Itinerary
Sunday, 26 April 2020: Arrive New York City; Welcome Dinner (D)
Welcome to New York City! Schedule your flight to arrive into a New York City airport no later than 4:00pm to have time to transfer to the hotel and check-in. La Guardia is the closest airport to downtown Manhattan. Should you arrive earlier in the day, relax or go exploring. The tour begins at 6:00PM in the lobby of the hotel. Our Welcome Meeting will be followed by a Welcome Dinner to get acquainted and discuss our upcoming adventure. Overnight NYC - 6 nights
Monday, 27 April 2020: Times Square & Broadway Walking Tour; Free Time (B)
Manhattan – the Big Apple – home to the world’s most recognizable skyline and the borough most people think of when they picture New York City. Some might even say that Manhattan is the heart and soul of the city, so this is where we focus. Times Square — the area around Broadway from 42nd to 55th Streets — is one of the hottest tickets in town. The spectacle and sparkle draw millions of visitors each year. We'll explore Times Square and Broadway on a walking tour. Afterward, there will be free time to explore. You may want to visit the TKTS booth in Times Square for same-day, discounted Broadway Show tickets. Your Tour Leader will have many suggestions for things to do, or simply join her on her sightseeing itinerary.
Tuesday, 28 April 2020: Lower East Side; Graffiti Tour; Dinner in Chinatown (B,L,D)
The Lower East Side is an eclectic mix of old and new and has long been a melting pot neighborhood. We'll hop the subway to visit The Tenement Museum, a restored tenement building that provides a glimpse into the lives of those who once called these rooms home. The National Park Service estimates that some 7,000 people from more than 20 nations lived here between 1863 and 1935. One of thousands of similar tenements on the Lower East Side, it represents the conditions in which millions of immigrants found themselves when they first came to America. After lunch, we'll embark on a Graffiti Walking Tour that offers an insider's look into the wondrous world of street art where anything and everything serves as a blank canvas. You'll want to grab your camera for this tour! We finish out the day with dinner in Chinatown.
Wednesday, 29 April 2020: Harlem Bus Tour; Gospel Choir Performance; Central Park (B,L)
This morning, we head to Harlem for a bus tour of the community’s historic sights. With its lively cultural tapestry and rich history, Harlem has a fascinating story to tell at every turn. Our tour will take us past some of the neighborhood's most famous landmarks as we travel through Harlem's charming tree-lined streets and historic districts. Capping our tour is the opportunity to hear the soul-lifting sounds of the Harlem Gospel Choir. This afternoon, we’re off to Central Park. We'll never cover all of the 843 acres but we will have time to visit iconic Strawberry Fields across from the Dakota Apartments where John Lennon and Yoko Ono once lived. Strawberry Fields is a living memorial to the world-famous singer, songwriter, member of The Beatles, and peace activist. Its centerpiece is the “Imagine” mosaic. Depending on time, we'll visit other interesting aspects of what is dubbed New York City's backyard. This evening is yours to enjoy as you wish.
Thursday, 30 April 2020: Greenwich Village; Merchant's House Museum; Walk the High Line (B)
Greenwich Village, once the epicenter of the 1960s counterculture movement, is today a hip, tree-lined hub of cafes, clubs and brownstones. At its heart is Washington Square Park, one of New York's most iconic locations, and a great spot for people-watching. Our destination this morning is the Merchant's House Museum to see how the “other half” lived. Built in 1832, this National Historic Landmark building is the city’s only intact family home from the 19th century and its collection of nearly 2,500 items includes period furniture, lighting, fashions and textiles. It’s also reputed to be Manhattan’s most haunted house! We'll gain a better understanding of how the Tredwell family lived on a guided tour of the property. After our tour and time for lunch, join your Tour Leader for a walk north on the High Line, a narrow, linear park built on a former elevated freight railway. The High Line has become a world-renowned inspiration for how cities can transform dilapidated industrial infrastructure in beautiful public spaces.
Friday, 01 May 2020: Brooklyn Bridge; Free Time; Farewell Dinner (B,D)
The Brooklyn Bridge, an icon of New York City for over 125 years, connects Manhattan to Brooklyn. We begin with a walk over this bridge, making plenty of stops to have opportunities to take in the spectacular views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the New York Harbor. Afterward, the day is yours! You might choose to continue exploring Brooklyn and spend time in DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), a neighborhood that was once a scattering of vacant warehouses but is now home to a thriving artist’s colony and a model of a unique urban landscape. Or perhaps head back to Manhattan to visit Museum Mile, home to some of the city's most famous museums. This is also a great time to visit the moving 9/11 Memorial and Museum if you haven't already done so. We will regroup for dinner together this evening.
Saturday, 02 May 2020: Return Home from New York (B)
Sadly, our time together has come to an end. Based on the departure time you provide WTT, your Tour Leader will organize travelers into small groups so you can ride-share to the airport if you wish.
