- When tipping, be sure to tip in Mexican pesos.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Director for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.
