(C) San Antonio & Texas Hill Country
With a Visit to LBJ's Library
Have you ever been to San Antonio? If not, you're in for a treat. Old Spanish flavor, multi-cultural heritage and numerous parks and plazas make this one of America's most picturesque cities. One of the city's premier attractions is the tree-lined Riverwalk that meanders through the city center. Using San Antonio as a base, we will explore both the city and the surrounding area. We'll see the most recent US addition to UNESCO's World Heritage list—the San Antonio Missions and visit the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library and Museum. Plus, we'll spend a day in Texas Hill Country, strongly influenced by the German immigrants who originally settled here. San Antonio is one of our favorite cities and we're sure you'll agree!

Itinerary
Monday, 25 May 2020: Arrive San Antonio, River Walk Boat Tour; Welcome Dinner (D)
Schedule your arrival no later than 3:30pm and take local transportation to the hotel. The tour will begin at 5:00pm in the lobby of the hotel with our Welcome Meeting, followed by a Welcome Dinner at a local restaurant. Afterward, we will hop on a barge to float along the San Antonio River and get better acquainted with the famed River Walk, a verdant oasis of cypress-lined paved paths, arched stone bridges and lush landscapes. It gently winds through the city center, providing easy access to the city’s cultural hot spots, historic sites and other attractions. Overnight San Antonio - 5 nights
Tuesday, 26 May 2020: The Alamo; Tower of Americas; Institute of Texan Cultures (B)
Remember the Alamo! Heroes died here fighting for freedom. Their call for aid and refusal to surrender in the face of overwhelming odds stirred a young America and helped give birth to Texas. Today the Alamo is the heart of San Antonio and it is Texas' most visited historic landmark. We start our day walking these hallowed grounds. We'll then switch gears and visit the observation deck of the 750-foot-tall Tower of the Americas, which offers mesmerizing views of the city below and provides a lesson in the history of the six flags that have flown over Texas. This afternoon, we'll take in one of the best-kept secrets in San Antonio—the Institute of Texan Cultures, which highlights the more than 2 dozen cultures that have made Texas what it is—the 15th largest economy in the world.
Wednesday, 27 May 2020: San Antonio Missions; King William Historic District (B,L,D)
This morning we'll explore a few of the San Antonio Missions, which along with the Alamo, were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015. They are walled compounds encompassing a church and buildings where priests and Native Americans lived and worked. We'll begin at the Visitor Center at Mission San José to learn about life here during the 1700s. This afternoon, we'll experience a different era as we head to the King William Historic District on the east bank of the San Antonio River. We'll visit Steves Homestead, an elegant three-story mansion built in 1876 for Edward Steves, founder of the Steves Lumber Company, and take time to walk around this historic neighborhood. In the late 1800s, the King William District was the most elegant residential area in the city. Prominent German merchants originally settled here and brought with them a distinct architectural style. This evening we'll enjoy dinner together.
Thursday, 28 May 2020: Texas Hill Country; Fredericksburg (B,L)
San Antonio is perched on the southern edge of the Texas Hill Country, an area lush, colorful and hilly, unlike much of the pancake-flat state. Hill Country was settled by Germans and Eastern Europeans and has a culture all its own. Storybook farms and ranches dot the countryside, and you may still hear older generations speaking German. We'll begin in charming Fredericksburg, considered Texas' best small town. There will be time to explore the charming downtown before we meet for lunch. After lunch, we'll see how Fredericksburg has become the epicenter of Texas Wine Country by stopping in at one or two of the more than 40 wineries and tasting rooms in the area. We return to San Antonio late this afternoon.
Friday, 29 May 2020: LBJ Library; Free Afternoon; Farewell Dinner (B,D)
If you have never been to a Presidential Library you're in for an interesting morning. We look back in US presidential history with a visit to the Lyndon B. Johnson Library & Museum in Austin. The LBJ Library is one of thirteen presidential libraries administered by the National Archives and houses historical documents and papers from the entire public career of Lyndon Baines Johnson. Learn how the library was planned, the influence of Lady Bird Johnson, the historical significance of the archival collections, and LBJ’s insistence that the history of his times be reflected openly, showing failures as well as successes. We then return to San Antonio to enjoy a Farewell Dinner at a local restaurant and reminisce about our time spent this past week.
Saturday, 30 May 2020: Return Home from San Antonio

What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
In general this time of year, San Antonio has daily highs in the mid-80s with nighttime temperatures in the low 60s.
For This Trip You May Want—
- One smart-casual outfit if you’d like to dress up a bit for dinners.
- Swimsuit—our hotel has a pool
- Lightweight but warm jacket/sweater for the cool mornings and evenings.
- Sunscreen and insect repellant
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping pills, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
Good Packing Habits—
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind – or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
On every WTT tour, our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicles we use and the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings without assistance.
- We strongly recommend you bring only one suitcase plus small shoulder bag/day pack/purse.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
- Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling and provide dates of travel.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
All tips to local guides during your tour have already been paid on your behalf.
- You are responsible for tipping wait-staff, porters or other individuals who provide a service to you at the hotel, or other public locations.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.
