Galapagos Islands by Private Boat
Including Quito & the Andean Markets
We have leased a private boat for our trip to the Galapagos Islands this year, with a capacity for 15 travelers. A boat is necessary in order to conveniently visit the islands that make up the Galapagos. Each island has its own ecosystem, its own scenery, and its own species. We begin the tour in Quito, capital of Ecuador, to sight-see and explore and then spend five days up close and personal with the wildlife, flora and fauna of the Galapagos archipelago in the company of an expert naturalist guide. When the day is done, we'll retire to our floating home to reflect upon our shared experiences. Demand for touring the Galapagos is increasing while the number of ships allowed to visit is tightly controlled, putting pressure on both available space and price. If the Galapagos Islands is on your list we encourage you to do it now.

Itinerary
Sunday, 14 July 2019: Evening Arrival Quito, Ecuador
Arrive in Quito, Ecuador. Most flights arrive in the evening. Transfer to the hotel is included and is based on arrival time. Because it will be too late to hold a group meeting this evening, we will hold our Welcome Meeting in the morning over breakfast. Overnight Quito - 3 nights
Monday, 15 July 2019: City Tour of Quito; Middle of the World; Group Lunch (B,L)
Enjoy breakfast at leisure and then meet in the lobby of the hotel at 9:00am for our group meeting. After introductions we'll depart for a tour through the streets and squares of the historic center of Quito, the first city in the world to be declared by UNESCO as "World Cultural Heritage" in recognition of it architectural and artistic value. Narrow and sometimes steep streets are surrounded by a great exhibition of classic architecture. Colonial style houses, gracious flowered balconies, charming squares and more than 50 monumental churches, convents, monasteries, cloisters and historic monuments create the best preserved historical center in Latin America. Though the equator runs through many cities around the world, Quito has become famous for it. We will stop at the Equatorial Monument which marks the "Middle of the World" and proceed to the true equator at latitude 0º 0º 0º, where one can stand with a foot in each hemisphere. The Museo Inti Nan, built on the true equator, has a signpost that indicates when you are standing in the center of the earth. This is an interactive museum, with experiments and events that inform and make the equator such a popular attraction in Ecuador.
Tuesday, 16 July 2019: Day Trip to Otavalo Market (B)
Nestled in the Andean highlands and surrounded by volcanoes, Otavalo is the site of the largest market in South America. Here Ecuador's numerous indigenous groups come to barter for both crafts and staples. On the way, we visit the village of Cayambe to taste typical "biscochos" (biscuits). After visiting the market, we'll stop in Cotacachi, known for its hand-crafted leather products and Peguche, known for its weaving. We return to Quito late this afternoon.
Wednesday, 17 July 2019: Fly to Galapagos Islands; Board Ship (B,L,D)
We transfer early to the airport for our flight to Galápagos’ central islands, which are perhaps the best spot to witness the full scope of the archipelago’s incredible natural diversity, both on land and underwater. While situated close together, each of these small islands has developed in isolation, spawning an amazing collection of plants and animals. Upon arrival on Santa Cruz Island, we'll meet our naturalist guide and transfer to our boat, which is moored in Puerto Ayora. We'll visit a tortoise ranch in the Santa Cruz highlands to get up close and personal with these 100-year-old gentle giants. Overnight aboard Xavier III - 4 nights
Thursday, 18 July 2019: Chinese Hat & Black Turtle Cove (B,L,D)
We'll stop today for snorkeling at Chinese Hat, a tiny islet less than a quarter of 1 sq km in size. It is a fairly recent volcanic cone, which accounts for its descriptive name. Then it's off to Black Turtle Cove, situated in the northern part of Santa Cruz. This inlet is surrounded by mangroves and is only accessible by dinghy. The shallow cove is a safe haven for young marine life. Black-tip and white-tip reef sharks, sea turtles, and a variety of rays are often spotted here. Please note that itinerary stops are subject to change based on current conditions.
Friday, 19 July 2019: Cerro Dragon; Islas Daphne (B,L,D)
Today we visit Cerro Dragon (Dragon Hill) on the west coast of Santa Cruz Island to see the Galapagos land iguana. These miniature dragons roam around the sun-scorched, boulder-strewn island, nipping away contentedly at the fruits and flowers of their favorite food, the Opuntia Cacti. We'll also visit a salt water lagoon where if we’re lucky (and quiet) we might glimpse the elusive flamingo. The flamingos feed on microscopic organisms that need very specific water conditions to survive and as such, there are only a handful of suitable lagoons in the archipelago. We'll continue on to Daphne Island where we have more opportunities to spot birds, including the Galapagos finch and the well-known blue-footed booby.
Saturday, 20 July 2019: Islas Plaza & Isla Santa Fe (B,L,D)
This morning we moor at South Plaza Island, half of a pair of islets off Santa Cruz that is home to the largest colony of sea lions in the archipelago. The channel between the two islets provides the perfect haven for pups. The turquoise waters of the channel contrast brilliantly with the black lava of the shoreline and colorful land iguanas inhabit most of this island. We'll also visit Santa Fe Island, known for its plentiful marine iguanas, the only sea-going lizard in the world. There will be wonderful opportunities to swim and snorkel with the sea lions.
Sunday, 21 July 2019: Puerto Baquerizo Moreno; Fly to Quito; Farewell Dinner (B,D)
Today, we cruise into San Cristóbal’s clear waters. The land and sky are equally amazing, playing host to colonies of boobies and frigatebirds. We disembark at Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the capital of the province of Galapagos. We'll visit the Interpretation Centre to learn more about the natural history of this archipelago, from its volcanic origins to its remoteness and the arrival of various species. We'll then fly back to Quito and will enjoy our very casual Farewell Dinner and reminisce about the wonderful experiences we shared. Overnight Quito - 1 night
Monday, 22 July 2019: Return Home from Quito (B)
Sadly, our time together has come to an end. Schedule your return flight to depart at your convenience. The WTT tour leader will assist in organizing ride-sharing to the airport based on your flight departure time.

What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
In general this time of year, daytime temperatures in the Galapagos Islands are in the low 70s, dropping to the 50s at night. Snorkeling equipment is available on-board the excursion boat. Wet suits are available to rent for $5 per day.
For This Trip You'll Need—
- Swimsuit
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, hat & insect repellent
- Lightweight but warm fleece or jacket for cool mornings and evenings.
- At least one pair of shorts and one pair long pants/hiking pants (denim is not ideal)
- Sturdy walking or hiking shoes with good tread
- Sport sandals that can get wet and still provide traction
- Reusable water bottle
You May Also Want—
- If you are prone to motion or sea sickness, bring anti-motion medication.
- Binoculars
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping pills, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
Good Packing Habits—
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layers and coordinates. Your fellow travelers will not mind – or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and pack travel-sized toiletries (preferably biodegradable).
- Pack medication in your carry-on.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
On every WTT tour, our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicles we use, the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings without assistance and the restrictions imposed by other forms of transportation such as boats and small planes.
- We strongly recommend you travel using a soft-sided duffel bag. It makes tucking your luggage away on the boat easier and frees up space in your cabin.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings. You must be able to navigate airports and get on and off the excursion ship, with your belongings and without assistance. You will not have time to search for a porter.
- We recommend you carry a day pack while touring in both Quito and the Galapagos. It makes carrying a camera, water, extra sunscreen, etc. easier than using a purse.
- Steps exist at most hotel entrances. On occasion the coach must unload passengers and luggage some distance from the hotel entrance.
- The Galapagos are a protected National Park. Your luggage will be subject to inspection upon arrival and departure.
What are the health recommendations for this tour?
The standards for health and hygiene in Ecuador are good. You should practice the same hygiene rules as here in the US.
- While there are no specific vaccine requirements for Ecuador, you should be up-to-date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides additional guidance at www.cdc.gov. Please discuss any vaccine or health concerns with your healthcare provider.
- You may want to use bottled water to brush your teeth, while in Ecuador.
- In Quito, some people have experienced altitude sickness. If you experience this be sure to drink lots of water, rest and take aspirin.
What are the phone and internet recommendations for this tour?
Only you can determine your need to stay in contact while traveling. Internet access is available in most hotels, sometimes for a fee.
- If you are bringing a cell phone, contact your cell phone service provider before departing about adding international calling and/or texting features. Texting internationally is often less expensive than placing a cell phone call.
- Learn how to make an international call BEFORE you leave. Consult your cell provider and check out the web site www.HowtoCallAbroad.com.
What are the electricity requirements for this tour?
Outlets in the hotel and aboard ship are North American-style plugs. No adapters or converters are necessary.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
Only you can determine the optimum amount of cash to take on tour. When budgeting for out-of-pocket expenses, there are several aspects to consider: the number of meals you are responsible for, the amount of money you like to have on-hand for snacks and drinks, any tipping you'd like to do, and your individual shopping interests and habits.
- Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling and provide dates of travel.
- Ecuador’s official currency is the US Dollar. Ecuadorean coins are still in circulation and are equivalent to the denominations as US coins.
- Ecuador is a cash-based society, and this is particularly true in the Galapagos Islands.
- Be sure to have small bills on hand in Quito for public transportation, small purchases, and tipping. It is not uncommon for businesses to have trouble giving change for a $20 bill.
- While on board the boat in the Galapagos Islands, cash must be used for additional purchases. Meals are included, as are coffee, tea and water. However, if you'd like to purchase an alcoholic beverage or any other beverage, you will need to pay cash.
Transit Control Cards and Galapagos Islands Park Fee
- When at the airport departing Quito for the Galapagos Islands, you will be required to pay a $20 Transit Control Card fee. This is not included in the price of the tour and must be paid in cash. Keep this transit card with your passport during your stay in the Galapagos.
- When arriving in the Galapagos Islands, all travelers must pay a $100 Galapagos Park fee, which funds the maintenance of the park as well as conservation. WTT has included this fee in the price of the tour and your Tour Leader will pay this fee on your behalf.
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
- If you’d like to tip your naturalist guide, that must be done separately.
- You are responsible for tipping wait-staff, porters, or other individuals who provide a service to you at the hotel, or other public locations.
- Porters in hotels and airports expect $1 for 2 luggage pieces. A 5-10% tip is sufficient in most restaurants unless the service has been exceptional. There is no need to tip taxi drivers as it’s recommended to negotiate fares before departure.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.

- Travelers are required to have a valid passport
