(C) Peru & Machu Picchu
Including Sacred Valley of the Incas
Peru is an archeological and cultural jewel of Latin America and is home to one of the most famed examples of Inca architecture – Machu Picchu. Believed to have been built in the mid-15th century by Inca Pachucutec, its existence was unknown to the modern world until it was "discovered" in 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham. In addition to Machu Picchu, this trip also includes a visit to Lima, Peru's Capital, The Sacred Valley of the Incas and Cusco, capital of the Inca Dynasty. You won’t want to miss this spectacular trip!

Itinerary
Thursday, 23 April 2020: Arrive Lima, Peru - City of Kings
Schedule your arrival into Lima, Peru at your convenience. As most flights arrive in the evening, there are no scheduled activities for this day. Group transfers from the airport to the hotel will be arranged based on arrival time. Overnight Lima - 2 nights
Friday, 24 April 2020: Lima City Tour; Welcome Lunch; Huaca Pucllana; Free Time (B,L)
Be sure to eat breakfast first thing this morning before meeting in the lobby at 8:30am for our official Welcome Meeting. After making introductions it's off to tour Lima and its historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-classic influences are reflected in a handful of well-preserved buildings that blend past and present. After our Welcome Lunch, we visit Huaca Pucllana, an impressive archaeological site amidst the modern construction of today. The sacred pyramid, made from small handmade bricks, was built by the original inhabitants of Lima in the 5th century. The rest of the day is at leisure.
Saturday, 25 April 2020: Fly to Cusco; Market Visit & Cooking Class; Drive to Sacred Valley (B,L)
This morning after breakfast, we transfer to the airport for our flight to Cusco, the historic capital of the Incan Empire and a city that blends two cultures (Inca and Spanish). Upon landing we'll transfer to the city center and then accompany a local chef to the vibrant San Pedro market for an introduction to local produce such as potatoes, quinoa and maize. Then, we set to work preparing a traditional 2-course lunch in a modern kitchen with individual cooking stations. After we're pleasantly full, we'll depart Cusco for the Sacred Valley, stopping briefly at the impressive Fortress of Sacsayhuaman to marvel at the stone-cutting skills of the Inca. Overnight Sacred Valley - 2 nights
Sunday, 26 April 2020: Sacred Valley of the Incas (B,L)
Today we visit the charming community of Chinchero, renowned for the production of textiles done on backstrap looms, for an overview of the Andean weaving process. Watch as wool is carded, spun and dyed, and learn about the different techniques used to create belts, ponchos and shawls. We then stop at the salt mines of Maras for a photo op. Salt has been extracted here since the time of the Incas and the same method is still in use today. It's then on to Moray, where the circular terraces hidden among the hills are akin to a Greek amphitheater. Surrounded by an impressive backdrop of snow-covered mountains, Moray was used by the Incas as an open-air agricultural lab for adapting crops to different environmental conditions. We spend the afternoon in Ollantaytambo and visit the fortress dominated by two massive Incan ruins - the Temple of the Sun and the Terrace of the Ten Niches. Learn about the importance of this site, and climb the ruins if you are so inclined.
Monday, 27 April 2020: Travel by Train & Bus to Machu Picchu; Group Lunch and Dinner (B,L,D)
After packing a small overnight bag, we depart by train through the Sacred Valley up to Aguas Calientes where we'll board a small bus that winds up the steep road to the entrance of the citadel Machu Picchu, one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. For centuries, Machu Picchu remained undiscovered by the Spaniards and unknown to the outside world until American historian Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention in 1911. On a guided tour, we will experience the uniqueness of the location and the genius that went into its construction. Overnight Aguas Calientes - 2 nights
Tuesday, 28 April 2020: Free Day in Aguas Calientes; Dinner at Hotel (B,D)
After breakfast, the remainder of the day is free. For those interested in returning to Machu Picchu (additional cost), be sure to select that option on the Space Reservation form. Please note that if you are interested in hiking Huayna Picchu, the towering mountain that serves as the backdrop in almost every photo of Machu Picchu, you must arrange and purchase that in advance as there are limited slots available. You can also hike to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) or the Inka Bridge, or simply roam around the ruins, taking in the tranquility of the site. For those who do not wish to return to Machu Picchu, our hotel is a lovely place to spend the day.
Wednesday, 29 April 2020: Return to Sacred Valley by Train; Pisaq Market; Weaver's Palace (B)
Today we return to the Sacred Valley by train and are met by our guide and driver for the trip back to Cusco. Our first stop is Pisac to explore its vibrant market. Originally a place where people from remote communities bartered their wares, Pisaq has evolved to one of South America's most famous souvenir markets. There will be time here for lunch on your own. Be sure to sample the empanadas baked in traditional clay ovens. Our next stop is Awana Kancha (Weaver's Palace), a breeding center of South American camelids (guanacos, llamas, alpacas and vicunas). We continue on to Cusco and check into our hotel where the evening is at your leisure. Overnight Cusco - 2 nights
Thursday, 30 April 2020: Cusco Walking Tour; Afternoon at Leisure; Group Dinner (B,D)
This morning, we enjoy a guided walk through Cusco's major sites. We'll walk up a cobblestone street to the traditional artist's quarter of San Blas. Many of the best craftsmen have their workshops and small galleries here. We'll stop in at the San Blas' church, which houses an imposing pulpit considered one of New World's finest woodcarvings. We'll walk Triunfo Street to Hatunrumiyoc and see its famous twelve-sided stone. After our walking tour concludes, there will be plenty of time to enjoy at your leisure. We'll gather for dinner together and reminisce about our wonderful week.
Friday, 01 May 2020: Return Flight to Lima; Return Home (B,L)
After breakfast, we transfer to the airport for the short flight back to Lima. Once we arrive, we'll be met by our guide and transfer to the Larco Herrera Museum to enjoy a Farewell Lunch and have time to explore the museum. The museum's galleries give context and understanding to 3,000 years of Peruvian pre-Columbian history. Its masterpieces are considered worldwide icons of pre-Columbian art and have been displayed in museums worldwide. The museum itself is also an attraction, since the colonial mansion housing the exhibitions was built on top of a pre-Inca pyramid from the 7th century. At the conclusion of our museum tour we return to the airport as a group. Make your return flight no earlier than 7:00pm.

How Active is this Tour?
Because of this requirement, WTT tours are not suitable for anyone who is physically challenged, walking impaired, or is a slow walker that cannot keep up with the pace of the group.
Due to the remoteness and lack of infrastructure, this tour is more demanding than a typical WTT tour. The altitude combined with uneven terrain and many steps can make for more difficult walking. If you are in average physical shape, you should have minimal issues.
The activities on this tour are rated as follows:
- 25% Easy
- 50% Moderate (extensive walking)
- 25% Strenuous (altitude)
If you are in doubt as to your ability to meet the physical activity requirements, you should not sign up for this trip.
Read more about Activity Levels

- Breakfast daily
- 5 Lunches
- 3 Dinners (a combination of meals at hotels and restaurants)
Selections for the included lunches and dinners will highlight the local cuisine. NOTE: There will be limited availability to meet dietary restrictions on this tour due to traveling in remote areas where food choices are not as diverse.
What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
Temperatures will likely vary with daytime temperatures in the 70s in Lima and Cusco, dropping to the 40s at night at the higher elevations.
For This Trip You'll Need—
- Small, soft-sided overnight bag for our 2 nights at Machu Picchu
- Sunblock, sunglasses, hat & insect repellent
- Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots with good tread
- Reusable water bottle
You May Also Want—
- Altitude Sickness Medication. Local remedies can be also be purchased once in Peru.
- Small flashlight for lighting pathways when walking at night.
- Swimsuit - there are spas at several of the hotels.
- Lightweight, but warm, fleece jacket or sweater for cool mornings and evenings.
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping pills, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
Good Packing Habits—
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind – or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
On every WTT tour, our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicles we use, the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings without assistance and the restrictions imposed by other forms of transportation such as trains and small planes.
- It is best to travel as lightly as possible. Most travelers regret when they have packed too much.
- We strongly recommend you bring only one suitcase no larger than 24 - 26 inches high as measured from the FLOOR to the top of the retracted handle, plus 1 carry-on. The medium-size in a 3-piece luggage set easily meets this requirement.
- Peru Rail restricts the luggage allowed on the train to Machu Picchu. Travelers are allowed only one small carry-on, weighing no more than 11 pounds and with a total linear dimension of 62-inches. This restriction ensures emergency exits on trains do not become blocked with luggage. Therefore, you will need to pack a small carry-on for the 2-night stay in Aguas Calientes. Your larger bag will remain at the Sacred Valley hotel and we will pick it up on our return to Cusco.
- If you carry a purse, it should be able to be worn across your body, hands-free.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings. We expect you to take your belongings from the coach to your room and to bring it back to the coach or train on days we change hotels. We do not provide luggage pulls; they are not safe and are inconvenient.
What are the health recommendations for this tour?
- The standards for health and hygiene in the larger cities and tourist areas are relatively high. However, travelers should drink only bottled water, which is widely available. Do not drink tap water, even in major hotels, and avoid drinks with ice.
- Altitude sickness strikes randomly, though this tour poses minimal risk for a healthy person. Symptoms include headache, shortness of breath and general lethargy. Take time to acclimatize, especially in Andean cities like Cusco (Elev. 11,023ft). Avoid alcohol and physical efforts during the first few days and drink plenty of water. Altitude sickness is readily counteracted by inhaling oxygen and most hotels offer oxygen in bottles that can be purchased.
- While there are no specific vaccine requirements for visiting Peru, you should be up-to-date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides additional guidance at www.cdc.gov. Please discuss any vaccine or health concerns with your healthcare provider.
What are the phone and internet recommendations for this tour?
Only you can determine your need to stay in contact while traveling. Internet access is available in most hotels, sometimes for a fee.
- If you are bringing a cell phone, contact your cell phone service provider before departing about adding international calling and/or texting features. Texting internationally is often less expensive than placing a cell phone call.
- Learn how to make an international call BEFORE you leave. Consult your cell provider and check out the web site www.HowtoCallAbroad.com.
What are the electricity requirements for this tour?
You may need to purchase an adapter. To determine the electric plug configuration needed for your destination, refer to http://www.iec.ch/worldplugs/list_bylocation.html. A universal adapter supports a wide variety of sockets/plugs. You should also check your electronic devices for voltage compatibility. Many countries operate on 220V or 230V, which differs from most of North America. Most of today's electronics (laptops, phone chargers etc.) are multi-voltage and will work worldwide automatically, without a transformer. Consult your owner's manual for further details.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
Only you can determine the optimum amount of cash to take on tour. When budgeting for out-of-pocket expenses, there are several aspects to consider: the number of meals you are responsible for, the amount of money you like to have on-hand for snacks and drinks, any tipping you'd like to do, and your individual shopping interests and habits.
- Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling and provide dates of travel.
- Peru's official currency is the Nuevo Sol.
- US dollars are often accepted in many tourist locations, however, the bills must be in perfect condition with no tears or wrinkles. You may want to ask your bank for new bills before you depart.
- Peru is very much a cash-based society, and this is particularly true in the smaller communities.
- Credit cards are typically accepted in the larger cities. Note that many banks assess a 1% to 3% transaction fee on all charges you incur abroad.
- Banks are no longer the place of choice in Peru for exchanging money: lines are long and rates are often lower than at ‘casas de cambio’ (exchange houses). ‘Cambistas’ (money-changers) are legal in Peru and often wear coloured jackets with “$” insignias and photo checks, and can be found on the street. They offer current rates of exchange, but count your money carefully and make sure you have not received any counterfeit bills. We recommend bringing USD cash for the first days.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
All tips to local guides during your tour have already been paid on your behalf.
- You are responsible for tipping wait-staff, porters, or other individuals who provide a service to you at the hotel, or other public locations.
- A tip in Peru is given to reward good service. Tip porters in hotels and airports about 1 USD for 1 or 2 luggage pieces. A 5-10% tip is sufficient in most restaurants unless the service has been exceptional. There is no need to tip taxi drivers as fares are negotiated before departure.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $7-$10 per day.
What other Additional Information do I need to know?
- Travelers are required to have a valid passport. Most countries require your passport to be valid a minimum of six months after your return home date, and have at least two consecutive blank pages.
- There is limited ability to meet dietary restrictions on this tour due to traveling in remote areas where food choices are not as diverse.
