Itinerary
Friday, 16 August 2019: Arrive Portland, Maine; Welcome Dinner (D)
Schedule your arrival into Portland, Maine no later than 4:00pm and take local transportation to the hotel. The tour begins at 6:00pm in the lobby of the hotel. Our Welcome Meeting will be followed by dinner to get acquainted and discuss our upcoming adventure. Overnight Portland - 1 night
Saturday, 17 August 2019: Scenic Drive to Bar Harbor; Camden Stop (B)
Traveling along the coast of Maine is one of the most interesting and scenic road trips in America. Our day begins with a drive along Route 1 to Camden, an upscale seaside community with breathtaking estates and mansions dotting the hills and oceanside. Its town motto is "where the mountains meet the sea" and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful places in all of New England. After a lunch stop, we will continue on to Bar Harbor and check into our hotel. Overnight Bar Harbor - 4 nights
Sunday, 18 August 2019: Lobster Boat Cruise, Free Time; Group Dinner (B,D)
We begin our day with a unique experience, a ride aboard a functioning lobster boat around the picturesque harbor. Enjoy the breeze and the smell of the sea while learning all about lobster harvesting! Afterward, the remainder of the afternoon is free to explore Bar Harbor. The rock-bound coast and soaring granite cliffs add to the magic of this community. We will regroup for dinner together this evening.
Monday, 19 August 2019: Acadia National Park (B,L)
We spend today exploring the beauty and diversity of Acadia National Park, the eastern US' first national park. Acadia has 130 miles of hiking trails so there is a path for everyone. Our first stop is the Visitors Center to get our bearings, then we'll drive the Park Loop, stopping at various points of interest along the way. We'll stop for lunch at historic Jordan Pond House. Be sure to try the popovers, a summertime tradition dating back more than a century. Then this afternoon, you may want to take a leisurely stroll along the paved Cadillac Summit Loop Trail that offers wonderful views of the surrounding areas and spot the "bar" that gave the town its name. After a full day, the evening is free to wander about Bar Harbor and find the perfect restaurant at which to dine.
Tuesday, 20 August 2019: Ferry to Great Cranberry Island (B)
We will board a local ferry to Great Cranberry Island, the largest of the Cranberry Isles. In transit from the mainland, enjoy the magnificent view of the mountains of Acadia National Park and its rugged coastline. Once on the island, you get can see a lot on foot. Visit the Historical Society's Museum with displays about shipbuildng and early settlers. The Whistler Cove Trail is a lovely side trip, leading a quarter-mile through the damp maritime forest to a pretty cove with a sandy beach at low tide. Be sure to stop by the General Store for a quick bite and browse around before returning to Bar Harbor.
Wednesday, 21 August 2019: Rockland, ME; Farewell Dinner (B,D)
We stop in Rockland on our return to Portland today. Rockland is a classic Maine coastal town and the lobster capital of the world! Downtown has great architecture in its historic homes and shops. It is also home to The Farnsworth Art Museum and Wyeth Center where an impressive collection of Maine art is highlighted. You might want to walk the Rockland Breakwater to the Lighthouse at the end. It is slightly less than one mile out into the bay. We will get together this evening for our Farewell Dinner.
Thursday, 22 August 2019: Return Home from Portland, ME (B)
Sadly, our time together has come to an end. Depart at your convenience. Your Tour Leader will assist with ride-share coordination based on flight departure times.

What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
In general this time of year, the average temperature during the day is in the high 70s with lows in the mid-50s. Plan to dress in layers.
For This Trip, You Will Need—
- Warm layers, such as fleece and windbreaker, for cool mornings and time spent on or near water.
You May Also Want —
- Inexpensive rain poncho, just in case!
- Swimsuit, suntan lotion, sun glasses, and a hat
- Refillable water bottle
- Smart-casual wear if you'd like to dress up a bit for dinners
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping pills, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
Good Packing Habits—
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
On every WTT tour, our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicles we use and the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings without assistance.
- It is best to travel as lightly as possible. Most travelers regret when they have packed too much.
- You may bring one suitcase plus small shoulder bag/day pack/purse.
- Maximum suitcase size: 25-inches in height as measured from the FLOOR to the top of the retracted handle. The small case in a 3-piece luggage set easily meets this requirement and should be plenty roomy for this length of trip.
- Suitcases larger than 25" in height will not fit in the WTT coach; don't bring them.
- The maximum weight of your suitcase should not exceed 30 pounds, as you will need to lift it into the coach luggage compartment.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings. We expect you to take your belongings from the coach to your room and to bring it back to the coach and load it on days we change hotels. We do not provide luggage pulls; they are not safe and are inconvenient. The possibility of steps exist at most hotel entrances.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
- Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling and provide dates of travel.
- Automatic teller machines (ATMs) are typically the best way of obtaining cash; they are found in most towns and cities; you must know your PIN number for your debit and credit cards in order to use the ATMs.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
All tips to local guides during your tour have already been paid on your behalf.
- You are responsible for tipping wait-staff, porters, or other individuals who provide a service to you at the hotel, or other public locations.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.
What other Additional Information do I need to know?
