Itinerary
Wednesday, 04 December 2019: Arrive Norfolk Airport; Welcome Dinner (D)
Schedule your flight to arrive into Norfolk Airport no later than 3:00pm. Once everyone has arrived, we will depart for Williamsburg as a group. Travel time is approximately one hour. We will check in and then gather in the lobby for a orientation meeting before departing for dinner at a local restaurant to get better acquainted. Overnight Williamsburg - 5 nights
Thursday, 05 December 2019: Day Trip to Nearby Plantation Homes (B,L)
The James River plantations near Williamsburg are among the oldest homes in America, and many of them are open to the public. As witnesses to more than four centuries of American history, a variety of influential people have called these Virginia plantations home—including signers of the Declaration of Independence and several United States presidents. Today, we take a plantation tour to learn more about the stately architecture, lovely furnishings and beautiful gardens.
Friday, 06 December 2019: Williamsburg Orientation Tour; Free Afternoon; Group Dinner (B,D)
Williamsburg is the world's largest living history museum and brings history to life. We begin our exploration with a walking tour of the historic area which will help us discover the way the inhabitants of the capital of Virginia lived during the 18th century. After the tour, there will be time to explore more than 30 reconstructions of colonial houses, governmental buildings and craftsmen workshops on your own. When you enter into the homes and gardens of Williamsburg’s 18th-century residents, you hear firsthand perspectives from the re-enactors. We'll regroup for dinner together this evening.
Saturday, 07 December 2019: Day Trip to Historic Jamestown; Yorktown, VA (B,L)
Today we embark on a daylong journey through Virginia’s “Historic Triangle" to rediscover early colonial society. We'll visit Jamestown, which in 1607 became the first successful British outpost, and look out over the James River from a 17th-century church to imagine the settlers from the first permanent English colony. And just a few miles away is Yorktown, which saw the end of British rule in 1781. At Yorktown's Surrender Field, we'll feel the excitement of the victorious American and French forces as the defeated British turned over their arms, ending the American Revolution. We return to Williamsburg late this afternoon.
Sunday, 08 December 2019: Free Morning; Farewell Brunch; Grand Illumination Celebration (B,L)
A free morning in Williamsburg gives you the opportunity to see and do whatever you like. What fun to leisurely walk around and talk with interpreters and craftsmen in period dress living the 18th-century lifestyle. We will get together in early afternoon for our Farewell Brunch and then head off to see the Grand Illumination activities. Throughout the afternoon, we'll get into the holiday spirit as reenactors make history come to life for the holidays. We'll explore the historical and cultural significance of Christmas in the 18th and 19th centuries and find out how music, traditions, festivities and food have evolved from early America to what we know and love at Christmastime today.
Monday, 09 December 2019: Return Home from Norfolk, VA (B)
Sadly, our time together has come to an end. We depart Williamsburg as a group to return to the Norfolk airport. Schedule your departure flight no earlier than 11 am.

What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
In general this time of year, the average temperature during the day is in the low 50s, dropping to the mid-30s at night. Rain showers are a possibility. Some activities and the Grand Illumination will be outside, so remember to dress in warm layers.
For This Trip You Will Need—
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Warm clothing that layers
For This Trip You May Want—
- Warm winter coat
- Gloves, scarf, hat and sunglasses
- Thermal layers if you want extra warmth
- Inexpensive rain poncho or rain jacket, just in case
- Smart-casual wear if you’d like to dress up a bit for dinners.
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping pills, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
Good Packing Habits—
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
On every WTT tour, our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicles we use and the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings without assistance.
- It is best to travel as lightly as possible. Most travelers regret when they have packed too much.
- You may bring one suitcase plus small shoulder bag/day pack/purse.
- Maximum suitcase size: 25-inches in height as measured from the FLOOR to the top of the retracted handle. The small case in a 3-piece luggage set easily meets this requirement and should be plenty roomy for this length of trip.
- Suitcases larger than 25" in height will not fit in the WTT coach; don't bring them.
- The maximum weight of your suitcase should not exceed 30 pounds, as you will need to lift it into the coach luggage compartment.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings. We expect you to take your belongings from the coach to your room and to bring it back to the coach and load it on days we change hotels. We do not provide luggage pulls; they are not safe and are inconvenient. The possibility of steps exist at most hotel entrances.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
Only you can determine the optimum amount of cash to take on tour. When budgeting for out-of-pocket expenses, there are several aspects to consider: the number of meals you are responsible for, the amount of money you like to have on-hand for snacks and drinks, and your individual shopping interests and habits.
- Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling and provide dates of travel.
- Debit cards can be useful for cash advances. ATMs are typically the best way of obtaining cash as they are found in most airports and big cities and tourist areas.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
All tips to local guides during your tour have already been paid on your behalf.
- You are responsible for tipping wait-staff, porters, or other individuals who provide a service to you at the hotel, or other public locations.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.
What other Additional Information do I need to know?
- This tour uses a 15-passenger Mini-Coach for transportation while on tour. Learn more about The WTT North American Travel Experience by downloading/opening the pdf.
