Itinerary
Sunday, 21 April 2024: Arrive Washington, DC; Welcome Dinner (D)
Welcome to Washington, DC! Schedule your arrival into Reagan National Airport (DCA) no later than 4:00pm and take local transportation to our hotel, which is conveniently located in downtown Washington. Our tour begins at 5:00pm in the lobby of our hotel. We’ll make introductions at our Welcome Meeting and then walk to a local restaurant to become better acquainted over our Welcome Dinner. Overnight Washington DC – 6 nights
Monday, 22 April 2024: Trolley Tour; Capitol Hill; Arlington National Cemetery (B)
Washington, DC, is a city of memorials and monuments dedicated to those who played a major role in shaping our nation, and this morning we will get orientated and better acquainted as we cruise along on a narrated trolley tour that will take us past many of the key sites in and around the National Mall, America’s most visited national park. On our way we will visit the US Capitol, one of the most symbolically important and architecturally impressive buildings in America. Not only will we see the grounds it sits on but tour inside the stately building as well. Later we visit Arlington National Cemetery, a solemn place honoring those who served this nation. We will have the opportunity to visit the Eternal Flame where President John F. Kennedy is laid to rest and see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Tuesday, 23 April 2024: Library of Congress; Monuments by Moonlight (B,L)
Our destination this morning is the Library of Congress, which is a visual treasure. Stained-glass skylights, inlaid Italian marble floors, gorgeous murals and intricately carved architectural elements all contribute to the Library’s palatial feel. After lunch there are so many possibilities. The National Museum of the American Indian, the National Air and Space Museum and the National Gallery of Art are in easy walking distance. This evening, we're in for a treat as we take in this DC at night, when the monuments glow and the grandeur and profound significance of every monument is magnified by the light of the moon. It's a unique and extraordinary look at Washington, DC.
Wednesday, 24 April 2024: Mount Vernon (B,L)
This morning we travel by coach along the scenic G.W. Parkway to Mount Vernon, the ancestral home of George and Martha Washington. Mount Vernon is today one of the nation’s most beloved historic sites. We will tour the meticulously restored mansion, wander among the beautiful gardens, and come away with a richer understanding of the legacy Washington built for generations to come. We return to DC later this afternoon where you'll have time on your own to explore or relax at the hotel.
Thursday, 25 April 2024: Walking Tour; Ford's Theatre Performance (B,D)
We start our morning with a historical walking tour of Abraham Lincoln's Washington and try to envision what life was like here in the 1860s. We will see sites associated with Lincoln's term as president as well as those related to this nations capital legacy. This walking tour begins at the White House gates, travels through Lafayette Square, and ends at Ford's Theatre, the place where Lincoln's story ends. Tragically, Lincoln was the first American leader to be assassinated. This afternoon is yours to explore as you wish. We will regroup at one of Washington, DC's most iconic restaurants, Ben's Chili Bowl, for a simple dinner of half-smoked sausages and chili cheese fries. Then we're off to Ford's Theatre to enjoy a performance (schedule permitting).
Friday, 26 April 2024: Free Day in Washington, DC; Farewell Dinner (B,D)
This day is yours to explore what interests you most. In addition to the Smithsonians, there are a variety of other world-class museums, such as the haunting Holocaust Museum or the intriguing International Spy Museum. The National Museum of Women in the Arts is another great visit. It's the only museum in the world that focuses solely on female artists. Please note that if you'd like to visit the White House, you must request a tour through your Member of Congress prior to arriving in Washington, DC. Your Tour Leader will have suggestions and help to map out a memorable day for you. We'll regroup for our Farewell Dinner to share our favorite moments from this past week in our nation’s capital.
Saturday, 27 April 2024: Depart from Washington, DC (B)
Sadly, our time together has come to an end. Schedule your flight to depart at your convenience. Your Tour Leader can assist with organizing travelers into small groups so you can ride-share to the airport if you wish.
This is a walking-intensive tour. The National Mall area is vast as are the interiors of the buildings and museums we will visit.

What do others say about this tour and traveling with WTT?
How Does Room Sharing Work?
On the Reservation Form there are 3 choices regarding room-sharing.
Note: Certain room-types may be unavailable at the time you make your reservation. If a room-type is unavailable the choice will be greyed out.
- Select "Yes, I want to share a room" and WTT will assign you a roommate when Final Travel Instructions are sent.
- You can specify a roommate by entering her name where indicated. If your named roommate is not on the tour, for any reason, WTT will assign you a roommate unless you pay to have your own room, if available.
- Select "No, I do not wish to share a room" if you want to have your own room. Additional costs apply.
- All shared rooms have 2 beds
- All shared rooms are non-smoking
- No special requests about your roommate can be accommodated
- See "Frequently Asked Questions" TAB for more details
How Active is this Tour?
Because of this requirement, WTT tours are not suitable for anyone who is physically challenged, walking impaired, or is a slow walker that cannot keep up with the pace of the group.
This is a walking-intensive tour. The National Mall is a vast park and the important sights are spread across the Mall. We use public transportation to navigate the city, which always requires a walk from the Metro system to the venue. Most days you will find yourself walking upwards of 5 miles.
The activities on this tour are rated as follows:
- 30% Easy
- 60% Moderate (multiple walking tours and mass transit use)
- 10% Strenous (extensive urban walking)
If you are in doubt as to your ability to meet the physical activity requirements, you should not sign up for this trip.
Read more about Activity Levels
What meals are included and how are dietary restrictions accommodated?
- Breakfast daily
- 2 Lunches
- 3 Dinners (at local restaurants)
Selections for the included lunches and dinners will highlight the local cuisine. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dietary requests can be accommodated on this tour with limited selections.
What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
Late April temperatures in Washington, DC, range from the mid-50s overnight to the 70s during the day. Expect it to be chilly due to gentle breezes. Since April is considered the wettest month of the year, a shower is to be expected.
For This Trip You Will Need—
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Backpack or cross body purse for hands-free travel on the DC Metro
You May Also Want—
- Smart-casual wear if you'd like to dress up a bit for dinners
- Fleece or lightweight but warm jacket for the unusually brisk day
- Inexpensive rain poncho just in case
- Refillable water bottle
Good Packing Habits—
- Pack a KN-95 mask to be worn based on preference and assessment of personal risk. Consider packing a rapid COVID test so you are prepared for any situation in which you might need or want to test.
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping pills, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
- Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
- We strongly recommend you bring only one suitcase plus small shoulder bag/day pack/purse.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
Only you can determine the optimum amount of cash to take on tour. When budgeting for out-of-pocket expenses, there are several aspects to consider: the number of meals you are responsible for, the amount of money you like to have on-hand for snacks and drinks, and your individual shopping interests and habits. Be sure to keep cash on hand for sharing restaurant tabs, cabs, tips, and smaller purchases. More and more, restaurants are no longer allowing groups to split the bill. Therefore, you might want to have cash-on-hand for meals on your own when dining with others in the group.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
All tips to local guides during your tour will be paid on your behalf.
- You are responsible for tipping shuttle and ride-app drivers, waitstaff, porters, or other individuals who provide a service to you at the hotel, or other public locations.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.
