(C) Owyhee River Rafting
A "Best of Nat Geo" River
The Owyhee River in Idaho and Oregon is considered the "Sistine Chapel" of western canyonlands, one of the reasons it was named a "Best of Nat Geo" River. Its remote canyon scenery is a favorite destination for whitewater rafting connoisseurs. Launches on the Owyhee River are strictly controlled as more than half of the river is designated Wild & Scenic by Congress. You'll see multitudes of wildflowers, birds, and reptiles as we raft through the whitewater rapids. Camps are set on white sand beaches among juniper trees and sagebrush. As our guides prepare dinner, you might soak in a hot spring or hike up a canyon draw to see the magnificent sunset. This incredible desert canyon is rarely visited, and this will be a private WTT trip.

Itinerary
Tuesday, 25 May 2021: Arrive Boise; Welcome Meeting & Dinner (D)
Schedule your arrival no later than 2:30pm and take local transportation to the hotel. The tour will begin at 4:00pm in the lobby of the hotel. Our Welcome Meeting will be followed by dinner together to get acquainted and discuss our upcoming adventure. Overnight Boise - 1 night
Wednesday, 26 May 2021: Put-in on the Owyhee River; River Rafting (B,L,D)
For five days we will raft the Owyhee River. The Owyhee River is a spectacular place with scenery reminiscent of places like Bryce and Zion National Parks. But, unlike these other national parks, few people are given permission by the National Park Service to raft through the deep canyons of the Owyhee. Our adventure begins! Tonight, we set up camp on a sandy beach on river's edge and enjoy dinner. Overnight Owyhee River Campsites - 4 nights
Thursday, 27 May 2021: River Rafting; Free Time for Hiking or Relaxing (B,L,D)
Today, after a restful night and breakfast we set out again. We'll see some dramatic geologic formations along the way, some of which are similar to the Dakota badlands. When we stop for the day, there will be plenty of hiking possibilities and plenty of free time for relaxing, photography, and bird watching.
Friday, 28 May 2021: River Rafting; Free Time for Hiking or Relaxing (B,L,D)
After coffee and breakfast, we'll spend the day on the river exploring. We'll continue to enjoy the Owyhee Canyonlands with dramatic canyon scenery and to luxuriate in the feeling of peace and seclusion that makes it easy to leave the outside world behind. The Owyhee is some of the most remote river rafting in the continental United States. This afternoon, there will be free time for exploring, hiking or simply relaxing on the river's edge.
Saturday, 29 May 2021: River Rafting; Evening Hot Springs (B,L,D)
The scenery just keeps getting better! Our trip will take us through Chalk Basin as well as the gorgeous Green Dragon Canyon, where 1,000 foot walls dwarf our rafts. We'll see historic native sites, western ranches and soaring vistas as we raft along, discovering the Owyhee River and its many secrets. This afternoon, there will likely be time for a soak in the river's hot springs.
Sunday, 30 May 2021: River Rafting; Afternoon Take-out; Farewell Dinner (B,L,D)
Today we raft to our takeout point at Birch Creek, arriving mid-afternoon. Vans will pick us up and bring us back to Boise, Idaho, where we'll spend the night and have our Farewell Dinner. Overnight Boise - 1 night
Monday, 31 May 2021: Return Home from Boise (B)
Sadly, our time together has come to an end. Based on the departure flight time you provided WTT, your Tour Leader will organize travelers into small groups so you can ride-share to the airport if you wish.

What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
In general the temperature, rainfall and humidity levels vary based on the time of the year. We suggest you monitor weather apps before you depart for the most current information. For United States travel weather refer to http://www.weather.gov/.
Bring clothes that layer so you can adjust to varying temperatures. It is not uncommon to see snow flurries and 95 degree temperatures in the same day. There is the possibility of wind, rain, heat, sun, cold temperatures and cold water conditions. Please be prepared for all kinds of weather. Most days, suitable rafting attire consists of quick-dry shorts, t-shirts, hats, sunglasses and sun screen. While in the raft comfortable PFDs (personal flotation devices) are provided and required to be worn at all times.
There is no electricity on the river so charge your camera battery and leave the charger behind at the lodge, along with hair appliances (hairdryer, flatiron, etc) any nicer travel clothing and your cell phone (there is no cell service on the river).
For the Trip You Will Need—
- Quick-drying shorts & t-shirts
- Lightweight rain jacket/shell; ponchos are not recommended.
- Fleece jacket or mid weight wool sweater for warmth
- One long-sleeved shirt for sun protection
- One pair long pants - quick-dry with legs that zip off to become shorts is the best option.
- Rubber-soled, closed-toe shoes that can get wet and that you can hike in. Keens or Tevas work well.
- Comfortable and warm clothing and footwear for lounging in the lodge.
- Sunscreen, insect repellent, brimmed hat & sunglasses with a lanyard, lipbalm
- Swimsuit
- Small hand towel and washcloth
- Small container of biodegradable soap/shampoo (not provided at lodges along The Rogue)
- Reusable water bottle
You May Also Want—
- Small travel pillow
- Rain suit
- Synthetic socks in case of sunburn and/or warmth
- Binoculars
- Zip-loc bags for keeping items dry
- Long underwear if the forecast is cool.
- Gloves for paddling
- Headlamp or small flashlight
- Skin lotion
- Plastic bags to separate your dirty/wet and dry clothes
- 2-3 carbiners for clipping items to the boat
Good Packing Habits—
- Leave jewelry, expensive watches and other valuables at home.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
At the rafting orientation meeting, you will receive 2 dry bags for individual use.
Personal Dry Bag—
This bag is for the things you only need while in camp. Think of it as your checked luggage at the airport. Once packed, it will be strapped down for the day. The bag is approximately 16" in diameter X 33' tall. Pack belongings in a duffel bag, which you then put inside your dry bag. This makes for easier corralling of your personal items. Your personal dry bag is likely to include: (provided) sleeping bag, flannel liner and pillow as well as your personal changes of clothing and personal toiletries.
Ditty Bag (A Small Daypack)—
This smaller bag is intended to carry all those little things you would like to have with you during the day on the river. This bag is like your purse. It is 9" in diameter X 20' tall. It is carried on the by your side so you can access it anytime. Items for your ditty bag might include: camera, medications, sun-block, lip balm, hat, rain gear, etc. Although these bags are water resistant, we advise using Ziploc bags as an extra measure of caution to protect items that shouldn't get wet.
Calls of Nature
A latrine is set up each evening at camp for solid waste only. Your body will quickly adjust to the rhythm of the trip.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
On every WTT tour, our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicles we use, the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings without assistance and the restrictions imposed by other forms of transportation such as river rafts!
- You may bring one soft-sided bag like a duffel bag or backpack to take with you on the river. The size of the bag should be no larger than 12'X13'X24 in size. Due to raft space and weight allowances please limit your gear to 20-25 pounds. Absolutely NO SUITCASES can be brought on the river.
- You will be provided with water-tight bags.
What are the phone and internet recommendations for this tour?
There is no cell service or WiFi on the river so you may want to leave your phone behind. While on the river there is no way to be reached. You will be unable to receive any messages until you are off the river. Friends and family should leave a message on your cell phone to be returned by you once off the river.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
Only you can determine the optimum amount of cash to take on tour. When budgeting for out-of-pocket expenses, there are several aspects to consider: the number of meals you are responsible for, the amount of money you like to have on-hand for snacks and drinks, and your individual shopping interests and habits.
- Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling and provide dates of travel.
