Kayaking the Green River
Through Utah's Canyonlands
The Green River flows through one of the most scenic canyons on earth, where white, yellow, brown and red-hued walls play off the surreal green water. This kayak trip combines the stunning scenery of Utah's Canyonlands with a gentle current allowing women both new to kayaking and those who have kayaked before an equally enjoyable experience. Each day we'll stop to swim, hike and eat lunch. In late afternoon we beach our kayaks on sandy stretches to relax and sleep under a blanket of stars. No kayaking experience necessary! As a bonus, sign up for WTT's Early Arrival package to see nearby Arches National Park!

Itinerary
Monday, 09 September 2019: Arrive Moab; Kayak Orientation; Welcome Dinner (D)
Arrive Moab no later than 4:00pm. Should you arrive earlier in the day, go exploring with other travelers or just relax. We have a kayaking orientation meeting at 5:00pm. Following the orientation we’ll have our Welcome Meeting and dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight Moab - 1 night
Tuesday, 10 September 2019: Travel from Moab to the Green River (L,D)
Off we go to the "put-in" point of our trip. Here we will get into our kayaks and become comfortable with them before we head down the river. Don't worry. Ten minutes and a little instruction on the proper way to paddle and you're practically a pro! We'll stop as the flow of the river allows to rest along sandy beaches, grab a healthy snack and enjoy lunch. We set up camp each night, typically on sandy beaches along the riverbank. You can simply roll out a sleeping bag and sleep under the stars or help pitch a two-person tent if you wish. All camping gear is provided. Overnight Camping - 4 nights
Wednesday, 11 September 2019: Kayaking the Green River (B,L,D)
Wake up to the smell of coffee and the sound of the river babbling. After packing up we are back on the river for another day of beautiful sights and good conversation. No hurry here as we soak up the good company and the warm temperatures. September temperatures range between 70-80 degrees, just warm enough to make the water feel refreshing when we stop for a swim.
Thursday, 12 September 2019: Kayaking the Green River (B,L,D)
Each day will be similar...but not. Fresh scenery awaits around every bend. Each day you'll paddle alongside a new friend. Animals may come to the river to drink, and you may see evidence of Native Americans who left pictographs on the canyon walls.
Friday, 13 September 2019: Kayaking the Green River (B,L,D)
Activities will be adapted to the flow of the river and the group members' abilities and interests. Those with the energy to roam far and climb high can do so during stops we will make, while those who want a more leisurely experience can simply relax riverside.
Saturday, 14 September 2019: Kayaking the Green River; Farewell Dinner (B,D)

What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
In general this time of year, the average temperature during the day will likely be in the 80s, dropping to the 50s at night. Although you’ll be traveling to a desert environment, be prepared for various weather conditions. Weather in this part of the country can be unpredictable. Rain is always a possibility.
ALL camping gear is supplied by the expedition company; just pack your personal gear.
Good Packing Habits—
- For any outdoor adventure, it is important to bring the right gear. Some say there is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing.
- Pack as little as possible; whatever you bring travels in your kayak.
For the Trip You Will Need—
- Quick-drying, durable, comfortable clothing that layers easily. Anything you bring on the river will get wet and sandy.
- Windbreaker that repels water
- Swimsuit, preferably two-piece.
- Sport sandals with good traction, such as Keens, Tevas or Chacos
- Two refillable water bottles (preferably with a carabiner to clip to a bag)
- Long-sleeve cotton shirt for sun protection
- Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent and lip balm
- Small flashlight
- Small container of bio-degradable soap (sold at sports/outdoor stores)
- Comfortable t-shirts and yoga pants or sweats to wear in camp
- Fleece or sweatshirt and sweatpants for cool mornings
You May Also Want—
- Nylon bath "scrubbie" packed in a Zip-loc bag
- Extra swimsuit
- Hand towel and beach towel
- Travel-sized pillow
- Rain gear (jacket and pants) or poncho
- Flip-flops for wearing around camp only
- Personal water hydration backpack, such as CamelBak or Platypus, instead of water bottles
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, sleeping aids, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
Packing Dry Bags
At the kayaking orientation meeting, you will receive 2 dry bags for individual use.
Personal Dry Bag—
This bag is for the things you only need while in camp. Think of it as your checked luggage at the airport. Once packed, it will be strapped down for the day. The bag is approximately 20″x 20″x 27″. Pack belongings in a duffel bag, which you then put inside your dry bag. This makes for easier corralling of your personal items. Your personal dry bag is likely to include: (provided) sleeping bag, changes of clothing and personal toiletries.
Ditty Bag—
This smaller bag is intended to carry all those little things you would like to have with you during the day on the river. This bag is like your purse. It is carried on the kayak by your side so you can access it anytime. Items for your ditty bag might include: camera, medications, sun-block, lip balm, hat, etc. Although these bags are water resistant, we advise using Ziploc bags as an extra measure of caution to protect items that shouldn't get wet.
Calls of Nature
We pee in the river, downstream from camp, and we bathe in the river, upstream from camp. A latrine is set up each evening at camp for solid waste only. Your body will quickly adjust to the rhythm of the trip.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
On every WTT tour, our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of our transportation and the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own luggage.
- We STRONGLY RECOMMEND you bring a duffle/gym bag (pack it empty in your suitcase) to contain your things while on the river. You will be provided a “dry bag” to put your duffle bag/personal things in. If you do not have a duffle bag, bring a large trash bag or laundry bag/pillowcase to hold your belongings.
- All suitcases will be left in secure storage while you are on the river. Absolutely no suitcases can be brought on the river. Be sure to have your WTT luggage tag on the items you will place in secure storage.
- There is no electricity on the river so charge your camera battery and leave the charger (and your cell phone) behind in your suitcase, along with any nicer travel clothing.
What are the health recommendations for this tour?
What are the phone and internet recommendations for this tour?
There is no cell phone coverage while on the river. If friends or family need to reach you in case of emergency, they can leave a message with the expedition company; they will do their best to relay the message to our river guides.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
- Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling and provide dates of travel.
- You are unlikely to need cash while on the river.
- The expedition company may have items, such as water bottles and shirts, for sale during the orientation meeting.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
- Additionally, you may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $4-$6 per day.
