Itinerary
Saturday, 08 August 2026: Arrive Iceland; City Walking Tour; Welcome Dinner (D)
Schedule your flight to arrive Iceland no later than 10:00am. Most flights into Iceland from North America are overnight. We suggest you use the easy FlyBus service to get to the hotel. The tour begins with our Welcome Meeting begins in the lobby of the hotel at 12:00 Noon. We're then off to enjoy a walking tour of Reykjavik, the world's most northerly capital city and home to more than one-third of Iceland's population. We'll have dinner together tonight and discuss our upcoming adventure. Overnight Reykjavik - 5 nights
Sunday, 09 August 2026: South Shore Adventure; Glacier Walk (B,L)
Today, we will drive through the fertile farmlands of Southern Iceland toward the majestic mountains that tower over the coast. We begin at the gorgeous Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall that is fed by melting water from the famed glacier-capped Eyjafjallajokull volcano, last active in 2010. This powerful waterfall cascades into a pretty meadow but is best known for the walking path that runs behind the curtain of water where visitors can enjoy a truly unique viewpoint. We continue to Solheimajokull Glacier to walk through a frozen wonderland of different shades of glacier ice. We will enjoy lunch together before venturing on to other sites including Skogafoss, a 197-foot waterfall near a picturesque sheep farm. On our return to Reykjavik, we'll stop at Reynisfjara beach, known for striking columns of basalt.
Monday, 10 August 2026: Vidgemlir Cave; Hot Springs & Baths; Settlement Center (B,L)
We depart this morning for Vidgemlir Cave, hailed as the mightiest of Iceland's caves. We will get a bit of a workout today, navigating the stairs inside the cave but it's worth it. The diversity and grandeur here is unrivaled making for an unforgettable experience. You'll want to bundle up as it's cold in the cave and ensure you have appropriate footwear as the paths can be a bit slippery. From Vidgelmir, we drive to the Hraunfossar waterfall, an exceptionally beautiful and unusual natural phenomenon where water seems to magically appear from the lava, and enjoy a delightful and relaxing soak in the wonderful Krauma natural geo-thermal baths. This afternoon, we travel onto Borgarnes to visit the Settlement Center, a remarkable multimedia exhibition that uses the Sagas to explore the history of Iceland’s early settlement by Nordic Vikings. Half of the center tells the story of Egill Skalla-Grímsson, a colorful figure from one of the best-loved Icelandic Sagas, Egill’s Saga. We return to Reykjavik this evening.
Tuesday, 11 August 2026: Thingvellir National Park; Gullfoss Waterfall; Snowmobiling; Geysir (B,L)
We begin with a drive over the Mosfellsheidi plateau toward the UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park, a remarkable geological site and the most historic site on the island as the world's oldest democratic parliament was founded here in 930. The canyon here is the meeting point of two of the earth’s tectonic plates. This combination of natural and historical significance make it inseparable from the fabric of Icelandic national life. We then drive to Gullfoss (Golden Waterfall) to see icy water thunder into a deep gorge. We'll get our adrenaline pumping with a ride over Langjökull Glacier aboard a 2-person snowmobile. Be sure to bring a valid driver's license if you wish to operate the snowmobile. We will enjoy lunch together and warm our bellies with fresh soup from a tomato greenhouse before we head to the famed Geysir Hot Spring area, which has given its name to hot springs the world over. This is a long, but worthwhile day.
Wednesday, 12 August 2026: Sky Lagoon; Solar Eclipse Viewing; Farewell Dinner (B,D)
This morning we head to the famous Sky Lagoon, a unique wonder of nature with warm, mineral-rich geothermal water situated on Skerjafjordur bay. The beautiful infinity edge pool offers stunning Atlantic Ocean coastline views. We return to our hotel to relax or pack before our late afternoon departure to view the Solar Eclipse. Special eye protection will be provided. Tonight we enjoy a Farewell Dinner and recount our adventures of the past week.
Thursday, 13 August 2026: Return Home (B)
Sadly, it is time to return home. Consider an afternoon flight if you want to have a little more time in Reykjavik, remembering that your departure time from the hotel in Reykjavik needs to be 4.5 hours prior to your flight departure time to allow time to get to the airport.
Road, snow or other weather conditions may cause cancellation or modification of activities.

- All shared rooms have 2 beds
- All shared rooms are non-smoking
- No special requests about your roommate can be accommodated

Your Responsibilities as a Solo Traveler
As a solo traveler you are responsible for yourself, your possessions, your physical fitness, and all other aspects related to participation in the WTT tour you have chosen. Be sure to read the itinerary closely to better understand the physical requirements necessary for the tour.

What is the Group Size?
You will be introduced to the WTT Tour Leader when you receive your Final Travel Instructions, about 2-3 weeks before the tour begins.
Learn about your fellow travelers after final payment by visiting MyWTT. Room sharing assignments will be listed in the Final Travel Instructions.
What meals are included and how are dietary restrictions accommodated?
Each day of the itinerary lists the included meals for that day. When a meal is not included, the WTT Tour Leader will have suggestions for where to eat.
You do not have to dine alone unless it is your personal choice. You'll most likely be dining with new acquaintances you've made, or you can join the Tour Leader.
Dietary Restrictions: On international tours WTT has limited to no control over food selections or variety from meal-to-meal, especially at hotels. While we do our best to accommodate dietary requests and ensure variety of options, we cannot guarantee either.
What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
The Icelandic climate is very unpredictable year-round and changes many times throughout the course of a day. In early August, you can generall anticipate daytime temperatures in the 50s. Precipitation and wind are common. We recommend you always dress in layers. We suggest you monitor weather apps leading up to the time you depart for the most current information.
For This Trip You Will Need—
- Attire appropriate for outdoor winter walking, including a warm, waterproof coat and comfortable, waterproof walking shoes/boots.
- Clothes that are easily layered for warmth, including a base layer (e.g. long underwear)
- Swimsuit for hotel hot tub, sauna, and thermal pool visits
- Reusable water bottle—Iceland's drinking water is extremely good
- Flip-flops for use at geothermal pools
- Wool socks, warm hat and scarf
- Gloves — we suggest 2 pairs in case one gets wet
- Sunglasses — we strongly recommend eye protection due to summer's low sun angles, glacier glare, 16-17 hours of sun each day, and wind/dust protection
Good Packing Habits—
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping aids, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
- It is best to travel as lightly as possible. Most travelers regret when they have packed too much.
- You may bring one suitcase plus a carry-on bag.
- We recommend your suitcase be no larger than 26 inches high as measured from the FLOOR to the top of the retracted handle to make it easy for you to handle yourself.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings. We expect you to take your belongings from the coach to your room and to bring it back to the coach on days we change hotels. We do not provide luggage pulls; they are not safe and are inconvenient.
- Steps exist at most hotel entrances. On occasion the coach must unload passengers and luggage some distance from the hotel entrance.
- Keep in mind that you will be traversing airports as part of this itinerary and will need to handle your own luggage through customs. You will need to pay any and all charges you may incur by the airlines from overweight luggage.
What are the phone and internet recommendations for this tour?
- You should understand what your current cell phone plan includes in terms of data and minutes. Some, like certain T-Mobile plans, include an international package.
- Contact your cell phone service provider before departing about adding an international calling plan. Most carriers have flat daily rates which will allow your US-based phone to be functional upon arrival in a foreign country.
- Managing data while traveling internationally is important. Using WiFi when available and communicating through apps like What's App help you manage data usage while traveling.
- Learn how to make an international call BEFORE you leave. Consult your cell provider and check out the website www.HowtoCallAbroad.com.
What are the electricity requirements for this tour?
How much money should I bring on this tour?
Only you can determine the optimum amount of cash to take on tour. When budgeting for out-of-pocket expenses, there are several aspects to consider: the number of meals you are responsible for, the amount of money you like to have on-hand for snacks and drinks, your individual shopping interests and habits, and cash for tipping.
- Iceland’s official currency is the Icelandic Krona (ISK).
- ATMs are the most practical and reliable way of obtaining ISK. Upon arrival at Keflavík Airport, you'll find ATMs as well as the currency exchange desk. You must know your 4-digit PIN to access ATMs.
- Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling and provide dates of travel.
- Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted throughout Iceland; AMEX less so. ApplePay and GooglePay are also widely used. Most vendors in Iceland seem to prefer card or e-wallet payments over cash.
- Many credit cards charge a foreign-transaction fee which can add 3% or more on each purchase and up to 10% if using a credit card to withdraw local currency. Be sure to investigate your card of choice as there are many cards that impose no foreign transaction fees and are better suited for international travel.
- If a merchant gives you the choice between making your transaction in USD or the local currency, always choose the local currency to avoid dynamic currency conversion which includes a conversion fee.
- More and more, restaurants no longer allow groups to split the bill. Therefore, you might want to have cash-on-hand for meals when dining with others in the group.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
Tips to local day guides and drivers will be paid on your behalf.
- It is not common to tip in Iceland restaurants; most bills already include a service charge.
- The FlyBus driver is not expecting a tip.
- We strongly encourage you to tip the in-country guide who accompanies the group throughout the duration of the tour in appreciation of service and helpfulness. As a guideline, plan to tip $40-50 in total at the conclusion of your time together. Tipping in USD is appropriate.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.
