 and sights around Los Angeles

Dec. 28, 2008 - Jan. 2, 2009

On Thursday, January 1, 2009 millions of spectators from around the world will celebrate the New Year with the 120th Rose Parade themed Hats Off To Entertainment.  The Rose Parade will once again feature the beautiful pageantry and tradition of magnificent floral floats, high-stepping equestrians and spirited marching bands.  What makes this parade so special is that we will have the opportunity to participate in float preparations and watch the parade on New Year's Day. If you've ever wondered how this parade becomes reality, this is a trip you won't want to miss. We expect this one to sell out fast. Get your reservation in now!

With motorization and computerized controls, today’s Tournament of Roses’ floats are on an order of magnitude the early organizers could hardly imagine. Pictured above is a float from the 1901 parade.

Monday, December 29 - Full day - Participate in Float Preparation

What a wonderful opportunity to assist in the final stages of preparing the floats for the Tournament of Roses Parade.  We will be at the float staging area for most of today and have the chance to participate in a variety of float preparation activities. The "float captains" who are in charge of building and decorating the floats will give us our assignments. You could be gluing flowers onto the float, or coloring corn husks....who knows.  At the end of this day, we will know we have been a part of something very special.  We'll return to the hotel late afternoon and relax. (B, L)

Tuesday, December 30 - Hollywood and Beverly Hills Tour, Crystal Cathedral

We will begin our day with a tour including the famous sights in Hollywood plus a stop at Rodeo Drive.  Rodeo Drive at its best during Christmas when lights and flowers decorate the streets and the stores outdo themselves with Christmas decor.  This evening we will attend the Glory of Christmas at the Crystal Cathedral. (B)

Wednesday, December 31 - J. Paul Getty Museum, Dinner

Today we will visit the Getty Museum to view its collection of Western art from the Middle Ages to the present against a backdrop of dramatic architecture, tranquil gardens, and breathtaking views.  We will see European paintings, drawings, manuscripts, sculpture and decorative arts, and European and American photographs. Time permitting we will go to Long Beach and have some free time in that area. We'll have dinner together tonight and toast the incoming New Year. (B, D)

Thursday, January 1 - Tournament of Roses Parade

We will get an early start today to watch the beautiful flower-filled floats and see the nation's finest marching bands perform right before our eyes as we experience one of the nation's most beloved annual events.  After the parade, we will see how much of the day is left and see if we have time to explore a bit more before returning back to the hotel. (B, D)

Friday, January 2 - Return home

Make your return flight at your convenience from Los Angeles International Airport. (B)
