Itinerary
Sunday, 30 May 2027: Arrive Charleston, WV; Welcome Dinner (D)
Schedule your arrival no later than 3:00pm and make your way to the hotel. Our Welcome Meeting kicks off at 4:00pm in the hotel lobby where we will make introductions before heading to dinner together to get better acquainted and discuss our upcoming adventure. Overnight Charleston, WV - 1 night
Monday, 31 May 2027: New River Gorge Hiking; Tree Tops Canopy Tour (B,L)
We're off to one of America's newest national parks, the New River Gorge. Don't let the name fool you, New River is recognized as one of the oldest rivers on earth. Once ravaged by timber and coal extraction, the gorge has evolved into a premier adventure destination. We'll spend several hours exploring this scenic area, perhaps along the Endless Wall Trail, a 2.4-mile moderate hike that offers wonderful vistas. After a picnic lunch, we begin the adrenaline rush with a zip line canopy tour through the old-growth hemlock forests for a bird's-eye view of the gorge. On this gravity powered zipline, you won’t have to use your hands to brake on the cable. Instead take in the sights as you zoom above the valley below. We'll traverse a network of platforms and sky bridges. Be advised there are weight restrictions (100-260 lbs.) for zip lining and all participants must be able to hike a trail that is 820 feet long at 10% grade. Overnight Lansing - 3 nights
Tuesday, 01 June 2027: White Water Rafting on the New River (B,L,D)
Adventure is calling! There isn't a better way to beat the heat than to slip into a raft and push off down a cool mountain river. "The New" as locals refer to it, is one of the world's oldest rivers according to geologists. In rafting parlance, it is a drop-pool river, which means placid pools are punctuated by moments of exhilaration, giving rafters time to relax and enjoy the beauty of the gorge. We plan to raft the Lower New, which features exciting whitewater and more than 25 rapids, though in mid-summer the water is typically lower than peak times. This is a full day (up to 6 hours) on the water. We'll return to our accommodations, before we gather for a well-earned casual dinner.
Wednesday, 02 June 2027: Exhibition Coal Mine - Underground Tour (B,L)
Today we make our way to Beckley. We begin at Beckley's Exhibition Coal Mine. Bring your jacket as we go underground for a tour of a vintage coal mine. Our guides share with us the history of the mine, the daily life of coal miners and the dangers they face while we travel through the old working sites of the mine. We have lunch together and enjoy time exploring the town of Beckley before returning the our cabins in Lansing.
Thursday, 03 June 2027: Bridge Walk; Return to Charleston; Farewell Dinner (B,D)
This morning we experience a different side of the gorge...the underside of the longest steel arch span in the western hemisphere. We will walk along the catwalk 25 feet beneath this impressive bridge. The catwalk is 2 feet wide with a substantial railing and everyone will be securely fastened onto a safety cable. The walk covers the entire 3,030-foot length of the bridge, but no worries, we move along at a leisurely pace and there is plenty of time to stop for photos. This is a great way to say farewell to wild and wonderful West Virginia. Afterward, we return to Charleston, making a few interesting stops along the way if time allows. This evening, we will gather for our Farewell Dinner and reminisce about all that we've achieved on tour. Overnight Charleston - 1 night
Friday, 04 June 2027: Return Home from Charleston, WV (B)

What do others say about this tour and traveling with WTT?
How Does Room Sharing Work?
On the Reservation Form there are 3 choices regarding room-sharing.
Note: Certain room-types may be unavailable at the time you make your reservation. If a room-type is unavailable the choice will be greyed out.
- Select "Yes, I want to share a room" and WTT will assign you a roommate when Final Travel Instructions are sent.
- You can specify a roommate by entering her name where indicated. If your named roommate is not on the tour, for any reason, WTT will assign you a roommate unless you pay to have your own room, if available.
- Select "No, I do not wish to share a room" if you want to have your own room. Additional costs apply.
- All shared rooms have 2 beds
- All shared rooms are non-smoking
- No special requests about your roommate can be accommodated
- See "Frequently Asked Questions" TAB for more details
How Active is this Tour?
- 35% Easy
- 50% Moderate (outdoor adventures)
- 15% Strenuous (zip-lining and rafting)
This is an active tour, more so than most WTT tours. Not only should you come ready to do everything you do on any other WTT tour, you should also be prepared to hike, raft, zipline and more. There are several moderate hikes and trails which have an elevated grade for longer distances. The hiking between zip-lining spots is rigorous. Between hiking and activities you can expect to walk between 4-6 miles a day. You should be able to sustain moderate physical exertion for 3-4 hours at a time. There are weight restrictions for zip-lining (100-260 lbs) and maximum torso capacity for PFDs for rafting (56 inches). Rafting participants should know how to swim.
Your Responsibilities as a Solo Traveler
As a solo traveler you are responsible for yourself, your possessions, your physical fitness, and all other aspects related to participation in the WTT tour you have chosen. Be sure to read the itinerary closely to better understand the physical requirements necessary for the tour.
WTT tours are not suitable for anyone whose mobility is challenged or compromised. If you struggle with walking, standing or negotiating stairs or if you are in doubt as to your ability to meet the physical activity requirements, you should not sign up for this trip.
What is the Group Size?
You will be introduced to the WTT Tour Leader when you receive your Final Travel Instructions, about 2-3 weeks before the tour begins.
Learn about your fellow travelers after final payment by visiting MyWTT. Room sharing assignments will be listed in the Final Travel Instructions.
What meals are included and how are dietary restrictions accommodated?
Each day of the itinerary lists the included meals for that day (B,L,D,O=Other). When a meal is not included, the WTT Tour Leader will have suggestions for where to eat.
You do not have to dine alone unless it is your personal choice. You'll most likely be dining with new acquaintances you've made, or you can join the Tour Leader.
Dietary Restrictions: Vegetarian and gluten-free dietary restrictions can be accommodated on this tour with limited selections.
What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
In general the temperature, rainfall and humidity levels vary based on the time of the year. We suggest you monitor weather apps leading up to the time you depart for the most current information.
For This Trip You Will Need—
- Small, comfortable daypack/backpack
- Reusable water bottle
- Comfortable clothing that enables you to take part in the various activities
- Water shoes, such as Keens or Tevas, that provide good traction. Old sneakers work fine too!
- Closed-toe shoes for zip-lining
- Swimsuit or other clothing that can get wet rafting. A 2-piece is preferable
You May Also Want—
- Rain jacket
- Synthetic quick-dry clothing for rafting
- Lightweight fleece jacket/sweater for the cool mornings and evenings
- Insect repellent, sunscreen, hat and sunglasses
- Waterproof pouch for your phone
- Sunglasses with a strap
Good Packing Habits—
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping aids, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
We will be using the WTT coach on this tour. The luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations, and we require that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings without assistance.
- It is best to travel as lightly as possible. Most travelers regret when they have packed too much.
- You may bring one suitcase plus small shoulder bag/day pack/purse.
- Maximum suitcase size: 22-23 inches in height, which fits in the overhead bin of most aircraft. Suitcases larger than this will not fit properly in the WTT coach; don't bring them.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings. We expect you to take your belongings from the coach to your room and to bring it back to the coach and load it on days we change hotels. We do not provide luggage pulls; they are not safe and are inconvenient. The possibility of steps exist at most hotel entrances.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
- You are responsible for tipping waitstaff, porters, or other individuals who provide a service to you at the hotel, or other public locations.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.
Can I transfer my deposit to another tour?
To get off this tour and register for another tour, you must follow these steps - in the order shown:

The Cancellation Confirmation email will list the amount of parked credits from this tour that are now available to use on a new reservation.

Note: If you used Parked Credits to pay the deposit on this tour, these credits cannot be used a second time and are not eligible to be transferred.
