From rural Vermont to New Hampshire’s White Mountains to the rugged coast of Maine, these states have a plethora of sights packed into a small footprint. We begin our trip in Vermont and make our way east, stopping to enjoy the scenery, the maple syrup, the mountains and picturesque villages. We spend two nights near Mount Washington in New Hampshire and finish along the coast of Maine. Plus, we’ll do a lot of leaf peeping as fall settles into the region. Itinerary
Monday, 21 September 2026: Arrive Burlington, VT; Welcome Dinner (D)
Schedule your arrival no later than 4:30pm and take local transportation to the hotel. The tour will begin at the hotel at 6:00pm with our Welcome Meeting followed by a Welcome Dinner to get better acquainted and discuss our upcoming adventure. Overnight Burlington - 2 nights
Tuesday, 22 September 2026: Shelburne Museum Complex (B)
Explore and discover art, history, and the natural beauty of Vermont at Shelburne Museum, an unconventional and utterly delightful destination just outside Burlington. Folk art, Impressionist paintings, circus collections, and even a steamboat—it’s all here on a beautifully landscaped campus of historic buildings and galleries, each one filled with fascinating collections. We'll spend the morning exploring the exhibits - there is truly something for everyone at this one-of-a-kind museum. We return to Burlington later this afternoon.
Wednesday, 23 September 2026: Montpelier State Capital; Maple Farm Visit (B,L)
We pack up and get on the road today. Before we get to New Hampshire, we've got several stops along the way that provide a unique look at things that make Vermont special. For example, Vermont is the nation's leading producer of maple syrup, so we will stop at a local maple farm and sugarhouse for an education on maple syrup production (and taste!). And we stop in Montpelier, the smallest state capital in the US, to tour the impeccably restored Montpelier State House, one of the oldest and best preserved in the country. As time allows, your Tour Leader may make additional stops as we leisurely drive the backroads. Our end destination is Bretton Woods and the Mount Washington area, where we will spend the next two nights. Overnight Bretton Woods, NH - 2 nights
Thursday, 24 September 2026: Flume Gorge & Bretton Woods Skyway Gondola (B)
Today we enjoy the beauty of the White Mountains. We'll visit Flume Gorge for a 2-mile walk to admire beautiful fall scenery and stunning waterfalls. The Flume is a natural gorge extending 800 feet at the base of Mount Liberty. It was "discovered" in 1808 by 93-year-old "Aunt" Jess Guernsey when she accidentally came upon it while fishing. Though some might find the gorge walk a bit challenging (it's uphill with lots of stairs!), the views at the end are worth it. Then we'll take a gondola ride at Bretton Woods for stellar views (weather permitting). The scenic journey offers panoramic vistas of the Mount Washington and the Presidential Range. We return to our Inn where there will be time to enjoy the amenities of this resort property.
Friday, 25 September 2026: Maine: Kennebunkport and Ogunquit (B,D)
We leave New Hampshire and travel to Kennebunkport, Maine. Settled in the 1600s, this is a long-time ship-building mecca where five-masted ships and schooners made their way down the river to the sea. Sea captains built fine mansions, many of which are preserved today as lovely inns with antique charm. Afterward, we continue on to Ogunquit with its beautiful sea walk and town. Overnight Ogunquit, ME - 1 night
Saturday, 26 September 2026: Ogunquit Free Time; Portland Head Light; Farewell Dinner (B,D)
Enjoy a leisurely morning in Ogunquit. You may want to walk along the “Marginal Way,” an outstanding and invigorating 1-mile winding footpath along the rocky coastline that joins the village to the harbor. This afternoon we will make our way to the Portland Head Light, one of the most photographed lighthouses in America. Though the structure itself is not open to the public, there is a lovely walking trail that provides quintessential views of this lighthouse that was commissioned by George Washington. We will enjoy a Farewell Dinner together. For convenience sake, we will stay near the Portland airport. Overnight Portland Airport area - 1 night
Sunday, 27 September 2026: Return Home from Portland, ME (B)
Sadly, our time together has come to an end. Based on the time your provide WTT, your Tour Leader can help organize travelers into small groups so you can ride-share to the airport if you wish.

On the Reservation Form there are 3 choices regarding room-sharing.

- All shared rooms have 2 beds
- All shared rooms are non-smoking
- No special requests about your roommate can be accommodated

What is the Group Size?
You will be introduced to the WTT Tour Leader when you receive your Final Travel Instructions, about 2-3 weeks before the tour begins.
Learn about your fellow travelers after final payment by visiting MyWTT. Room sharing assignments will be listed in the Final Travel Instructions.
What meals are included and how are dietary restrictions accommodated?
Each day of the itinerary lists the included meals for that day (B,L,D,O=Other). When a meal is not included, the WTT Tour Leader will have suggestions for where to eat.
You do not have to dine alone unless it is your personal choice. You'll most likely be dining with new acquaintances you've made, or you can join the Tour Leader.
Dietary Restrictions: Vegetarian and gluten-free dietary restrictions can be accommodated on this tour with limited selections.
What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
In general the temperature, rainfall and humidity levels vary based on the time of the year. We suggest you monitor weather apps leading up to the time you depart for the most current information.
For This Trip You May Want—
- Shoes that are comfortable for walking
- Refillable water bottle
- Smart-casual wear if you'd like to dress up a bit for dinners
- Lightweight but warm jacket/sweater for the cool mornings and evenings or the unusually brisk day
- Inexpensive rain poncho or travel umbrella, just in case
Good Packing Habits—
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping aids, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
We will use the WTT Coach. Luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicle and the requirement that travelers manage their belongings on their own.
- It is best to travel as lightly as possible. Most travelers regret when they have packed too much.
- You may bring one suitcase and a day pack or shoulder bag to keep with you in the coach.
- Maximum suitcase size: 22-24 inches in height. This is the size of bag that fits into the overhead bins of aircraft. Suitcases larger than this will not fit properly in the WTT coach; don't bring them.
- The weight of your bag should not exceed 30 pounds as you will need to lift it into the coach luggage compartment.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings. We expect you to take your belongings from the coach to your room and to bring it back to the coach and load it on days we change hotels. We do not provide luggage pulls; they are not safe and are inconvenient. The possibility of steps exist at most hotel entrances.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
- You are responsible for tipping waitstaff, porters, or other individuals who provide a service to you at the hotel, or other public locations.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.
