Mount Rushmore & Crazy Horse
Including a Buffalo Photo Safari
Mount Rushmore is something many of us would like to see, but let's face it...it's in the middle of nowhere. The challenge was to create an interesting tour that included Mount Rushmore and more. Now that we have been here many times we know there is so much to see and do…a truly amazing and unique landscape that’s not to be missed. Our tour includes Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial (another mountain carving still in the making), Wind Cave National Park, Badlands National Park, and a visit to a prehistoric Mammoth dig site. We'll take a buffalo jeep safari where we travel off-road in a protected state park to get up close to buffalo. This trip is a slice of Americana that is so deserving to see. With WTT, now you can!

Itinerary
Monday, 16 September 2019: Arrive Rapid City, South Dakota; Welcome Dinner (D)
Schedule your arrival into Rapid City no later than 4:00pm to allow enough time to get to the hotel and check in. Should you arrive earlier in the day, go exploring or simply relax. The tour begins at 6:00pm in the lobby where we'll make introductions and then depart for our Welcome Dinner to get better acquainted. Overnight Rapid City - 1 night
Tuesday, 17 September 2019: Badlands National Park (B)
Today begins with a drive to Badlands National Park. The park consists of nearly 244,000 acres of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles and spires blended with the largest protected mixed-grass prairie in the United States. We begin with an overview at the visitor center. A drive along the Badlands Loop Road features spectacular scenery. Bring your binoculars! You may spy bison or pronghorn antelope grazing, spot a coyote stalking rodents, or perhaps catch a glimpse of bighorn sheep. Overnight Custer - 4 nights
Wednesday, 18 September 2019: Mount Rushmore & Crazy Horse Memorial (B)
We begin today at Mt. Rushmore National Memorial which immortalizes the faces of the four presidents carved on its facade. It is a project of colossal proportion, ambition and achievement. Spend time at the Visitor Center and Museum, then see whether there are any interesting ranger-led activities. You can also walk the first quarter-mile of the Presidential Trail to the base of of the mountain. This afternoon we back track to Crazy Horse Memorial, home to the world’s largest mountain sculpture. It is still a work in progress. Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski began the project in 1948 at the request of Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear to honor the culture, tradition and living heritage of Native Americans. This evening we're in for a treat as we attend the evening multi-media laser-light show that turns the mountainside into a gigantic screen for the spectacular display.
Thursday, 19 September 2019: Wind Cave National Park; Mammoth Dig Site (B,D)
Our first stop of the day is Wind Cave, one of the world's longest and most complex caves. We start at the Visitor Center and then take a relatively easy 1-hour tour of the cave. The tour enters and leaves the cave by elevator with 150 steps along the route. Examples of beautiful cave formations—boxwork, cave popcorn, and flowstone—are seen along the quarter-mile trail. Upon conclusion of the tour, we'll head to Hot Springs, where the hunt is on for a Woolly Mammoth. Actually it's a visit to an excavation site with a remarkable concentration of 51 mammoth skeletons. After a short guided tour, we can stroll the sidewalks of the dig area, explore the many exhibits in the Ice Age Exhibit Hall and peek in the windows of a working paleontology laboratory. Late this afternoon, we'll return to Custer and enjoy dinner together.
Friday, 20 September 2019: Custer State Park & Buffalo Jeep Photo Safari (B,L)
Custer State Park encompasses 71,000 acres of spectacular terrain and features an abundance of wildlife. It is home to the world's largest free-roaming buffalo herd. Our destination this morning is State Game Lodge where we'll enjoy a Buffalo Jeep Safari Photo Tour. Afterward, we'll head to Sylvan Lake Lodge and enjoy a picnic lunch and a leisurely walk to the scenic lake.
Saturday, 21 September 2019: Return to Rapid City; Afternoon Free Time; Farewell Dinner (B,D)
We return to Rapid City with stops along the way to enjoy the scenery. The afternoon is free and we will get together for our Farewell Dinner tonight. Overnight Rapid City - 1 night
Sunday, 22 September 2019: Return Home (B)
Sadly, our time together has come to an end. Based on the departure time you provide WTT, your Tour Leader will organize travelers into small groups so you can ride-share to the airport if you wish.

What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
For This Trip You Will Need—
- Jacket or sweater for the cool confines of Wind Cave National Park
- Walking shoes with non-slip soles for touring the Wind Cave.
You May Also Want—
- Swimsuit
- Reusable water bottle
- One smart-casual outfit if you’d like to dress up a bit for dinners.
- Raincoat or travel umbrella for the occasional scattered showers in the region.
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping pills, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
Good Packing Habits—
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind – or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
On every WTT tour, our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicles we use and the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings without assistance.
- It is best to travel as lightly as possible. Most travelers regret when they have packed too much.
- You may bring one suitcase plus small shoulder bag/day pack/purse.
- Maximum suitcase size: 25-inches in height as measured from the FLOOR to the top of the retracted handle. The small case in a 3-piece luggage set easily meets this requirement and should be plenty roomy for this length of trip.
- Suitcases larger than 25" in height will not fit in the WTT coach; don't bring them.
- The maximum weight of your suitcase should not exceed 30 pounds, as you will need to lift it into the coach luggage compartment.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings. We expect you to take your belongings from the coach to your room and to bring it back to the coach and load it on days we change hotels. We do not provide luggage pulls; they are not safe and are inconvenient. The possibility of steps exist at most hotel entrances.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
- Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling and provide dates of travel.
- ATMs are typically the best way of obtaining cash; they are found in most towns and cities. You must know your PIN number for your debit and credit cards in order to use the ATMs.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
All tips to local guides during your tour have already been paid on your behalf.
- You are responsible for tipping wait-staff, porters, or other individuals who provide a service to you at the hotel, or other public locations.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.
