Polar Bears Viewing: Canada
With Dogsledding Adventure in Manitoba
October 23 - October 27, 2027In October and November along the shores of Hudson Bay, one of the world's largest populations of polar bears congregate waiting for the waters to freeze. Once the ice forms, the bears can hunt for Arctic seal and prepare for the long winter ahead. This migration has made Churchill famous as the "polar bear capital of the world." The tour includes a direct charter flight from Winnipeg to Churchill and features two full days in a specially designed Tundra Buggy® that takes us out in the heart of polar bear country. Join us in the Great White North on this unique and unforgettable life experience to witness these majestic animals up-close in their natural habitat.

Itinerary
Saturday, 23 October 2027: Arrive Winnipeg, Manitoba; Welcome Meeting
Arrive in Winnipeg at your convenience and make your way on foot to our hotel conveniently located adjacent to Winnipeg’s James Armstrong Richardson International Airport. Relax before the tour begins at 6:00pm in the lobby of our hotel. We'll enjoy getting acquainted at our Welcome Meeting and learn more about what's in store over the next few days. Overnight Winnipeg - 1 night
Sunday, 24 October 2027: Fly to Churchill; Dog Sledding; Group Dinner (B,L,D)
We have an early morning charter flight (approx. 2.5 hours) from Winnipeg to Churchill. Upon arrival we enjoy a brief interpretive tour of Churchill, taking us past some of the local and historical points of interest, including the Manitoba Conservation's Polar Bear Holding Facility (affectionately known as polar bear jail), the Port of Churchill and more (weather permitting). We share lunch together and then are off to enjoy the ultimate thrill of riding behind a team of dogs who were born to run. Due to a lack of snow cover this time of year, the dogs pull wheeled carts rather than sleds. This evening we'll have dinner together at a local restaurant. Afterward, we visit the Polar Bears International (PBI) House, an innovated pubic space where we can learn more about polar bears, conservation efforts and research. Overnight Churchill - 2 nights
Monday, 25 October 2027: Full Day on Tundra Buggy; Bear Viewing (B,L,D)
We have another early morning start as we depart for our first full day aboard the unique Tundra Buggy®, an all-terrain vehicle that takes us out onto the tundra of the Churchill Wildlife Management Area, one of the best locations in the world to view and photograph polar bears in the wild. At this time of year, bears congregate along the shores of Hudson Bay, waiting for the waters to freeze so they can begin the winter seal-hunting season. We will spend hours in comfort watching the bears interact without invading their environment. We might see mothers with cubs and young adult males play-fighting. Occasionally an adult bear becomes curious and will approach the vehicle. A simple picnic-style lunch will be served onboard the buggy. We have dinner together at a local restaurant and enjoy a cultural presentation hosted by a local who will share stories of growing up in the North. If skies are clear tonight, we might glimpse the unpredictable yet spectacular Northern Lights just outside the hotel.
Tuesday, 26 October 2027: Tundra Buggy Excursion; Return Flight to Winnipeg (B,L,D)
We again spend the day aboard the Tundra Buggy in search of more polar bears. There are more than bears in this wilderness area so keep your eyes out for arctic fox and ptargmigan. Late this afternoon, we transfer directly to the airport for our return flight to Winnipeg. A light meal will be served on board. Overnight Winnipeg - 1 night
Wednesday, 27 October 2027: Return Home from Winnipeg (B)
Our adventure has come to an end. Schedule your return flight at your convenience. The hotel is an easy walk to the airport.

Suggested companies for Emergency Medical/Evacuation Insurance are: Allianz Travel Insurance and World Nomads.
Trip Cancellation / Trip Interruption Insurance is not included in the cost of the tour. It is your responsibility to determine the amount and type of coverage you require to recoup some or all of your travel investment, whether you cancel, are unable to complete the tour, or the tour cannot operate. What do others say about this tour and traveling with WTT?
How Does Room Sharing Work?
On the Reservation Form there are 3 choices regarding room-sharing.
Note: Certain room-types may be unavailable at the time you make your reservation. If a room-type is unavailable the choice will be greyed out.
- Select "Yes, I want to share a room" and WTT will assign you a roommate when Final Travel Instructions are sent.
- You can specify a roommate by entering her name where indicated. If your named roommate is not on the tour, for any reason, WTT will assign you a roommate unless you pay to have your own room, if available.
- Select "No, I do not wish to share a room" if you want to have your own room. Additional costs apply.
- All shared rooms have 2 beds
- All shared rooms are non-smoking
- No special requests about your roommate can be accommodated
- See "Frequently Asked Questions" TAB for more details
How Active is this Tour?
- 60% Easy
- 40% Moderate (dogsledding, cold temperatures, remoteness)
As a solo traveler you are responsible for yourself, your possessions, your physical fitness, and all other aspects related to participation in the WTT tour you have chosen. Be sure to read the itinerary closely to better understand the physical requirements necessary for the tour.
WTT tours are not suitable for anyone whose mobility is challenged or compromised. If you struggle with walking, standing or negotiating stairs or if you are in doubt as to your ability to meet the physical activity requirements, you should not sign up for this trip.
What is the Group Size?
You will be introduced to the WTT Tour Leader when you receive your Final Travel Instructions, about 2-3 weeks before the tour begins.
Learn about your fellow travelers after final payment by visiting MyWTT. Room sharing assignments will be listed in the Final Travel Instructions.
What meals are included and how are dietary restrictions accommodated?
Each day of the itinerary lists the included meals for that day (B,L,D,O=Other). When a meal is not included, the WTT Tour Leader will have suggestions for where to eat.
You do not have to dine alone unless it is your personal choice. You'll most likely be dining with new acquaintances you've made, or you can join the Tour Leader.
Dietary Restrictions on International Tours: WTT has limited to no control over food selections or variety from meal-to-meal, especially at hotels. While we do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions and ensure variety of options, we cannot guarantee either.
What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
In general, daytime temperatures are in the low 30s dropping to the low 20s at night. Although it is possible for Churchill to see snow in early November, it is rare for the snow to accumulate much at this time of year. Rain is a distinct possibility.
The ability to add and remove layers of clothing as the temperature warrants will enhance your comfort. Though we travel in the warmth of a Tundra Buggy®, temperatures can vary widely if the windows are open.
You may rent winter outerwear and boots upon arrival in Winnipeg if you prefer. It is best to arrange this prior to arrival to ensure proper sizing and availability.
For This Trip You Will Need—
- Warm, waterproof parka, preferably hooded
- Base layers
- Warm hat, scarf, gloves
- Warm rubber-soled winter boots with good traction
- A reusable water bottle is encouraged to keep the Tundra Buggies free from disposable water bottles and plastics that are difficult to recycle in this remote location.
You May Also Want—
- Snow pants or other waterproof layer
- Binoculars
- Water resistant day pack; a small backpack is a better option than a purse.
Good Packing Habits—
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate.
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping pills, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
On every WTT tour, our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicles we use, the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings without assistance and the restrictions imposed by other forms of transportation such as charter planes.
- You may bring either one suitcase plus a carry-on. The combined weight should be no more than 70 lbs. There is limited storage on the plane between Winnipeg and Churchill and space is also limited in the transfer vehicles. Your airline carrier to Canada likely restricts checked luggage to 50 lbs.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings. We expect you to be able to take your belongings from transport vehicles to your room and back. The possibility of steps exist at most hotel entrances.
What are the phone and internet recommendations for this tour?
Only you can determine your need to stay in contact while traveling.
- Your US cell phone will work in Canada, but most cell providers charge roaming fees. Be sure to check with your cell provider before leaving home to see what plans they may offer to reduce the cost of using your phone outside the US. Most providers offer Canada-only plans at reasonable rates.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
Only you can determine the optimum amount of cash to take on tour. When budgeting for out-of-pocket expenses, there are several aspects to consider: the number of meals you are responsible for, the amount of money you like to have on-hand for snacks and drinks and cash needed for tipping.
- Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling and provide dates of travel.
- Canada's official currency is the Canadian Dollar (CAD).
- ATMs are typically the best way of obtaining cash and Canadian Dollars can be withdrawn from any ATM in Canada. Consider exchanging currency or using the ATMs located in the Winnipeg airport upon arrival. We recommend you have Canadian dollars on hand before arriving Churchill. There is one readily accessible ATM near the post office in Churchill.
- Many places accept US dollars, however, expect your rate of exchange to be poor and change to be offered in CAD.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference.
What other Additional Information do I need to know?
- Cold weather gear can be rented. Your Program Manager will provide details after final payment for those interested.
- Due to the remoteness of this location, proof of medical and emergency evacuation travel insurance is required for this tour. It is the responsibility of the traveler to secure adequate insurance coverage for the level of protection desired.
Can I transfer my deposit to another tour?
To get off this tour and register for another tour, you must follow these steps - in the order shown:

The Cancellation Confirmation email will list the amount of parked credits from this tour that are now available to use on a new reservation.
