Saturday, 21 March 2020: Bangkok City Tour; Flower Market; Evening Cultural Show (B,D)
We begin our tour at Wat Pho to see the massive gold-plated Reclining Buddha and observe a monk during his chanting. Then it's off to the dazzling Grand Palace, the city's most famous landmark and a "must see" for every visitor to Bangkok. Within the compound are several impressive buildings including the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew), which houses the small, very famous and greatly revered Emerald Buddha. We'll also visit the largest flower market in the city and stop in at Wat Trimirt, home to the 5-1/2-ton Golden Buddha. This evening we are in for a treat as we take in a Siam Niramit performance, often described as the "must see" show of Thailand. This colorful spectacle is performed on a gigantic stage and takes you on a journey thorough the myths, festivals and history of Siam and Thailand.
Sunday, 22 March 2020: Floating Market; Canal Boat Ride; Thai Massage (B,L)
We travel outside of Bangkok today to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market with its many colors, flavors, and exotic fragrances. We board a narrow long-tail speedboat for a scenic ride, before transferring to a man-powered sampan boat where we pass riverside villages and fruit plantations before entering the vibrant floating market. After lunch at a local restaurant, we head to a massage school to enjoy a 60-minute authentic Thai massage. After our relaxing massage, we'll transfer back to the hotel and the remainder of the late afternoon and evening is on your own.
Monday, 23 March 2020: Ayutthaya Tour; River Cruise (B,L)
Today's excursion is to to Ayutthaya, the ancient Siamese capital, which is home to some of Thailand's most important historical landmarks and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The magnitude and number of the ancient temple ruins speaks of the former greatness of the city. We will visit some of the most interesting temples, including Bang-Pa-In, the summer palace of King Rama V. We return by boat to Bangkok via the Chao Phraya River, enjoying lunch onboard. We arrive back at our hotel late afternoon.
Tuesday, 24 March 2020: Fly to Chiang Mai; Sunset Views from Wat Doi Suthep (B)
We fly to Chiang Mai today. Upon arrival, we meet our guide and transfer to the hotel. Later this afternoon, we depart for the sunset views at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the "Temple on the Mountain," and the most sacred temple in Northern Thailand. According to legend, the temple was built to hold a bone fragment from the Buddha’s shoulder. One of those bones was mounted on a sacred white elephant (an important symbol in Thailand) who then climbed Doi Suthep mountain and stopped near the peak. After trumpeting three times, the elephant laid down and gently passed away in the jungle. Overnight Chiang Mai - 2 nights
Wednesday, 25 March 2020: Elephant Nature Sanctuary; Hill Tribe Villages (B,L)
This morning we drive through the picturesque countryside to visit the Elephant Nature Park, a sanctuary for elephants, buffalo, and many other rescued animals. Here we will learn the stories of rescued and orphaned elephants and have the opportunity to feed these gentle giants from a viewing platform. Later this afternoon, we take an unforgettable excursion to the hill tribe villages of Chiang Mail to meet the people of the Palong, Padong, and Karen tribes who live peacefully as small farmers, observing traditional ways of life. They'll share their crafts and traditions, and we'll even get to try on the traditional neck rings worm by members of the Karen tribe!
Thursday, 26 March 2020: Fly to Siem Reap, Cambodia (B)
We depart Thailand today and fly to Cambodia. Siem Reap is widely renowned as the gateway to Angkor Wat, the millennium-old temple ruins of the Khmer Empire. Overnight Siem Reap - 3 nights
Friday, 27 March 2020: Angkor Wat; Angkor Thom; Cambodian Village (B)
The crown jewel of Khmer architecture, Angkor Wat is the national symbol and the highlight of any visit to Cambodia. The largest, best preserved, and most religiously significant of the Angkor temples, Angkor impresses visitors both by its sheer scale and beautifully proportioned layout, as well as the delicate artistry of its carvings. As we ascend through a series of galleries and courtyards to the central sanctuary, we will view intricate stone carvings that adorn nearly every surface of the temple. Along the outer gallery walls runs the longest continuous bas-relief in the world, which narrates stories from Hindu mythology. Today we will also visit the fortified city of Angkor Thom, enclosed by a wall and wide moats, to see the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper Kings. At some point today, we will have a chance to visit a typical Cambodian village, mingle with the villagers, visit a local school and peek into a Buddhist temple.
Saturday, 28 March 2020: Banteay Samre; Ta Prohm Temple; Aspara Dance Performance (B,D)
We begin today with a visit to Banteay Samre, a mid-12th century temple dedicated to the god Vishnu, one of the principal gods in the Hindu religion. We then explore Ta Prohm Temple, one of the most popular attractions in Angkor as much of the jungle has yet to be cleared and so it still looks very much like most of the Angkor monuments would have appeared when European explorers first stumbled upon them. Tonight, we will be transferred by tuk tuk to enjoy a buffet dinner of classic Khmer cuisine and take in an Apsara dance performance showcasing the traditional culture of Cambodia.

What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
In general the average temperature during the day will likely be in the mid to upper 90s with lows in the mid 70s.
For This Trip You Will Need—
- Lightweight and breathable clothing to beat the heat and humidity; humidity levels often range from 50-70%.
- Modest clothing that covers your shoulders and legs for visiting temples
- Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen
- Insect repellent, hand sanitizer, and disinfecting wipes
- Swimsuit - all hotels have a pool.
- Sturdy and comfortable sandals - you will need to remove your shoes before entering most temples.
- Lightweight jacket/sweater as indoor spaces and flights can be cool from air conditioning
- Smart-casual wear if you'd like to dress up a bit for dinners.
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping pills, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
Good Packing Habits—
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
On every WTT tour, our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicles we use, the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings without assistance and the restrictions imposed by other forms of transportation such as smaller planes.
- It is best to travel as lightly as possible. Most travelers regret when they have packed too much.
- We strongly recommend you bring only one suitcase no larger than 26 inches high as measured from the FLOOR to the top of the retracted handle, plus 1 carry-on. The medium-size in a 3-piece luggage set easily meets this requirement and should be plenty roomy for this length of trip.
- There are luggage weight restrictions on the flights, in-trip. You can bring 1 checked bag with a maximum weight of 44 pounds. You are allowed one small personal item and 1 carry-on bag with a maximum weight of 11 pounds. You are responsible for any extra fees incurred for overages.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings. We expect you to take your belongings from the coach to your room and to bring it back to the coach on days we change hotels. We do not provide luggage pulls; they are not safe and are inconvenient. Steps exist at most hotel entrances. On occasion the coach must unload passengers and luggage some distance from the hotel entrance.
- Keep in mind that you will be traversing airports as part of this itinerary and will need to handle your own luggage through customs. You will need to pay any and all charges you may incur by the airlines from overweight luggage.
What are the health recommendations for this tour?
The standards for health and hygiene in Thailand and Cambodia are generally good; however, you should avoid ice and tap water, and should only drink bottled water. Consider brushing your teeth with bottled water as well. When eating fruits and vegetables, wash them in clean water or peel them yourself.
While there are no specific vaccine requirements for Thailand and Cambodia, you should be up-to-date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides additional guidance at www.cdc.gov. Please discuss any vaccine or health concerns with your healthcare provider.
An Open Letter from Dr. James Robb regarding the Corona Virus
"Dear Colleagues, as some of you may recall, when I was a professor of pathology at the University of California San Diego, I was one of the first molecular virologists in the world to work on coronaviruses.
Here is what I have done and the precautions that I take and will take. These are the same precautions I currently use during our influenza seasons, except for the mask and gloves:
1) No handshaking. Use a fist bump, slight bow, elbow bump, etc.
2) Use onlyyour knuckle to touch light switches. elevator buttons, etc. Lift the gasoline dispenser with a paper towel or use a disposable glove.
3) Open doors with your closed fist or hip - do not grasp the handle with your hand, unless there is no other way to open the door. Especially important on bathroom and post office/commercial doors.
4) Use disinfectant wipes at the stores when they are available, including wiping the handle and child seat in grocery carts.
5) Wash your hands with soap for 10-20 seconds and/or use a greater than 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer whenever you return home from ANY activity that involves locations where other people have been.
6) Keep a bottle of sanitizer available at each of your home's entrances. AND in your car for use after getting gas or touching other contaminated objects when you can't immediately wash your hands.
7) If possible, cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue and discard. Use your elbow only if you have to. The clothing on your elbow will contain infectious virus that can be passed on for up to a week or more!"
An Open Letter from Dr. James Robb regarding the Corona Virus, continued.
"Items to consider purchasing:
1) Latex or nitrile latex disposable gloves for use when going shopping and all other outside activity when you [might] come in contact with contaminated areas.
Note: This virus is spread in large droplets by coughing and sneezing. This means that the air will not infect you! But all the surfaces where these droplets land are infectious. The only way for the virus to infect you is through your nose or mouth via your hands or an infected cough or sneeze onto or into your nose or mouth.
2) Disposable surgical masks [or other barriers] to prevent you from touching your nose and/or mouth (We touch our nose/mouth 90X/day without knowing it!). This is the only way this virus can infect you - it is lung-specific. The mask [or other barriers] will not prevent the virus in a direct sneeze from getting into your nose or mouth - it is only to keep you from touching your nose or mouth.
3) Hand sanitizers must be alcohol-based and greater than 60% alcohol to be effective.
4) Zinc lozenges. These lozenges have been proven to be effective in blocking coronavirus (and most other viruses) from multiplying in your throat and nasopharynx. Use as directed several times each day when you begin to feel ANY "cold-like" symptoms beginning. It is best to lie down and let the lozenge dissolve in the back of your throat and nasopharynx. Cold-Eeze lozenges is one brand available, but there are other brands available.
I hope these personal thoughts will be helpful.
James Robb, MD FCAP"
What are the phone and internet recommendations for this tour?
Only you can determine your need to stay in contact while traveling. WiFi access is available in most hotels, sometimes for a fee.
- If you are bringing a cell phone, contact your cell phone service provider before departing about adding international calling and/or texting features. Texting internationally is often less expensive than placing a cell phone call.
- Learn how to make an international call BEFORE you leave. Consult your cell provider and check out the web site www.HowtoCallAbroad.com.
What are the electricity requirements for this tour?
You may need to purchase an adapter. A universal adaptor supports a wide variety of sockets/plugs. You should also check your electronic devices for voltage compatibility. Many countries, including Thailand and Cambodia, operate on 220V or 230V, which differs from most of North America. Most of today's electronics (laptops, phone chargers etc.) are multi-voltage and will work worldwide automatically, without a transformer. Consult your owner's manual for further details.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
Only you can determine the optimum amount of cash to take on tour. When budgeting for out-of-pocket expenses, there are several aspects to consider: the number of meals you are responsible for, the amount of money you like to have on-hand for snacks and drinks, and your individual shopping interests and habits.
- Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling. Many banks charge a currency exchange fee (anywhere from 3%-10%) on most transactions. Check with your bank. There are credit cards that impose no foreign transaction fees.
- Thailand's official currency is the Thai Baht (THB).
- Cambodia's official currency is the Cambodian Riel (KHR), but tourist areas widely accept US Dollars. Bring crisp notes without tears and in smaller denominations. US coins are not accepted, and small change is given in Riel.
- Debit cards can be useful for cash advances. ATMs are typically the best way of obtaining cash as they are found in most airports and tourist areas. However, there are no guarantees your credit or debit cards will actually work overseas. Some foreign countries limit the amount that can be withdrawn daily. You must know your PIN number for your debit card to use ATMs. Always use caution when withdrawing money.
- In Thailand, many hotels, large-scale restaurants and shops will accept credit cards. If you plan on making purchases at markets or eating on the street, be sure to have cash on hand.
- Cambodia is a cash-based society. Hotels and large restaurants are likely to accept most credit cards, but otherwise, expect to pay in cash.
- Do not rely on credit or debit cards as your only source of money.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
All tips to local guides during your tour have already been paid on your behalf.
- Tipping in Thailand and Cambodia is generally not expected but is welcomed and appreciated should you receive good service.
- In Thailand, tipping expectations tend to be more common in sit-down restaurants and larger hotels. In restaurants, tips of about 10% are generally given for good service, unless a service charge has already been added to the bill.
- When taking a taxi or tuk-tuk, agree on a price in advance or confirm it is a metered fare. For taxis, it's common to round up to the nearest bill and leave the change as a tip.
- You are responsible for tipping wait-staff, porters, or other individuals who provide a service to you at the hotel, or other public locations.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.
What other Additional Information do I need to know?
- Travelers are required to have a valid passport.
- Most countries require your passport to be valid a minimum of six months after your return home date, and have at least two consecutive blank pages.
- US citizens do not require a visa for Thailand.
- US Citizens entering Cambodia need a Cambodian visa. Cambodia offers online visa processing.
- WTT will provide visa instructions shortly after Final Payment is collected and all traveler information has been collected.
