Land of the Polar Bears

We've all wanted to experience that one wildlife-viewing trip of a lifetime. We think this one definitely qualifies and quite possibly may be the one for you.  In October and November along the shores of Hudson Bay, one of the world's largest populations of polar bears congregate waiting for the bay to freeze. Once the ice forms, the bears can hunt for the Arctic seal and prepare for the long winter ahead.  This migration has made Churchill famous as the "Polar Bear Capital of the World."  Polar bears have been federally designated as endangered species due to the melting Arctic ice pack that threatens their habitat. The best way to view these magnificent animals without invading their environment is on one of the tundra-vehicles. They look like lunar rovers and carry you high above the ground so you can safely watch and photograph the bears.  Please join us on what will definitely be a wonderful and rewarding experience.

Tentative Itinerary

Day 1: Winnipeg, Manitoba; Welcome Dinner

Arrive in Winnipeg at your convenience. We will gather for dinner and discuss the adventure we are about to experience.

Day 2: Winnipeg / Churchill

We will fly to Churchill this morning - approximately 2 1/2 hour flight. This outpost town, originally a fur-trading post, is our base for adventure.  Bears aren't the whole story in Churchill. The area also is a nesting ground for hundreds of birds, including a variety of hawks and falcons, the harlequin duck and the rare Ross' gull.  The Eskimo Museum contains Inuit carvings and artifacts.

Days 3 & 4: Polar Bear Viewing

Unique tundra vehicles will be our transportation to the best places to view bears.  At this time of year, bears gather waiting for the ice to freeze on Hudson Bay so they may begin the winter seal-hunting season. We will spend hours watching them interact all without invading their environment. From the warmth of our vehicle, we may see mothers with cubs and young adult males play-fighting.  Occasionally an adult becomes curious and will approach the vehicle.  We will also watch out for Arctic fox, snowy owl, and other northern wildlife.

Day 5: Evening on the Tundra

We will tour historic Churchill, then head out to the tundra for evening bear viewing. During our daytime exploration, we may visit local sled dogs en route to Cape Merry, where we often see Arctic fox and Arctic hare. If the skies are clear, our nighttime tundra excursion might provide one of nature’s most exhilarating experiences – a chance to view the Northern Lights away from the glare of town. Though they are never predictable, sometimes amidst the darkness tundra, the lights begin as a white glow in the northern sky, then begin to flicker and shimmer in color.

Day 6: Churchill / Winnipeg

Our return flights are scheduled to depart in the mid - late afternoon to offer as much time as possible to explore Churchill.

Day 7: Return Home
