Montreal and Quebec #1
Old World Europe in Canada
From the cosmopolitan city of Montreal to the old European charm of Quebec City, this trip to Canada is a wonderful introduction to our neighbors up north. Montreal is the largest French-speaking city after Paris and provides an amazing glimpse into the Old World of French North America. Quebec City has 400+ years of history, and is one of the most charming cities in all of North America. The old portion of the city is reminiscent of a European village complete with a beautiful chateau overlooking the St. Lawrence River. If a flight to Paris is not on your agenda this year we recommend the next best thing...it's a lot closer!

Monday, 22 July 2019: Travel to Montreal; Afternoon City Tour (B,D)
After breakfast at our hotel, we cross the border into Canada and drive 2 hours to Montreal. Montreal is the heartland of French-Canadian society and the unofficial commercial and cultural capital of French Canada. The largest French-speaking city after Paris, Montreal shines with the vitality and excitement of a European capital city. Shortly after arriving, we will be joined by a local guide for a driving tour of the city including Sanctuary Notre Dame, Place Ville-Marie, the Olympic Stadium, Mount Royal and St. Joseph's Oratory. This evening we will enjoy dinner together in Old Montreal. Overnight Montreal - 2 nights
Tuesday, 23 July 2019: Free Day to Explore Montreal (B)
The day is yours to explore Montreal. Your Tour Leader will have suggestions, or you can join her for a more structured day. The city offers many museums and there are plenty of outdoor venues for those interested in strolling about. Beautiful churches dot the city and there are good shopping opportunities in many areas. Don't miss the Botanical Gardens and the biosphere. If food is your thing, the 'Food Tour of Old Montreal' is a favorite as well as high tea in the late afternoon.
Wednesday, 24 July 2019: Montreal to Quebec City along the St. Lawrence River (B,D)
We depart Montreal this morning for Québec City. We will drive along parts of the Chemin du Roy, Canada's oldest highway, linking Montreal and Quebec City since 1737. This route traverses beautiful pastoral landscapes as it winds its way along the St. Lawrence River. We will take our time, stopping in quaint villages before arriving in Quebec City late afternoon. Check in and relax. We'll gather for dinner together this evening. Overnight Quebec City - 3 nights
Thursday, 25 July 2019: Old Quebec Walking Tour; Free Afternoon (B)
Quebec City is one of the loveliest cities in North America and is reminiscent of old Europe. The old walled portion of the city is filled with street performers, artists and unique shops. Our day begins with a guided tour, after which the remainder of the day is yours to explore. Walk along cobble-stoned pedestrian streets, browse the oldest shopping street in North America, visit the Artist's Quarter or stroll along the boardwalk overlooking the St. Lawrence River. Soak up the atmosphere; it’s almost magical.
Friday, 26 July 2019: Montmorency Falls; Copper Art & Museum; Île d'Orléans; Farewell Dinner (B,L,D)
This morning we head out of the city to take in a few interesting stops. We begin at Montmorency Falls, a bit higher than Niagara and the highest falls in the province of Quebec. Staircases allow us to view the falls from several perspectives. A suspension bridge over the crest of the falls offers the most spectacular view. There is also a cable car to transport passengers between the base and the top of the falls (cost not included). From here we visit Albert Gilles Copper Art & Museum for an interesting look (really!) at the role of copper throughout the ages as well as modern interpretations. After working up an appetite, we make our way to the historical borough of Île d'Orléans, which celebrates Québec's rural tradition with its gorgeous scenery stretching along the banks of the St. Lawrence River to enjoy a casual lunch together. We'll return to Quebec City and enjoy a bit of downtime before regrouping for for our Farewell Dinner.
Saturday, 27 July 2019: Return Home from Quebec (B)
Sadly, our time together has come to an end. Based on the departure time you provide WTT, your Tour Leader will organize travelers into small groups so you can ride-share to the airport if you wish. Note: You will clear US Immigration and customs at your destination, not in Quebec.

What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
In general this time of year, Montreal & Quebec city have daily highs in the low 80s with nighttime temperatures in the low 60s.
For This Trip You May Want—
- One smart-casual outfit if you’d like to dress up a bit for dinners
- Lightweight jacket or sweater for cool mornings and evenings
- Inexpensive rain poncho for the occasional scattered showers in the region.
- Sunscreen and insect repellent
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping pills, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind – or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
On every WTT tour, our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicles we use and the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings without assistance.
- It is best to travel as lightly as possible. Most travelers regret when they have packed too much.
- You may bring one suitcase plus small shoulder bag/day pack/purse.
- Maximum suitcase size: 25-inches in height - as measured from the FLOOR to the top of the retracted handle. The small or medium-size in a 3-piece luggage set easily meets this requirement and will be plenty roomy for this length of trip.
- Suitcases larger than 25" in height will not fit in the WTT coach, do not bring them.
- The maximum weight of your suitcase should not exceed 30 pounds as you will need to lift it into the coach luggage compartment.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings. We expect you to take your belongings from the coach to your room and to bring it back to the coach on days we change hotels. We do not provide luggage pulls; they are not safe and are inconvenient. The possibility of steps exist at most hotel entrances.
What are the health recommendations for this tour?
The standards for health and hygiene in Canada are excellent. You should practice the same hygiene rules as here in the US.
What are the phone and internet recommendations for this tour?
Only you can determine your need to stay in contact while traveling. Internet access is available in most hotels, sometimes for a fee.
- Your US cell phone will work in Canada but most cell providers charge roaming fees. Be sure to check with your cell provider before leaving home to see what plans they might offer to reduce the cost of using your phone outside the United States.
- Some providers offer Canada-only plans at reasonable rates.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
Only you can determine the optimum amount of cash to take on tour. When budgeting for out-of-pocket expenses, there are several aspects to consider: the number of meals you are responsible for, the amount of money you like to have on-hand for snacks and drinks, and your individual shopping interests and habits.
- Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling and provide dates of travel. Credit cards are widely accepted in Canada.
- ATMs are typically the best way of obtaining cash; you must know your PIN number for your debit and credit cards in order to use the ATMs.
- Canada's official currency is the Canadian Dollar (CAD)
- Many places accept the US Dollar, however expect your change to be in CAD. It is better to exchange money at an official money exchange where you get a better rate than local merchants typically provide.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
All tips to local guides during your tour have already been paid on your behalf.
- You are responsible for tipping wait-staff, porters, or other individuals who provide a service to you at the hotel, or other public locations.
- Tipping in Canada is similar to tipping customs in the US.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.
What other Additional Information do I need to know?
- Travelers are required to carry a valid passport or passport ID card.
