Itinerary
Saturday, 10 October 2026: Arrive Madrid; Welcome Dinner (D)
Schedule your arrival into Madrid no later than 3:00pm and take local transportation (or purchase an optional private transfer) to the hotel. The tour begins in the lobby of the hotel at 6:00PM. After our Welcome Meeting we will have dinner at a nearby, casual restaurant. Overnight Madrid - 2 nights
Sunday, 11 October 2026: Madrid City Tour; Free Time; Evening Tapas Tour (B,O)
We begin with a half-day city tour through modern Madrid to glimpse the skyscrapers on Castellana Boulevard and the iconic Bernabeu stadium, home to the renowned Real Madrid soccer team. Admire the extravagant 20th-century architecture along Gran Via as well as monuments to Cervantes and Christopher Columbus (Cristóbal Colón). We'll drive along the beautiful tree-lined 18th-century Prado Boulevard to admire the fountains, before stopping at the famous Museo del Prado, one of the world's most-visited museums. The Museo del Prado offers masterpieces that reveal the passionate heart of Spanish culture and history. Late afternoon is free for you to explore further or simply return to the hotel to rest. Your Tour Leader can provide suggestions for things to do. This evening, we experience a bit of the famous Spanish nightlife and Madrid's delicious tapas on a guided evening walking tour that will tantalize your taste buds! Remember, Spain marches to a different beat, and evenings typically run later than you might be used to at home.
Monday, 12 October 2026: Train to Granada; Alhambra Palace & Gardens (B,L)
We have an early start today to catch the train to Granada. The ride is a relaxing way to enjoy the dramatic landscapes of the Spanish countryside. Granada is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains at the convergence of three rivers. Upon arrival, we will enjoy a group lunch together. To get our bearings, we'll take a guided walking tour of the city with a stop at the Alhambra (subject to availability), a spectacular Moorish citadel and palace. The Alhambra is one of the most celebrated landmarks of the Islamic historical legacy and it's enchanting. Here, the walls have intricate geometric patterns, while hidden courtyards reveal fountains that have whispered secrets for centuries. The complex is immense and requires a lot of walking, sometimes up steep gradients and many stairs. In the evening, if you still have energy to explore, you might find yourself sipping mint tea in a traditional tetería or browsing for handcrafted tiles in the historic Alcaicería bazaar. Overnight Granada - 1 night
Tuesday, 13 October 2026: Travel to Seville via Cordoba (B)
Today we depart for Seville by motorcoach. En route is captivating Cordoba, a city with a rich blend of Roman, Arabic, and Spanish history. We stretch our legs on a leisurely 3-hour walking tour visiting top attractions like the Cordoba Mezquita, a cathedral converted from a mosque when Christians conquered the city in the 13th century, and the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, the Palace of the Christian Kings, built in the 14th century. We wander through the Jewish Quarter and see the Cordoba Synagogue. Our tour continues with a stop at El Zoco, a colorful market where artists paint and flamenco dancers practice. Following our afternoon in Cordoba, we head to Seville, Spain's fourth-largest city and arguably its most beautiful. Overnight Seville - 3 nights
Wednesday, 14 October 2026: Walking Tour of Seville; Free Afternoon; Paella Experience; Flamenco (B,D)
This morning we settle into Seville with a 3-hour walking tour with a local guide to see the Moorish-influenced Gothic Cathedral, one of the most impressive and widely recognizable churches in the world. We'll also explore the Royal Alcazar, originally built on a Moorish fort and the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe. The remainder of the afternoon is yours to further enjoy this charming city with suggestions from your Tour Leader. You may just want to stroll along the riverbank or people-watch in one of the cities gorgeous parks. We regroup in the early evening to enjoy a cooking demonstration (with eating!) of traditional seafood paella. We'll also learn how to make authentic Spanish sangria and try a traditional local dessert. Afterward, we'll witness the passion and power of a flamenco show.
Thursday, 15 October 2026: Day Excursion to Gibraltar (B)
Today is all about Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory situated on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula where British and Mediterranean influences are blended. It will take us about 2.5 hours to make the drive and once we've reached the territory, we'll have a short sightseeing tour to get our bearings and see "The Rock of Gibraltar," a limestone rock rising out of the sea. We may see playful wild Barbary macaques, a genus of gregarious Old World monkeys, who roam freely on the rocks. Perhaps you'll explore the Great Siege Tunnels, which were crucial in past military defenses. This afternoon, there will be a bit of free time to explore Gibraltar on our own. You may decide to check out the impressive rock formations at St. Michael's Cave or enjoy some authentic British fish and chips. Your Tour Leader will have suggestions for things to do. We return to Seville for the night.
Friday, 16 October 2026: Travel to Lagos, Portugal; Meulle de las Carbelas; Rabida Monastery (B)
This morning we travel by motorcoach to Portugal, entering the relaxed coastal atmosphere of the beautiful Algarve region. We'll make several stops along the way in Spain, first to see replicas of Christopher Columbus' ships at Muelle de las Carabelas (Wharf of the Caravels), where visitors can board the ships, explore their decks, and learn about the challenges faced by the sailors during the 15th century. We then visit La Rábida, a Franciscan friary in the southern town of Palos de la Frontera. The buildings here date from the early 15th century and showcase elements of both Gothic and Moorish revival architecture. In the 1400s the friary was one of the only places in the world that specialized in the study of celestial navigation, a crucial skill for sea voyages at that time. It is considered a birthplace of the idea of a "New World" and a symbol of the intellectual and intercultural movement important for Latin American identity known as Americanism. After a full day of travel, we arrive at our hotel in the late afternoon. Overnight Lagos - 2 nights
Saturday, 17 October 2026: Day in Lagos, Portugal; Evening Food Tour (B,O)
Lagos is a town that features a charming historic center and a stunning coastline with dramatic golden cliffs. Weather permitting, we'll begin with a boat tour of Benagil Cave, Portugal's most famous sea cave. It's about a 15-minute walk to get to the pier where the boat departs. If we're lucky, we might see dolphins frolicking in the wake of our boat. Once we return, there will be plenty of time to walk around to explore this beautiful coastal town or you may simply opt to return to the hotel and enjoy some down-time. We will re-group at the hotel late afternoon to head out on a food tour of Lagos. This will be a great way to eat like a local - and have a crash course in Portuguese gastronomy! Beyond the food, you'll also get to discover the different styles of local port with a tasting.
Sunday, 18 October 2026: Travel to Lisbon via Évora (B)
We spend most of today making our way to Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal. Along the way we'll stop in the city of Évora to explore the city center, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the ancient city walls, a testament to Évora's long and rich history or view the Roman Temple of Évora, dating back to the 1st century AD. You may decide to visit the Chapel of Bones- a unique and somewhat macabre attraction, lined with human bones and skulls. We'll arrive Lisbon in the evening. Be aware that due to the congested streets and city regulations, the coach may not be able to drop the group directly in front of hotel, so here's another reminder to pack only what you can manage.
Monday, 19 October 2026: Morning Tour of Lisbon, Afternoon Baking Class (B)
We begin this morning in the seaside town of Belém, the birthplace of many 15th-century navigators, to view the Monument to the Discoveries commemorating Portugal's Age of Exploration. We visit the Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most prominent examples of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style of architecture. This afternoon, we're in for a literal treat as we learn to make Pastel de Nata, a delicious Portuguese egg tart that originated in the 18th century. You'll discover the secret techniques behind the flaky pastry and caramelized custard. We return to the hotel late afternoon, leaving you time to explore or to take the evening to quietly absorb all you've experienced in these stunning locations.
Tuesday, 20 October 2026: Free Day; Optional Sintra Excursion; Farewell Dinner (B,D)
Today is a free day to explore Lisbon further. Your Tour Leader will have suggestions. Perhaps consider visiting the picturesque town of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched on a mountain about 35 minutes from Lisbon. This is an easy day trip from Lisbon. We will regroup this evening for our Farewell Dinner to share one last meal together and reminisce about our time together.
Wednesday, 21 October 2026: Return Home at your Convenience (B)
Sadly, our time together has come to an end. Make your return flight at your convenience. Based on the departure time you provide WTT, your Tour Leader will organize travelers into small groups so you can ride-share to the airport if you wish.

Your Responsibilities as a Solo Traveler
As a solo traveler you are responsible for yourself, your possessions, your physical fitness, and all other aspects related to participation in the WTT tour you have chosen. Be sure to read the itinerary closely to better understand the physical requirements necessary for the tour.
WTT tours are not suitable for anyone whose mobility is challenged or compromised. If you struggle with walking, standing or negotiating stairs or if you are in doubt as to your ability to meet the physical activity requirements, you should not sign up for this trip.
What is the Group Size?
You will be introduced to the WTT Tour Leader when you receive your Final Travel Instructions, about 2-3 weeks before the tour begins.
Learn about your fellow travelers after final payment by visiting MyWTT. Room sharing assignments will be listed in the Final Travel Instructions.
What meals are included and how are dietary restrictions accommodated?
Each day of the itinerary lists the included meals for that day (B,L,D,O=Other). When a meal is not included, the WTT Tour Leader will have suggestions for where to eat.
You do not have to dine alone unless it is your personal choice. You'll most likely be dining with new acquaintances you've made, or you can join the Tour Leader.
Dietary Restrictions on International Tours: WTT has limited to no control over food selections or variety from meal-to-meal, especially at hotels. While we do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions and ensure variety of options, we cannot guarantee either.
What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
In general the temperature, rainfall and humidity levels vary based on the time of the year. We suggest you monitor weather apps before you depart for the most current information.
For this Trip You May Want-
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Refillable water bottle
- Scarf to cover your head in cathedrals
- Smart-casual wear if you'd like to dress up a bit for dinners
- Lightweight but warm jacket/sweater for the cool mornings and evenings or the unusually brisk day
- Swimsuit
- Sunglasses, hat and sunscreen
Good Packing Habits—
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping aids, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
On every WTT tour, our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicles we use and the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings without assistance.
- It is best to travel as lightly as possible. Most travelers regret when they have packed too much.
- You may bring one suitcase plus a carry-on bag.
- We recommend your suitcase be no larger than 26 inches high as measured from the FLOOR to the top of the retracted handle to make it easy for you to handle yourself.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings. We expect you to take your belongings from the coach to your room and to bring it back to the coach on days we change hotels. We do not provide luggage pulls; they are not safe and are inconvenient.
- Steps exist at most hotel entrances.
- If you carry a purse, it should be able to be worn across your body, hands-free.
- In some cities on this tour, the coach may unload passengers and luggage some distance from the hotel entrance due to traffic congestion or restrictions on bus travel. Be prepared for a walk of up to 10 minutes between bus pick up/drop off location and hotel entrance.
What are the phone and internet recommendations for this tour?
- You should understand what your current cell phone plan includes in terms of data and minutes. Some, like certain T-Mobile plans, include an international package.
- Contact your cell phone service provider before departing about adding an international calling plan. Most carriers have flat daily rates which will allow your US-based phone to be functional upon arrival in a foreign country.
- Managing data while traveling internationally is important. Using WiFi when available and communicating through apps like What's App help you manage data usage while traveling.
- Learn how to make an international call BEFORE you leave. Consult your cell provider and check out the website www.HowtoCallAbroad.com.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
Only you can determine the optimum amount of cash to take on tour. When budgeting for out-of-pocket expenses, there are several aspects to consider: whether the country you are visiting is a cash-based society, the number of meals you are responsible for, your individual shopping interests and habits, and tipping expectations.
- Spain and Portugal's official currency is the Euro.
- Gibraltar's official currency is the Gibraltar Pound.
- ATMs are typically the best way of obtaining local currency; they are found in most airports and tourist destinations. ATMs of major banks often give much better exchange rates than currency-exchange kiosks.
- If using a debit card, it is good practice to limit the amount of cash available in the account and simply transfer money from another account if you need more at any point on tour. Always use caution when withdrawing money.
- Many travelers feel more comfortable having local currency before they depart for the tour. You may be able to order currency from your bank.
- Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling and provide dates of travel.
- Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted throughout Spain and Portugal. American Express, while widely accepted throughout Spain, is less common in Portugal. Many cards charge a foreign-transaction fee. Be sure to investigate your card of choice as there are many credit cards that impose no foreign transaction fees and are therefore better suited for international travel.
- If a merchant gives you the choice between making your transaction in USD or the local currency, always choose the local currency, to avoid dynamic currency conversion which includes a conversion fee.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
All tips to drivers and local guides who join the tour to lead individual activities will be paid on your behalf.
- You are responsible for Tipping the In-Country Escort who travels with the group. Budget 6-8 EUR a day.
- In Spain, tipping is rarely expected and if done, usually consists of no more than 1-2 euro. In restaurants with table service, a service charge is usually included in the bill. If it is not included, you should tip up to 10%. In more casual places, patrons either round up to the nearest euro or two. Tipping taxi drivers is almost never done.
- Tipping in Portugal is optional, but it is appreciated. In taxis, it's typical to round up the fare to the nearest euro. In inexpensive restaurants and cafes, you can simply round up your bill to the nearest euro but upscale restaurants may add a service charge that functions as a gratuity.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.
