Tuesday, 09 July 2019: City Tour; Free Time or Optional Visit to Drottningholm Castle (B,D)
After breakfast, we enjoy a morning tour in Sweden’s capital which is situated across 14 islands. A visit to the Vasa Museum takes us back in time to an era when Sweden was the dominant maritime power of Northern Europe. Stroll through the Old Town's cobblestone streets to see medieval buildings, the 13th-century Cathedral and the Royal Palace and the Stock Exchange. This afternoon enjoy free time in Stockholm or select an optional excursion to visit Drottningholm Castle. The castle was built in the 17th century and once upon a time was the royal residence. The castle and the surrounding park is on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. We'll enjoy dinner together this evening.
Wednesday, 10 July 2019: Linkoping - A look at historic Sweden of 100+ years ago (B,D)
Our day begins with breakfast at the hotel and a free morning in Stockholm. We'll have a late morning departure to Linkoping situated near Lake Roxen. Today the town is a commercial, industrial and transportation center but it flourished in the Middle Ages as an intellectual and religious center. We'll visit the open air museum of Linkoping where a guide will take us 100 years back in time to envision life as it was in this small town. Overnight Linkoping, Sweden - 1 night
Thursday, 11 July 2019: Gota Canal; Vadstena Abbey; Toftaholm (B,D)
This morning we will see the famous Göta Canal with its sluices and aqueducts. Constructed in the early 19th century, it formed the backbone of a waterway stretching some 382 miles, linking a number of lakes and rivers to provide a route from Gothenburg on the west coast to the Baltic Sea. We will also visit the museum of the Vadstena Abbey, founded in 1346 by Saint Birgitta, Sweden’s first female saint. We then drive to the town of Toftaholm and have time to relax before dinner together. Overnight Toftaholm, Sweden - 1 night
Friday, 12 July 2019: Copenhagen, Denmark; Tivoli Gardens; Evening at Leisure (B)
We continue driving further south to cross the massive bridge that links Sweden to Denmark. This engineering marvel spans nearly 5 miles to a man-made island where the roadway then dips into a tunnel under the sea. We will arrive Copenhagen around noon. Copenhagen was once the premier capital of northern Europe. This afternoon we will tour the city with a local guide, learning more about Danish history and the Danish monarchy, which is more than 1,000 years old. Of course, no tour of Copenhagen would be complete without a visit to the Little Mermaid. Late this afternoon and evening we will visit Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen’s most popular tourist attraction. Millions of people fill the garden, dine in the 40 restaurants, enjoy the entertainment, play the games, or just sit and people-watch. Tivoli is at its best at night, when over 100,000 colored lanterns light up the garden. Overnight Copenhagen - 1 night
Saturday, 13 July 2019: Kronborg Castle; Overnight Cruise to Oslo, Norway (B,L,D)
This morning we drive north to visit one of northern Europe’s most significant Renaissance castles. Kronborg Castle is a star-shaped fortress situated near the town of Helsingør, immortalized as Elsinore in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The castle was initially erected in the 1420s by the Danish King, Eric of Pomerania, but was rebuilt in 1585 into a magnificent Renaissance castle unique in appearance and size. In 1629, a moment’s carelessness by two workmen caused much of the castle to go up in flame, but 10 years later the castle was restored. We will enjoy lunch at the cultural center next to the castle before returning to Copenhagen for our overnight deluxe ferry to Oslo. On board there are numerous restaurants, entertainment and shopping. The real show however is the passing scenery and fjords. Overnight Ferry - 1 night
Sunday, 14 July 2019: Oslo City Tour; Free Afternoon (B)
Enjoy breakfast on board the ferry before arriving Oslo mid-morning where we'll enjoy a guided sightseeing tour of Norway's capital city. We'll visit Vigeland Park, one of Norway's most popular attractions and the world's largest sculpture park created by a single artist. Then it's up to the hills for a stop at Holmenkollen to better appreciate the daring nature of ski jumpers and appreciate the view of the Oslo Fjord from this vantage point. This afternoon is free to explore Oslo further. You can visit Akershus Fortress, a medieval castle that was built to protect Oslo. The Opera House is located right at the harbor and features an angled, white exterior that appears to rise from the water. It invites its visitors to climb its roof and enjoy panoramic views of Oslo and the fjord. Or simply take in the lively ambiance with a stroll along the main thoroughfare of Karl Johans Gate. Overnight Oslo - 1 night
Monday, 15 July 2019: Hardangervidda and Hardangerfjord (B,D)
We depart Oslo this morning for "fjord country" to the west. Our first destination is Geilo, a popular winter sport village situated half way between Oslo and Bergen. During our ride we pass fantastic fairy-tale scenery, charming valleys, lakes and small villages. From Geilo we continue over the Hardangervidda, the largest mountain plateau in North Europe. We then descend to Eidfjord at sea level and continue along the shores of Hardangerfjord (the second largest fjord in Norway) to our hotel in Lofthus. Sit back and enjoy the scenery today. Overnight Lofthus - 1 night
Tuesday, 16 July 2019: Hardanger Fjord; Walking Tour of Bergen (B,D)
After breakfast we embark on another stunning drive along the Hardanger Fjord. This area is considered the "apple garden of Norway,” famous for springtime apple blossoms. We will see the small apple farms dotting the countryside as we travel a long stretch of the fjord on our way to Bergen. Upon arrival in Bergen we will be joined by a local guide for a walking tour of this compact city to help us get our bearings. Overnight Bergen - 2 nights
Wednesday, 17 July 2019: Free Time; Farewell Dinner (B,D)
Today is yours to enjoy Bergen as you wish. Your Tour Leader will have an itinerary if you'd like to join her, or simply strike out on your own. A wonderful excursion is to Troldhaugen, once the home of the renowned Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Or perhaps you'd like to simply spend the day in nature the way Norwegians do. There are so many marked hiking paths among the seven mountains surrounding Bergen, you're certain to find something that appeals. Tonight we'll gather for our Farewell Dinner to bid Scandinavia a hearty "ha-det!"
Thursday, 18 July 2019: Return Home from Bergen (B)
Sadly, it’s time to return home. Make your return flight from Bergen at your convenience. Your Tour Leader can assist with organizing travelers to ride-share to the airport.

What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
In general this time of year, the average temperature during the day will range from the mid-60s to mid-70s, dropping to the 50s at night.
For this Trip You May Want—
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Rain jacket
- Lightweight but warm jacket or sweater
- One smart-casual outfit if you’d like to dress up a bit for dinners.
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping pills, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
Good Packing Habits—
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
On every WTT tour, our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicles we use, the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings without assistance and the restrictions imposed by other forms of transportation such as ferries.
- It is best to travel as lightly as possible. Most travelers regret when they have packed too much.
- We strongly recommend you bring only one suitcase no larger than 26 inches high as measured from the FLOOR to the top of the retracted handle, plus 1 carry-on. The small or medium-size in a 3-piece luggage set easily meets this requirement and will be plenty roomy for this length of trip.
- Your purse should be able to be worn across your body, hands-free.
- If you are planning on shopping, have larger items shipped directly to your home. For smaller items you want to carry home, bring a small nylon zippered bag packed in your suitcase to accommodate these purchases.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings. We expect you to take your belongings from the coach to your room and to bring it back to the coach on days we change hotels. We do not provide luggage pulls; they are not safe and are inconvenient. Ensure you can manage all of your belongings by practicing before leaving home. If you cannot carry your belongings comfortably, then eliminate items until you can readily manage your things.
- Steps exist at most hotel entrances. On occasion the coach must unload passengers and luggage some distance from the hotel entrance.
What are the health recommendations for this tour?
The standards for health and hygiene in Scandinavia are excellent. You should practice the same hygiene rules as here in the US.
What are the phone and internet recommendations for this tour?
Only you can determine your need to stay in contact while traveling. Internet access is available in most hotels, sometimes for a fee.
- If you are bringing a cell phone, contact your cell phone service provider before departing about adding international calling and/or texting features. Texting internationally is often less expensive than placing a cell phone call.
- Learn how to make an international call BEFORE you leave. Consult your cell provider and check out the web site www.HowtoCallAbroad.com.
What are the electricity requirements for this tour?
You may need to purchase an adapter. To determine the electric plug configuration needed for your destination, refer to http://www.iec.ch/worldplugs/list_bylocation.html. A universal adaptor supports a wide variety of sockets/plugs. You should also check your electronic devices for voltage compatibility. Many countries operate on 220V or 230V, which differs from most of North America. Most of today's electronics (laptops, phone chargers etc.) are multi-voltage and will work worldwide automatically, without a transformer. Consult your owner's manual for further details.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
Only you can determine the optimum amount of cash to take on tour. When budgeting for out-of-pocket expenses, there are several aspects to consider: the number of meals you are responsible for, the amount of money you like to have on-hand for snacks and drinks, and your individual shopping interests and habits. Scandanavian countries tend to be more expensive than other European countries.
- Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling and provide dates of travel.
- ATMs are typically the best way of obtaining cash; they are found in most towns and cities, as well as airport locations. You must know your PIN number for your debit and credit cards in order to use the ATMs.
- The official currency of Sweden is the Swedish Krone (Crown). Denmark's official currency is the Danish Krone. The official currency in Norway is the Norwegian Krone. These currencies are not interchangable.
- You may want to exchange $100 or so into local local currency so you have cash upon arrival.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
All tips to local guides during your tour have already been paid on your behalf.
- You are responsible for tipping wait-staff, porters, or other individuals who provide a service to you at the hotel, or other public locations.
- A service charge is included on bills throughout Scandinavia. If you feel service has been above and beyond you can leave a small tip.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.
What other Additional Information do I need to know?
- Travelers are required to have a valid passport. Most countries require your passport to be valid a minimum of six months after your return home date, and have at least two consecutive blank pages.
